    Re: The Jackrabbit Logo

I know that the new logo is nearly finished, but I got to thinking about incorporating the letters S-D-S-U into the rabbit logo.  I know that the Washington State Logo uses the W-S-C letters to make the head of a cougar in profile.  I would like to see some art student (that means someone that can draw better than me, I have no skills) draw a rabbit using the letters S-D-S-U.

If the rabbit body was drawn in profile view, the first "S" could represent the rear of the rabbit and the hind leg.  The "D" could be incorporated into the body.  The second "S" could represent the front of the rabbit and front leg.  The letter "U" could be incorporated into the head and ears.

    SDSU

Something like this. Obviously, this a very crude drawing of a rabbit, but if you look at it the right way, you can see the outline of a rabbit. Anyway just a thought.

I have to say, the drawing of the rabbit isn't very impressive, but it seems to me that you'd need to see it in combination with the other graphical elements ("SDSU", "South Dakota State" "STATE" etc.) to know if it would work or not.

          Re: The Jackrabbit Logo

I wish people would withhold judgment until they actually see a final version in something other than a grainy photo of a printout laying on a desktop and shot through a window at an awkward angle.

It's a realistic bunny. I really like the ones I have seen in color and in context. Part of the negative reaction here is probably a case of "it's not what I expected". Well, get over that and try to imagine it painted 10' wide on the court at Frost. It's distinctive and, dare I say, cute. Cute's OK with me. To me it looks fast and agile and a little like you might want to pick it up and hug it before it ripped your neck out, Monty Python style.

Tastes will differ. But I really don't care for the muddled Collegian reaction. They're saying the problem isn't the new look, but what's wrong is the administration didn't consult enough people or the right people or enough members of the Collegian staff or some unnamed local graphic designer. Then at the end they say this is not the right bunny. Is the bunny itself a problem or not? Obviously Collegian editors didn't like the process and are unable to step back and look at the bunny objectively... oh, wait, the bunny isn't finished yet. So what's the point of all of this again?

I'm a little frustrated that the Collegian gang chose this of all battles to take on. Notice I didn't say surprised. One is never surprised by the narcisism of 20-year-olds who think they know better than administrators and staff with decades of experience in these issues. Or better than a design firm that was apparently good enough for Harvard.

I was one of those narcistic 20 year olds once. Its a part of growing up and gaining wisdom and learning patience. I think the sketch of the new rabbit holds plenty of potential. Stip down the current mascot to just a sketch drawing, not the same huh? I am excited to see what might come of it. Others are welcome to disagree. In the end someone will have to make the decision.

Ah there is the issue I have with it so far.  We are the Jackrabbits not the fluffy petting zoo bunnies.  That looks way to much like a cottontail to me, but I will reserve my judgment until I see a more final version.

Maybe they should be looking at something a little more like say the cross country rabbit :

I fail to see a significant difference there. One thing I know is that the early versions were too fluffy and thick and the end product has become more sleek... like the cross country bunny. I guess we could just adopt an amoeba as our mascot and then everybody could agree on exactly the form it should take.

                      Re: The Jackrabbit Logo

I think it is truly great that everyone has a passion for the new jackrabbit logo. In addition, I think it is equally great that the Collegian and students continue to voice their suggestions/concerns/opinions. In this instance, the Collegian may have got the cart out in front of the horse...the best analogy I could come up with?! My guess is the reason the committee is unwilling to share the rabbit logo renderings and variations is that they do not for lack of a better word 'own' the images....thus sharing these would lead to publishing....not the desired result. Again, my guess is that the design company still has proprietary rights over all the designs until one is chosen. Hopefully in the future, journalistic fever can be remedied by a cold towel, a little research and some patience and trust in whomever is making the decision. As you can tell from my ranting....frustrating article to read.

Hope to see everyone at the game on Saturday....GO JACKS!

My personal opinion is that if the first version was "too fluffy and thick" and that the most recent version is "more sleek" then perhaps they could "do" whatever they did before yet again.  I believe that the Jackrabbit is still too fluffy and thick; again I think he looks like a cottontail on the run.

Jimmy, you seem much attached to this work in progress.  Can one assume that you are on the board?  You asked fellow posters earlier in this thread if they had ever seen a Jackrabbit.  I have.  Have you?  You seem to be enamored with the idea of having a "cute" mascot; you keep using the word "bunny".  Is that what we are after?  I know one of the big drivers is the ability to merchandise our “brand” (I/E the Jackrabbit Logo).  What is the demographic that we are aiming for 5-12 year old girls?

Like I said I am willing to wait and see what the final version looks like and Jimmy if you love this version that is ok, we are each entitled to our own opinions.   However I would suggest you not go and view the Collegian poll on the new rabbit (I know, I know it is not scientific) were the results are overwhelmingly negative about your bunny (74% hate it, 18% think it is ok, 7% love it, and 2% don't care - - of course that equals 101% but you get the idea ).

I will grow to love the rabbit in whatever form he takes, I will buy the cloths and wear them with pride, as he will represent my beloved University.  However, I guess I just expected more from the good folks at Phoenix Design.  Again, just my opinion with what I have seen so far.

                        Go State!

P.S.  I too think that the picture in the colligian story could easily be a dog/puppy if it had a different head.

I'm one that doesn't like the current version. Scrapping this version and starting over wouldn't be a bad idea. Regardless of what happens though, I'll take solace in the fact the stretch SD is still going to be around!!!

                            JACKS' NEW LOGO DELAYED
It's no-go for South Dakota State's new logo.

The updated Jackrabbit insignia will not be released at Saturday's men's basketball game against North Dakota State (as originally hoped) because it's not yet finalized.

University relations director Jenny Crickard said Wednesday that she recently requested several new versions of the logo from Phoenix Design Works, which is handling the design.

Crickard hopes to have the updated options in hand late this week or early next week, after which the school's logo committee can again go about gathering input and opinions from the community. . . . (read more)

In my opinion, the strech SD will be around for many, many years to come, unlike the new rabbit, whatever one they pick.
I am REALLY glad that everyone seems to be so "worked" up about it though.  It really shows we care about out team and the future of SDSU!
