There a real snowstorm in Kansas tonight. Being from Northeast SD and having driven many a mile in the winter the drive tonight was challenging. Highway 81 is completely snowpacked in northern Kansas with heavy snowfall, 25 mph north winds, and periods where visibility was limited to 50 feet. Multiple vehicles in the ditch.
Visibility got better the further south we went but the roads become wetter, more ice covered and more slippery. I would have continued on but I've a van load of kids. They needed a break after more than 5 hours on the road. Weather forecast looks discouraging as it pertains to travel tomorrow. Damn.

Thanks for the updates MD! You made the right choice to stop...you've made it a good distance and should be fine to get to Norman on time. If you have a chance, could you post some weather/travel updates tomorrow....3 of us are planning on taking off around 8pm Sat night from SF area hoping at most we'll catch the back end of storm and still make it....but if it is sticking around through Sunday, screw it.

As of right now, it looks like that plan will work until you hit Oklahoma.
Right now they're saying the storm will persist in the OKC-Norman area until sometime Sunday afternoon. These spring storms are notoriously unpredictable, so if I were you I'd be checking the National Weather Service web sites for updates and the latest info, and hoping it will speed up a bit and get out of the area a bit sooner (no pun intended).
We are going to start moving now. No precip at this time, snow packed roads, radar looks bad south of Wichita but now is our best chance to make up some ground.

After reading Filbert's weather advisory, we decided to try to "beat" it, and took off at 7:30 p.m. Friday night. Drove all night. Terrible roads from Nebraska City to Topeka, and then had real visibility and ice problems this morning (Saturday), but still rolled into Norman by 8:30 a.m. Hit the sack for awhile, and now (2 p.m.) looked out the window and there is no snow and no activity...don't know if that will hold throughout the night or not. BTW...had pretty good roads on the Kansas Tollway.
In Norman now. Some more difficult patches through Kansas but once we hit the turnpike it was fairly easy going. We were stopped on I35 just south of the OK/KS border for 15 minutes, not sure why. No snow in Norman right now and doesn't look like there will be much. So, if the system moves out of Kansas like it is suppose to it should be fairly easy to get here.

Thanks for the updates MD and #1 Fan....I feel much better now...leaving SF area around 8pm....probably catch a few hours of sleep in Wichita. GO JACKS!

At 246pm the OHP was advising no travel in the northern counties of OK according to Safe Travel. This includes I35 from Kansas and the Topeka area.
Roads in se Kansas werent much better.
They advised no travel when we went through as well. Roads were no worse than average for a SD winter. That said, the majority of the people on the roads here have not experienced what most SDakotans have.
Snowing pretty good right now but still not bad. Heading to O'Connells pub just north of the OU campus for a Jackrabbit gathering.
