    Re: The Jackrabbit Logo

Just for context, here are some of the clients who have had logos designed by Phoenix Design Works. These people are experts at creating dynamic logos for a wide variety of clients. Maybe we should give them a chance, since their work was good enough for this crowd:

    Here's a partial list:

    University of Tennessee
    Lousiana State University
    University of Arkansas
    University of Oklahoma
    University of Mississippi
    Harvard University
    University of Massachusetts
    Southern Illinois University
    Jacksonville State University
    Troy State University
    Wichita State University
    Cal State Bakersfield
    College of Charleston
    Drake University
    Big West Conference
    Colorado Rockies
    Florida Marlins
    Breeder's Cup
    Indianapolis 500

      Well, this can't be good:

The Phoenix Design Works (the NY consultants) web site has gone away.

      http://www.phoenixdesignworks.com/

I get a Verizon web site saying "this site coming soon."

Maybe they renamed/rebranded to something else, or are re-launching their site, but it does not give me a warm and fuzzy feeling about the company. If someone has a current working link, please post it . . .

thats a fancy list there except for the fact that none of those teams seem to really have anything that jumps out at me as being that great. might not be bad but also might not be worth the trouble of changing our logo for. maybe im wrong but a tough looking rabbit with short legs and lacking creativity doesnt seem to jump out at me as being worthwhile.

          Re: The Jackrabbit Logo

I'm sure they are more than qualified, I just thought it would have been a good project for the students do work through first to get a wide range of ideas and than hire a proffessional design team that could take the students work further if any of it was good, and if none of it was than they could go in their own direction. From what I've seen of the logo I'm pretty sure that the students could have created logos that are comparable or better than that logo.

            Re: The Jackrabbit Logo

Well, I've seen it (the new design) and think it is crummy. Doesn't look much like a jackrabbit to me. the ears are halfway between an Easter Bunny and a range jackrabbit. Derek at the bookstore had a good point when he said he couldn't visualize how the sample on an 8 x 11 sheet would look on a smaller version for shirts, hats, etc.

I realize I'm too traditional on this question, because I've been a fan of the current rabbit since it came out (and was slightly tweaked in the years afterwards.) But I said early-on, I wouldn't be opposed to a new rabbit, if somebody can design one that is better. As far as I'm concerned, the new design doesn't do it.

And congrautlations to Jeremy...he got in some hotwater for running a picture on the front page of the Collegian, which was actually a picture of the design laying on a table, since the committee wouldn't give him a picture.

Finally, there is nothing pretty about a jackrabbit. But the distinguishing feature is the ears. Without the tall ears, standing on end, a jackrabbit becomes an Easter bunny. But I sense that we are going to get the new stylized rabbit whether we like it or not.

              Re: The Jackrabbit Logo

Everybody is too worked up about a logo defining our University. We should worry about having winning/successful programs. We need to put our emotions into increasing our student fan base and alumni donations. Currently our student base for basketball is pathetic, and football games are pretty sad as well. Many of the students left the hobo day game before it was over. I really don't give a crap about the student's opinion in the collegian. They should have taken a poll at the Utah Valley State game from the true fans, both alumni and students who were there. It's nice that the Jackrabbit is unique, like a buckeye, a hoosier, or a tarheel. But, no one will care/recognize it unless we win some games.

Really. What university logos are you a big fan of? And again (how many times do we have to review this?) we HAVE to change our logo. Bugs Bunny is a registered mark of the Time Warner Corporation and our rabbit is a blatant ripoff of that image. We have permission to use it in South Dakota, but cannot market it nationally... AND Time Warner could withdraw that limited use permission any time they choose.

change it fine, but dont keep it so secretive on the design, let people vote on it, and im sure you can make minor changes so its not a rip off anymore and it would still look good. frankly i dont want a rabbit with stubby legs, and a dogs body with a guinea pigs face. from all the different stuff we've been told about the new rabbit that picture aint it, it barely looks like a rabbit to me maybe im wrong but i like to fun cartoony look of a rabbit, rabbits arent mean and tough and what they drew up so far, i was thinking more sleek, athletic graceful. but maybe im wrong.

Minor changes won't make our Bugs Bunny logo any less of a derivative of the trademark owned by Time Warner.

Secretive? There is a committee with representatives from ALL campus stakeholders involved in the design. The process that our administrators chose wasn't invented by them. It wasn't a "secret". It was a process that was used by other universities to do the same thing. I have seen many people on this board defend Dr. Oien and Rob Peterson, thank them for the way they carefully and strategically plan and then thoroughly work their way through a process. Now, apparently they have become reckless and irresponsible. We are where we are because of the vision and leadership they provided. And this logo process, to me, demonstrates how seriously they take these sorts of things. This isn't the time for some free-for-all, circus where we have ridiculous Internet voting on a logo. This logo will represent SDSU (and not just current students, but past students, future students, donors, faculty, etc.) for decades to come. The process they set up, which has precedent around the country, is designed to include representatives of the stakeholders without creating a "too many cooks" situation.

If they had just sprung a new logo on us out of the blue, your criticism would be valid. As it is, they undertook a process that sought input throughout without opening the thing up to a ridiculous circus that would only result in the least offensive (and probably most vanilla) logo winning out. Go Fighting Amoebas!

Oh... and that's right... we don't even know what the final product looks like. We have seen a grainy photo shot through a window of a black and white printout of part of the logo. Oh, and it was photographed at an angle that might distort the proportions of the rabbit and make it look less sleek and agile than it is. And oh, yeah, the logo was a preliminary version. There was no color and no text as there will be on the final. So maybe... just maybe it's too soon to be judging the end result.

SDSU is too big to play around and use some rinky-dink process to select a logo. The stakes for marketing our athletic product are much too high. This is an instance where we should trust our athletic administrators and the student, faculty, and other representatives on the committee to act in the best interest of the university. Our administrators have a pretty good track record when it comes to building our athletic program. This is part of their plan. Let's give them a chance to execute it.

as you said it represents every one past present and future, thats why students faculty and alumni should vote not everyone. If its changed enough that it doesnt exactly look like bugs then its not copying the same thing. its a rabbit there can be some similarities but not the same in every detail. im fine they want a new logo but it if doesnt start looking a lot better then id rather not see it. maybe you want a logo that looks like what every other school has but i perfer something that few would have.

It also sounds like they arent taking in peoples input in the selection group. the collegian article pointed that out that they so far havent gone with anything that was talked about doing and they ignored student imput. I trust the people in charge but things better start looking a lot better then it currently does. dont tell me your happy with the preliminary drawing either way, even if it is black and white and at an angle.
