Nope. The building is way too historic and there would be too many upset alumni. Ensuring that the building will be useful in the future, however, should be a priority.

It would be neat to see the Barn completely renovated and turned into a state-of-the-art volleyball/wrestling venue (like some other major schools have done with their old basketball arenas).
Unfortunately, due to the blizzard, I haven't been able to get out to buy that Powerball ticket . . .

Don't worry Filbert. You still have Friday and Saturday to buy that ticket!

I like the idea of that, though parking would be a problem... I've seen Southwest Minnesota's old bb gym that is now their main volleyball gym and it was really nice.
Any improvement to the barn would be worth the money - i love that place
My thoughts for the barn would be cool if it was renovated out into a basketball practice training area. Take out the racketball courts and batting cages and update the hoops on the side and allow for traing and intramurals there. Most places are making updated new basketball training building, how cool would it be too see a old school building that is full of history.

I really like the idea of all of this even though I hate the barn. That place is horrible! I know there is history but it needs to get fixed up. It would be awesome to have that volleyball/wrestling facility, but that won't be possible even in the near future considering all the renovations they will be doing in the next 15 years. (Wellness center, baseball, softball, Coughlin, etc.) The space won't be needed with the new wellness center being built. We're not a big D-1 school and the money isn't there. I think an indoor training facility with turf for the baseball, softball, football, and soccer would be much more useful, even though it is much more expensive. Trying to train all year for baseball and softball has to be difficult.
I'm just writing so don't take anything personal.
But just a thought, what does SDSU have planned for the next 15 years for upgrades in facilities? New dorms? Wellness center? Coughlin? Baseball stadium? Softball? What is ACTUALLY going to be done and is planned to be done?! Not just what is up in the air.....

A lot depends on money. There is a campus plan drawn up. I believe the softball field is finished and the baseball field is close. The student Wellness center will break ground this spring. The campus has a plan that when the money is raised buildings will be raised. It includes stands for the baseball and softball fields, a student athlete development center on the north end zone of CAS. It will include a field house with indoor facilities for football, baseball, softball, and track and field, coaches offices for these sports, a home football lockerroom, a visitor's football lockerroom, athletic training facilities for these sports and football film rooms. There are also plans for new stands on each side of CAS holding 8000 each. This will be designed so a horseshoe can connect them on the south end zone if there is demand for that many seats 20-30 years down the road.
Other new projects on campus include a new chemistry and science building connected to the newer part of Shepard Hall, a new engineering building south of and parallel to Harding Hall, a new Dairy Plant, and a couple of buildings for the new Innovation Campus.
The plans are in place and they are just that, plans. If you want to see them just ask someone in the know and they will fill you in. Filbert and many others on this site have had a better opportunity to view them than me so I will defer but the "plan" is in place.

Historic, maybe, but about two year ago the Foundation held their banquet in the Barn. I had not been in the building for a long time. I was appalled to see the hard wood floor that was once the main attraction of the building was now completly defaced and looked like a hog barn. I think Filbert's idea of renovation for volleyball and other sports that dont require a great amount of seating would be an excellent idea. There was no HPER or Frost when I attended as a student, but if space becomes a premuim and other modern facilities are needed, I would say go ahead and bring the Barn down.
If you want to see a mess, Tuskegee University is an example. It is on a historical register and they are trying to preserve every building built since Booker T Washington arrived on campus. Its hard to get the money to do this and the result, the appearence of the campus goes down with old unoccupied buildings. Often they are waiting on grants and or fund raising to rennovate these buildings. Sometimes it's better to start over with a state of the art new building.

Let's see... build a new, boring, decorated shed or refurbish the historic Barn, one of the longstanding anchors of the campus? Hmmm. Pretty easy one: The Barn isn't going anywhere.
I was fortunate to have attended in the era when the Barn was still used for BB and then the transition to the Frost. I would hate to see the old barn go, but would have to see the cost of renovation v. demolishing and building new. Some great old memories in the barn include the last game played in the building against USD. Afraid the cost of renovation might be prohibitive. My daughter is going to be attending SDSU next year and I have showed her the building and told some of the stories, but they just don't mean much unless you were actually in there for a game and saying hi to WNAX's Norm Hilson in the corws nest.

I have memories of the SDSU Fieldhouse, and commonly called the barn. After the banquet I thought about the current condition and apparently as soon as the ground was broken for Forst, the maintence of the hard wood floor stopped that would have been maybe 1970 or there abouts. Its too bad. I feel something needs to be done with THE BARN, but I not advocating a modern shed. I said it depends on what other things are needed on campus and what space is available. I dont know where a rennovation of this building fits in the project board, but you hope its on the project list.
I believe SDSU is more than the memories of BB games in the barn. I remember having phy ed courses in volleyball and weight lifting in the Barn. Also academic needs are more important than memories too, so I think those purposes could change your no brain choice in a hurray.
I agree with you, Haldersham. As nice at would be to save all the old buildings, sometimes you have to face reality. I live in Yankton where there are lot of historic buildings and every time there is talk of taking one down to make a change, there is usually resistance. You know what they say, "the cemetary is full of people that couldn't be replaced, but life continues to go on and others take their place." We sometimes need to look at facilities the same way.
I sense you were within a decade of when I left SDSU in 1965, so I sure you would also agree when you walk around campus today, its a much better place than then when we were students. Some old problems havent been solved, but by and large the facilities academic and athletically are head and shoulders over what it was a few decades back. The Ag Engineering building was the edge of the world when I attended, and during blizzards a sled of dogs would have been handy transportation. SDSU is much better today and I would hope the improvements will extend indefinitely.
Some have suggested: Why dont we play a game at the Barn? Well the scoreboard is long gone, the bleachers were probably sold off when Frost opened. The biggest change besides the condition of the floor is that the balcony has been enclosed and appears to be used for offices, so that would not work. I think it would teach some to appreciate what we have now and what we can expect into the future. I remember watching a skinny kid from UND sink a number of FT from the balcony. His name was Phil Jackson. You could not have the opportunity today. Is this memory greater than a research park? I dont think so.
