  • SDSU Support

Although 89 won't like the title of their thread, there is an interesting discussion going on over on the bison board about our athletics program and support. May be an interesting read...

    Re: SDSU Support

I don't have easy access to numbers but recall that our average home attendance was somewhere in the middle of the pack for DIAA schools. We previously lead the nation in DII attendance for basketball.

I don't think chirping from a bunch of Bison dimwits should lead to too much concern. SDSU is doing what it can to promote its athletic programs throughout South Dakota and we should see an upswing in attendance.

My concern, the weak FB schedule at home this coming fall could really hurt.

As for them being WAY ahead of us, I don't think thats a fact. Things have gone better for their men's bb program and they are stronger in wrestling and football. Thats about all I'll give them right now.

      Re: SDSU Support

Keep in mind the Sioux Falls media is still largely stuck in a "NCC is the big time, and GPAC gets near equal time" mindset so it's a more difficult sell for SDSU than it is for NDSU in a Fargo media market that seems to pretty much have signed on to the D-I move.

I've listened to Craig and Mike on KWSN the past couple of days and have been struck by the utter small-time-ness of their talk topics. I'm not saying that coverage of high school and small college athletics should be avoided in a local radio sports talk show, but the lack of interest in SDSU's athletic programs on that show is simply stunning. Now it could be that there is simply nothing to talk about re: SDSU (which goes back to needing to beef up SDSU's promotions and media operations).

Also, the Jackrabbit Report on KWSN is lame, lame, lame, lame (at least from my limited sample of listening in this week). I can't see how anyone but a hardcore Jacks fan would want to listen. Sorry, but that's how I see it.

More than anything else, SDSU needs to have success on the field and on the court in football and men's basketball.

Ordinarily I'd be 100% on board with red-shirting Anthony Cordova, but SDSU really needs to be doing much, much more to win over the Sioux Falls media, IMHO.

        Re: SDSU Support

PS to my last post . . .

Frost Arena did get some positive press on the C&M talk show--they had Dellas Cole on talking about the Brookings Bobcats girls basketball team and were talking about the state tournament to be held in Frost. Dellas said that people would be impressed with the "fan-friendly" improvements to Frost.

So, lest people think that the Craig & Mike show is unremittingly negative towards SDSU. They're just mostly negative.

Once again, winning some big games would go a long way towards fixing that problem.

This may be a little off topic, but I think having the Girls basketball tourney at Frost will be a good thing. If a Freshman, Sophmore on a team that develops into a prospect ends up playing in Frost, it can be an advantage in recuiting them later. It gives them an opprotunity to visit the campus and play on the only D-1 court in the state. The video boards are also a good selling point. SDSU can also scout the teams without having to travel to the tourneys.

Craig & Mike are having Steve Imming on in the 4 pm hour of their show today.

My opinion of their show (as a representative of the Sioux Falls sports media) continues to develop as I gather more information . . .

I find it interesting they talk about one our football games. Well lets look at one of there basketball games. They drew 839 vs. Hamline there first regular season game of the year. One of there FOUR games vs. teams that aren’t DI. Where were the fans? Neither the mens team or the lady jacks drew under 1000 for a regular season game.

                Re: SDSU Support

Simply stated, Craig and Mike are the sports show in the largest city in South Dakota.  Their knowledge about sports is limited to SD high school and SD small college sports, plain and simple.  They don't know anything else and can't be expected to understand anything else.  To expect anymore than what we currently get from them is unrealistic.  They can't deliver and shouldn't be expected to.

Point, we need someone else to come to the forefront and be a pioneer.  Remind you of something?  Its called a paradigm shift and its alway met with brisk opposition from those who are the least knowledgable and therefore the most fearful.  Don't be disappointed in Craig and Mike they do their best at what they are comfortable with just like most underachievers.  The world of DI is much too intimidating for the likes of C & M and they want you (the listener) to feel the same way.

                    Re: SDSU Support

I would not pay much attention to some of those posts over on Bisonville. For those who have commented that SDSU can not support a D1 program based on the population of Brookings compared to Fargo dont have a clue as to what is all going on. I think we have made some good friends among the NDSU fans and our athletic departments have learned a great deal working together as partners. If you compared both the Men's and women's BB schedule you find common opponents visiting each campus about the same time. So having two D1 opponents within 200 miles helps both institutions and helps other D1 schools fill their schedules.

I have spent a great deal of time in Fargo recently and thats a private matter, which I will not discuss on this board, but the point is I have had a chance to meet a great number of people here and there in Fargo. Many hardly know that they have a land grant campus within their city limits. So the differential in population is not a good critieria to judge the progress of both programs in the D1 period. Also some do know and care a great deal about NDSU. When you mall walk as I do at West Acres in Fargo, I do see a lot of NDSU gear worn by other walkers. I have worn my SDSU gear and it helps to strike up a conversation. I do not get up in the face of some senior who happens to be wearing an NDSU gear and tell him the "Bison Suck". Some of you may disagree, but I think I have gotten past that stage in life.

As far as 89rabbit and his posts over on Bisonville, they have been very civil and for that one nut to accuse him of kissing up was way out of line.

One final observation about D1 support at SDSU. Yesterday, I check to see the membership of Bisonville and noted it has 1064 members. This board which was started with the help of the Bisonville Moderator, Tony now has 568 members. I remember a time when there was less than 100 members, so to say the D1 movement in SDSU is failing is just plain wrong.

I know I have my concerns about the men's bb program and maybe have said things that were less than helpful, I do support the president, AD, and Coach Nagy. I glad President Miller when public about the two accommodation letters that she wrote Coach Nagy and Coach Stiglemeier. It has calmed me done a great deal.

                    GO JACKS ;D

I know this may be a bit off of the topic, but it does fall under SDSU Support. Just made my first online donation I have to say it went pretty smoothly. Here's a challenge that all message board participants do the same! Hope to see you all at the women's game on Friday night. Go Jacks!

I upped my donation amount this year (after getting approval from Snookums and agreeing to give the same amount to Tennessee).

Doubled my donation this year and did it via the online method. Very easy and received a nice thank you package.

Everyone who hasn't needs to join the Jackrabbit club, its easy and flexible with many great benefits. Its the best way to support scholarship athletes at SDSU without establishing an endowment or similar.

Well the reason we left DII was to get away from playing teams like Hamline, Bison fans have never cared about playing DIII, DAC 10, or NSIC teams and they never will. Northern Colorado is IAA team and even though they stunk last year SDSU should do better then 1881. Schools like UNC will always been on SDSU's football schedule and the Hamline's on NDSU's schedule will be going away soon forever. Next year NDSU is only going to play 2 non-DI teams and hopefully the number will be down to 1 or none after the transitions is over.
