Is there a difference in being a knee specialist vs. a knee specialist that is sports focused?
No, there are orthopedists who specialize in specific joints (or limbs), believe it or not.

For instance, there are two orthopedists in the country who specialize in hip labrums. (Snookums went to the one in Nashville; the other one is in Aspen).

    The human body is complex.

      Re: Orthopedic Institute

My 2 cents, sports medicine is not the same as orthopedic medicine. Any physician from any specialty can apply for and complete a sports medicine fellowship if accepted. Many family practice doctors choose to do this, certainly not all. Orthopedic surgeons are trained to do surgery, they also learn diagnostic techniques necessary to allow them to decide what the next right step to treat a patient is. Some orthopedic surgeons specialize in certain joints and even more specifically certain parts or procedures on certain joints. Those persons usually aren't sports medicine physicians as well. It usually the more general practice individuals.

You don't do surgery on the football practice or game field or sidelines. A physician, trained in sports medicine, no matter their primary specialty is qualified to assess athletes injuries on the field and make proper treatment recommendations or referrals. Diagnostic studies, treatment plans, and specialty referrals (i.e. hand specialist) are then completed when deemed appropriate. AT's or PT's are the people implementing the treatment regimen recommended by the physician. They would certainly have legitimate input on this topic.

Sumner's thumb injury had nothing to do with the switch from OI to Sanford and I know 76 isn't suggesting that. The way the injury is being treated may or may not be a point of contention, I have no idea about that.
