Jacks defeat Mavericks in home opener
BROOKINGS — Chelsea Goosen scored two goals and Kelsey Worcester added an insurance goal late in the contest to give the South Dakota State University women’s soccer team a 4-1 victory over Minnesota State, Mankato Friday night.
Goosen, a freshman from Olathe, Kan., put the Jackrabbits on the board in the 22nd minute with her first career goal. MSMU’s Carly Peterson tied the ballgame at one, three minutes later off an assist from Jacy Brannen. Kellyn Farrell, a freshman from Littleton, Colo., closed out the first half with her first career goal in the 34th minute.
SDSU upped the lead to 3-1 in the beginning of the second half as Goosen connected for her second goal of the contest. Sophomore Kelsey Worcester closed out the scoring for the Jackrabbits scoring off an assist from Janel Brown. . . .
The Jackrabbits will take on Creighton University in a 1 p.m. match at Fishback Soccer Park on Sunday. The contest will mark the first Division I soccer match to be played at Fishback Soccer Park.
Sunday’s game against the Bluejays will also be Sioux Falls Soccer Day. Members of the Dakota Gold and Great Plains soccer clubs will be able to watch the first-ever Division I soccer game played at Fishback Soccer Park free if they are sporting their team jersey upon entering the 1 p.m. contest.
It is good for a young ball club to get that first win under their belts.
