I do know that Sanford and Son acquired Orthopedic Institute in Fargo a few months back and is doing business as Sanford. I believe the SF and Brookings Orthopedic are part of the same organization. OI is out only because it no longer exists.

Not true. Sanford did not purchase OI in Fargo, because there has never been an OI in Fargo (there was an Orthopedic Associates in Fargo but they merged w/ Sanford in 2010). And there is still an Orthopedic Institute in Sioux Falls ( http://orthopedicinstitutesf.com ).

Sorry I stand to be corrected. I had not noticed the difference in names. I am more familar with the Fargo clinic since my lady friend has had both knee and Hip replacements. Seems like the waiting room has more medicare recipentant than athletes., just my impression. I had thought the one in SF and Fargo were connected, but apparently not true. And poppa1 first post does have significance, sorry.

Very easy to confuse these issues. As a physician owner of an independent practice I often see the surprise in my patients eyes when I tell them I don't work for Sanford of Avera. Patients assume that since the hospital in town in Avera and I take care of patients there that I am an employee, this is not the case for us or for OI.

I am sad to see OI replaced by Sanford but understand the politics.

I am not going to get into who is better, because both are good. But I will say this, I think you will see some positives w/ Sanford Orthopedics & Sports Medicine (and I am not just talking about money).

              I don't doubt that a bit.

Was looking for something else and ran across this thread. I think that if you feel that the change from OI to Sanford is a positive from the care standpoint, you might want to talk to the trainers who are on the job every day. They would not agree with you. The new team doc for the FB team is not a sports medicine specialist and it's interesting that the first major injury to the football team is a thumb. My understanding is that Sanford Ortho does not have a hand specialist. I guess we'll see how this works out.

Disagree, I may be bias but...

Sanford Orthopedic & Sports Medicine does indeed have a hand specialist. Dr. Robert Van Demark (http://www.sanfordhealth.org/find-a-..._van_demark_jr)
The other two doctors working with the football team are Dr. Verle Valentine (whom did a fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic, very well known sports medicine clinic)
http://www.sanfordhealth.org/find-a-...erle_valentine From his bio: "He has served as a team physician in many capacities including the WNBA, NBA, LPGA, and multiple DI universities"

                  Dr. Brian Aamlid: http://www.sanfordhealth.org/find-a-doctor/brian_aamlid

That is correct, with his son being in the SDSU athletic dept. Verle Valentine is also a former basketball player and athletic training student from SDSU. To say these two don't have Sports Medicine experience is just plain false. Forgot to mention Dr. Valentine is also on the Board of Directors for American Medical Society for Sports Medicine. And yes I am employee w/ Sanford, but I have never said and will never say a bad thing about OI, because they have great doctors as well.

I will say I missed the boat on the hand surgeon however I'll stand my ground on the expertise of the team Docs. It really doesn't matter that they are each former athletes. Verle is a family practice doc, not a surgeon. He has similar credentials to Dr. Smith from OI. Aamlid is an ortho who specializes in hips and knees, not sports injuries. As I said before, talk to the trainers and see what they have to say. I think you'll find they are very disappointed with the change in providers.

You are entitled to your opinion. I will pass your and the athletic trainers concerns on.

No need to worry about my opinion. The trainers are a bit more of a concern however.

I have no dog in this discussion or any direct experience, knowledge or expertise, but one question after reading your post. Wouldn't an orthopedic surgeon that specializes in knees, like you stated Dr. Aamlid is, be a benefit to sports programs since so many injuries are knee related? Is there a difference in being a knee specialist vs. a knee specialist that is sports focused?
