Not exactly. Pretty sure they want to win with a woman head coach, based on the 30+ year history of the program.

I'm not saying they won't consider hiring AJ, but I'm pretty sure the odds are stacked against him, and I don't know that he'd want to coach there anyway. Sure he'd have the same recruiting area, but I don't think he'd be allowed to recruit the same kids, I don't think he'd have the kind of support he gets from the AD here, and whatever can be said about the money has to be balanced against what he would have to do to earn it.

AJ doesn't recruit the TC metro, and I think that's as much a matter of choice as it is a question of being able to land players that are in the Gophers' backyard.

If he's coaching at the U of M, and Wisconsin & Iowa start getting the best players in the cities, he's under far more pressure to respond to that than he is for, say, letting Ostarello end up at Purdue. Even if those players aren't a good fit for his system.

Even assuming Minnesota were interested (which is, I think, highly doubtful), you're looking at trading in a tremendous amount of freedom and support for a higher paycheck and a bit more notice.

Consider also that the Gophs will remember that AJ backed out of the UW-GB deal after accepting it.

Yes he does...Leah Dietel, Hannah Strop, and Megan Waytashek are all from the Twin Cities metro.

One Job AJ would not even hesitate in taking is Minnesota! To go back to his home state and coach the Gophers! IMO it is a no-brainer for them to give him a call when you recruit the #3, 10 and 23 best players in the state to play for SDSU.

How many male coaches are in women's basketball? That may have something to do with their history.

Now back to the season coming up, We are going to be bigger and better!

Poor choice of words on my part. AJ hasn't recruited Minneapolis, St. Paul, or the inner ring suburbs. He hasn't recruited the most densely populated section of the cities, for whatever reason.

I haven't gotten in the habit of considering New Prague (for instance) to be part of the TC metro, even though it is.

Just because he hasn't shown a history of recruiting the "inner ring suburbs" doesn't mean he can't or won't if he were to end up at U of M someday.

OTOH, I'm sure he'd be active in that area right now if he thought it would help the program out.

It was either Hanna Strop or Megan Waytashek that said that she envisioned herself as a Jackrabbit from a very early point in her high school career, and she comes from Pam Borton's backyard.

AJ could recruit talent from within the TC core if he wanted to. He doesn't.

                ---

I think AJ would find himself under considerable pressure to change his recruiting strategies at the U of M.

It might be an offer too good to pass up, but I don't think success in that program is guaranteed, based on his success at this level.

I think he'd have a better shot at success at Wisconsin than Minnesota. But that could just be my negative opinion of the Gophers athletic department showing through.

Here's a scenario....AJ stays at SDSU and continues to build this program into a perennial NCAA tournament qualifier; a program that keeps getting higher and higher rated recruits every year and pretty soon is vying for Sweet 16 berths on a regular basis.

Aside from $$ alone (...and money isn't everything), what makes the UofM job so lucrative? I haven't looked it up, but other than that one magical run a handful of years back with Whalen and McCarville, have they ever done anything?

About the only thing, I think, a BCS coaching gig would get AJ is a shot at a national championship.

But that would require a commitment from the AD's office that I don't think exists at the U of M (and probably not at Wisconsin, Iowa, or Iowa State).

                    ---

I hope AJ stays here, I think once you're at a program 10+ years it gets harder and harder to leave every year. You don't see many coaches changing jobs after 15 years in one spot.

There are actually more male head coaches (57%) in women's college basketball than there are female head coaches (43%). Before Title IX, over 90% of women's college basketball coaches were female, but that has changed since it's passing (though women participating in sports has skyrocketed).

I believe a young lady from North St.Paul made a visit during the season.

Yep, talked to her parents in the bookstore. Ridiculous to assert that AJ chooses not to recruit certain areas in the Twin Cities.

You can tell the season is over by discussion on this thread. I have no idea where AJ been nor where he is going to go. I just hope he does not get another job offer.

At least you are willing to admit that. Zoo, obviously must be traveling in AJ's back pocket. No wait he's an expert on everything.

AJ would take the Minnesota job in a heartbeat if it were offered to him. If you dont think that is so, IMHO you have a very low basketball IQ.
