    Re: Countdown to a Conference

I know we need a conference and have to take whoever invites us, BUT Oral Roberts, IUPUI, IUFW, Oakland, Centenary, just doesn't do it for me. To me they don't even seem like division I schools and are just the same as USD, UND, St. Cloud, Minn St. Obviously the difference is they are DI whereas the old NCC schools are not, but to me the Mid-Con schools are hard to get excited about.

Then get excited about a chance to go to the "Big Dance", the Mid-Con Tourney Champ gets an auto bid!  8-)

Would you rather be an independent, with no chance at the "Dance"?

Don't want to be an independant, but I personally would rather be in the Big Sky.

          MY POINT EXACTLY!!!!!

If I was a hardcore SDSU (everytime I type that I keep thinking of San Diego State) fan, I rather be rooting for the Jacks against, say, Weber State or Northern Arizona or the Montana schools year in and year out than against, say, UMKC, IUPUI, or...

Plus, if you win the BSC automatic bid to the Big Dance you'll have a better shot at a higher seed.  A Mid-Con without Valpo won't help!

I understand that, but from all accounts they are not asking anytime soon.

In October, the conference could decide which schools it might want to visit to consider for expansion, Fullerton said.

That sounds like a pretty definite maybe to me.  I will take the bird in the hand, if and when it comes, over the Big Sky's "We could, might, maybe, possibly" any day.

I am with OKC take the first one to invite us.  I personally would be happy with either Conference.  However, according to a story yesterday, "The Mid-Con is expected to vote on new members at its annual league meetings starting June 27 in Chicago" while the Big Sky "could decide which schools it might want to visit" in Oct.

Things could change but right now I think we are Mid-Con bound and I have no problem with that!  8-)

So,...if the Big Sky invites ya, BE HAPPY ABOUT IT, guys!

Football-wise the Big Sky is the best place for Jackrabbits.  Everyone knows the Big Sky plus, you get an automatic 8 games per year without worry.  Whereas a Mid-Con without Valpo in it will drop the conference's name down to the level of, say, the Big South or MEAC where hardly anyone knows who's in the conference.

The bigger the name, the better it is to recruit.
I'm pretty sure the Mid-Con conference has more name recognition to recruits east of the Mississippi than the Big Sky. Most of our recruiting is focused in MN, WI, IA, NE, even IL. Granted, we have expanded South and West. When I talk to people here who are from the eastern US, they really have know idea about the Big Sky. I think a combo of Mid-Con and Gateway would be ideal at this time.

I have to agree with JackMD about the name recognition, that depends upon where you are at. I personally would prefer the Mid Con because it means that I would be able to get to more away games than if SDSU was in the BSC.

I understand what you all are saying about the Mid-Con. But, football does drive realignment. Besides the Big Sky might just surprise everybody and add you all next week so the Mid-Con won't get ya. But, since the Big Sky is a stable conference so they'll take their time looking at expansion whereas the Mid-Con will be desperate for new members after it's most famous program, i.e. Valpo, decided to hi-tail it.

If I was a hardcore fan of SDSU like I'm for WYOMING, I'd would settle for the Mid-Con for the short-term but for the long-term, it's the BIG SKY all the way.

I would settle for any conference right now, but if we are looking long-term, I don't think the Big Sky would be the goal for SDSU. I see a Missouri Valley/Gateway combination being more desired.

If a Mid Con invite does come(and I think it will) I wonder what are the chances of Western Illinois coming over to the Great West. That would really boost the conference. It would add a lot of travel costs to WIU's budget . The new GWFC...??

If we get into the Mid-Con I hope NDSU and SDSU try every means possible to get into the Gateway. Great West just has way too many problems and a combo of the Mid-Con/Gateway would make me a much happier Bison fan. To answer your question WIU would not leave the Gateway for the Great West, too much $$$ to travel in the GWFC comapared to the Gateway.

In Southeast Wisconsin, the Mid-Con is much more recognizable than the Big Sky. That's with all of my feelings towards the Big Sky's prior acts aside. The Big Sky is a powerhouse DIAA football conference. Their basketball teams carry less weight than those in the Mid-Con around here and I would wager everywhere but the North West part of the nation. I think both have their advantages. Mid Con is the better hoops school (even without Valpo) and our best chance to make the big dance as early as possible. Big Sky is the better football situation, but I don't know how anyone can honestly say playing Northern Arizona or Portland State has any more appeal than Oral Roberts in hoops.

I would be most happy with Mid-con and Great West myself. However I will trust the Administration to make the right choices.
