That being said, consistency seems to be an issue with some of these guys. Part of that could be attributed to youth maybe but for Sloan and Carlson isn't this their 3rd and 4th years in the program?
For someone as highly ranked as Clay, he sure seems to wrestle a lot of close matches. He's got a tough next match to reach the podium.

The last couple weeks have been pretty brutal after all the “it’s all about March” talk for 6 months. Talk about anti-climactic.
Sloan was dead in the water halfway through that match - just getting run over.
Maybe Carlson can sort of save the day, but he’s certainly been walking a razor thin line.

I remember when I started grad school at SDSU early in the Bono era and I really enjoyed following the team. I had been really irritated as a Minnesota fan because the expectations were so high and they almost always failed to meet them. SDSU was fun because there were no expectations, they were going to have losing records almost every year and any small indicator of progress was something to get excited about. If they lost a close match or failed to qualify a wrestler for nationals, well that was okay, after all, it was SDSU, what did I expect? As time went on, the team got better and investment on the part of the university and community the grew quickly, to the point were they could fund all 9.9 scholorships, join the big 12, attract a highly sought after head coach, start a regional training center, and build a state-of-the-art facility. Now the plucky, up-and-coming team that I once knew has all the advantages that a team could hope for and, because of that, they're not as fun to route for any more. Expectations are high now, and the grace period granted to new coaches has come and gone. Now, when the team drops the ball to the greatest extent that one could imagine at the most important part of the year, the correct way to feel is mad. To feel any other way is to belittle the expectations that this program has worked so hard to earn. For a team this good to perform this poorly across the board at the end of the year requires mismanagement. I'm not an expert in peak performance but I can say with confidence that the team the wrestled NDSU was better than the team at Big 12s and, those who qualified wrestled better at Big 12s than they did at the national tournament. This is an error that effects the legacy of this team and the lives of the individuals who make up this team. 6th at Big 12s with four national qualifiers is very bad for this team. 44th at NCAA with 3.5 points and no all-Americans is abysmal. I don't think we need to make any coaching changes (I am actually heartened by the fact that there is no way that Coach Hahn is going to be poached for at least a couple of years now), and I don't think that we need to give up hope, but we should be mad. This is good team and we should expect so much more from them than this.

Do you understand the depth at this tournament? They didn’t perform like they expected to but to call their performance abysmal is insulting to the athletes and the coaches. If you wouldn’t feel comfortable saying something like that to them face to face maybe don’t type it, if you are crazy enough to do that be sure to let everyone know when and where so we can watch. Don’t go spreading your nonsense to fans of SDSU that don’t follow the sport very close. The way you talk they were a top 10 program for the last 5 years and didn’t end up with an All-American. The more you type the more it becomes apparent of how little you understand college wrestling.

I actually looked it up and, compared to the ranking that I looked at (I looked at wrestlestat and flowrestling to be safe), they underperformed more than any other team in the country. 1) so if clay would have pulled the upset in the bloodround (r12) against sebas (Sebastian Rivera), it would have guaranteed him 4 more team points for an 8th place finish which would have pushed SDSU’s place from 44th to a tie for 34th. Would that have helped your feeling about the team placement?
2). Did you happen to watch any of SDSU’s matches at the Big12 or NCAA tournament? Or are you basing these performances off the box scores.

Hate to say it, but Wombat is 99%+- spot on. Was the field deeper this year? Yup, but the B12 tourney can definitely be your gauge vs the national tournament if it puts it in better perspective for you. Somebody needs to step up and outperform their seed, winning is contagious, unfortunately so is losing. Carlson should never have put himself in the position to have to wrestle Seabass in the blood round.

If we can’t see what’s being built, then that’s on us as fans. 77 programs wish their team could have done better this past weekend, it’s no reason to have a sky is falling attitude. I for one am excited next year and how this roster is coming together. Our 4 wrestlers at the NCAA’s wrestled well and will come back hungrier next year after just missing out on some close matches. Going back to conferences, I couldn’t have been more proud to be a Jack fan than after watching how cook gutted out those performances. You could tell he was hurt yet he gave grello everything he could handle. That’s just one example from conferences where the box score isn’t the “be all.”
