You ought to read up on title 9, (by the way the legislature just approved over 3 million for the equestrian center). The whole reason for keeping womens tennis, golf and swimming is because they give opportunities for women at a fairly cheap price. Your arguments about nobody caring are EXACTLY why USD got sued for discrimination under Title IX. That "nobody cares" attitude cost them 2 million dollars in damages and legal fees.

Your right most football/basketball fans could care less about so called non revenue sports, but those sports are where women get the opportunity to compete WHICH IS REQUIRED BY FEDERAL LAW! The bottomline, is if any sports get cut its going to be wrestling.

I was always under the impression that if a sport got cut it would be baseball. Especially if we joined the Big Sky since the don't sponser it. Even though I love baseball, if a sport were to be cut, I would prefer it over wrestling. I pretty sure it costs more. I would also think it produces less revenue and we are less likely to make a splash nationally.

For those who are thinking about cutting ANY womens sports you need to read the following from the NCAA link on Title IX:

Q. How does an institution comply with Title IX?

An institution must meet all of the following requirements in order to be in compliance with Title IX:

For participation requirements, institutions officials must meet one of the following three tests. An institution may:

Provide participation opportunities for women and men that are substantially proportionate to their respective rates of enrollment of full-time undergraduate students;

Demonstrate a history and continuing practice of program expansion for the underrepresented sex;

Fully and effectively accommodate the interests and abilities of the underrepresented sex; and,

Female and male student-athletes must receive athletics scholarship dollars proportional to their participation; and,

Equal treatment of female and male student-athletes in the eleven provisions as mentioned above.

Considering just scholarships which must be proportional, Basketball balances out. Softball balances out baseball, track, cross country balances. Swimming balances. Wrestling maybe balanced by soccer BUT football with 50 full rides is the big cash cow that needs to be balanced off. Equestrian will help but doesnt get the program there alone. The opportunities for women in golf and tennis are needed to help balance football. Thats why the UND,USD,Minn.Duluth, Winona, Southwest, Concordia, UNO, and others have womens tennis and no mens teams.

My understanding of Title IX is that there just has to be equal opportunity. So if Men's and Women's sports (be it Tennis, Golf, etc) were unfortunately cut, like I said before, we would still be compliant because the opportunities would still be equal in the other sports. Either way I hope none are cut, especially as we look for a conference. It would be bad to axe tennis and then get into a conference that offers tennis and be in lose/lose situation.

Like somebody had said though, if we aren't putting enough resources into some of these sports is it worth having them. I understand the logic of still giving somebody the chance to play and represent SDSU, but we seem to get beat pretty badly by schools we shouldn't be getting beat by. It's definately is a tough situation and i don't envy the administrators making the decisions.

But the same opportunities exist for men in Tennis and Golf at SDSU...you have lost me with your logic there and it could be just me, it has been a long damn day.

And Im not making my point very clearly which is. If any sports are going to get cut its the mens sports such as wrestling, or mens tennis and golf. I hope we dont lose ANY sports, again because that was what the administration told the legislature.

Assuming we are equal with men's and women's opportunities right now, or will be in the next few years as we add schollies to football and equestrian. If we do cut men's sports and not women's than that may throw us out of whack on that side. I do believe title IX is applied to both men and women.

Tennis and Golf are two sports that wouldn't take any investment whatsoever to add back if a conference offers these sports. Right now there might be 1 scholarship for women's Tennis and none for golf. The tennis coach is a grad asst and the golf coach is part time and works somewhere else at the college I believe. The problem is that these two sports alone, I would bet, eat up at least $60-80k of budget for what? 24 total student-athletes between 4 sports. I know in general that this isn't a huge portion of our athletic budget but that would be 2 assistant coaches for basketball.

All I am saying is why nickel and dime our flagship sports (Football, M&W Basketball and even volleyball). These are the sports that will get us into a conference and these are the sports that other conferences are judging us by

What's the boards opinion on adding some new sports.
Men's and women's hockey could be a sport that would be able to achieve some good success, and they would have opponets that are a bus ride away(UND, SCSU).
I was just wondering if there is a possibility that we will add a sport like hockey or men's soccer?

I think mens hockey could be a revenue sport for SDSU, I'd like to see it, I have been saying that for years. But not sure what the womens flip side would be. I agree it most likely will not happen in the near future

Some observations and thoughts:

1. SDSU has always strived to take the high road when dealing with Title IX. This is done by adding sports, scholarships, coaches, and facilities. We let USD take the lead at cutting programs.

2. Hockey is a very expensive sport. Women's hockey is a money pit. I doubt the ticket base exists in the Brookings and Sioux Falls areas to support a NCAA hockey program at SDSU when it would have to compete with SDSU basketball and the Sioux Falls Stampede.

3. Cutting any sports would create a negative "vibe" within the athletic department and the entire university, even if it was "just" tennis or swimming. For instance, Coach Liles would have a much harder time recruiting if SDSU started dropping programs because the recruits would be afraid of a wrestling program shutdown.

4. You never know where the next big donation may come from. It could be from a tennis or swim team alum...........

The men's hockey club does get a lot of money...on an average weekend it makes about 500-1000 dollars after paying about 1000 for ice. I've seen more fans at the hockey games when there are basketball games than at the basketball games...Hockey games tomorrow and Saturday our league tournament 4 dollars for non-students be there.

Diversity has long been a Hallmark of a quality university. Diversity includes differing social backgrounds of both faculty and students. It includes diversity of majors and degrees offered. It includes a wide range of activities offered, both athletic and non-athletic. If you want to see a good example of a university offering tremendous diversity in programs with students and faculty from a multitude of backgrounds poke around the Harvard website for a few minutes.

We are headed in the right direction by adding more doctoral programs. The tuition and fee structure is being revised to be more friendly to students from neighboring states. We should discontinue programs only as a last resort. We should always keep the option open to add more if the time and situation is right.

i just got from the most awesome hockey game ever sdsu are conference champs in men's hockey 7-6 ot win over iowa state jv. team. 2nd time i believe in the last 3 years...we got's ourselves a hockey dynasty sorta...
