Stop by the downtown book store and check out the selection of Jacks gear. Many things she liked but decides to get the "I bleed blue & yellow" shirt at the game. She is pretty pumped up at this point.

But the best is yet to come and she gets a huge thrill as one of the Junior Jacks to be introduced with the team. When we are meeting with the staff to explain what they need to do it is really loud and the two girls can barely hear what they are being told. When the Jacks come back on the floor, it got even louder and the big smiles got a little more hesitant. Then they go through the stuff and as we head back to our seats, she tells me that it was pretty cool and she wasn't as nervous as she thought she was going to be.

As the game starts, she is not pleased with how things go, but in the end the Jacks get a comfortable win.

A night my daughter will never forget, and neither will her father.

Rep points to you, fantasmic post.... print it out and give it to her for her 16th Birthday!!!

She does have a first good step...but can't finish. Shot 2 for 9 and either had shots blocked or got too far under.

As for the game, Doc has a good post on the relative difference between the two teams. The Jacks were tight and showed it (they had the pressure of performing before the home crowd and the pressure of "need to win big" on their backs.) The Yotes were calmer and had no pressure (just stay within 20, etc.). But there is little comparison between the players for the two teams.

CF is obviously right in earlier posts that IF the Yotes get better players, they will do better...what a quaint thought. The question is...will they? The Jacks got the best players out of South Dakota last year, got one of Minnesota's best (and by the way we missed Leah Dietel's inside defense and rebounding strength last night), and have a strong recruiting class next year and a good start on the following year. So the answer is: SDSU will continue to get better too...the Yotes still have a long ways to go (and remember, SDSU was in the WNIT in it's third year of transition...that won't happen down south next year.)

If I hear the word rivalry one more time I may just throw up. The Lady Jacks have now won 29 of the last 31 meetings. The only two wins by USD came at the hands of two Jacks transfers. If you look the word rivalry up it will likely refer to being competetive. This USD/SDSU womens games has not been a rivalry.

That said it was a great atmosphere last night. But the better team clearly prevailed.

The one thing I did miss from previous USD / SDSU games was more:

        COWBELLS!

Bring those cowbells back. Good win ladies. Its something Jacks fans are expecting from this program.

First of all, congratulations on your win. I was not there, but did listen to the game and talk to several people this morning who were there. SDSU has improved immensely from earlier this year, and that is a credit to your coach.

I understand all your comments regarding beating the U, chest pounding and such. I would have done it on our board had we won. But if you really look statistically at the game, the entire game was even with the exception of one stat. And that was turnovers. That being said, that's a credit to your defense. However, our defense did provide more problems for you than most of you are conceding to. We are just plain not very good on the offensive side of the ball. The turnovers you created are what won the game for you. Other than that, it was a statistical dead heat. Shooting percentage, rebounds, etc.........dead even. Turnovers, HUGE advantage SDSU.

Take this win and do something with it. Go win the Summit and make it to the NCAA's. You got a nice win last night, but I have to tell you as a UDOT fan, I don't feel all that badly how the game played out. I am not surw what the homecourt is worth, but I would say 6-10? If so, then you are about a 10 point better team than we are right now. I would also say that this isn't the best team we have had the past 3-4 years, but I would make the same claim about yours.

As a fan of the game, and a fan of the renewed rivalry, congrats on your win last night. Your gals were very deserving. Good crowd noise in the background on the radio, and from many have have said on here, the fans were responsibly behaved. Good start.

Good post YF. Now I hope you take your last statement and work on your university to respond in kind as to fan behavior. In the last 38 years of watching SDSU basketball, I've only seen ONE incident where something was thrown on the floor (the frozen coyote that hit/hurt SDSU cheerleader Margie Fiedler). In many years, particularly the last 15 of our D-II era, I've seen dead rabbits and carrots strewn on the floor at most games with Augie and USD at the Dome.

I want to believe (albeit a difficulty for me) that responsible behaviour will happen at the Dome when we are finally forced to play basketball in that god-awful facility for basketball. I believe the Summit League WILL do something to make that happen, and I want to believe that the officials at USD also will make the effort. BUT, I can tell you all that it won't happen if the physical makeup is not changed, where the crazies are allowed to be five feet from the visitors bench and spew vitriol at the players. Take that away, and I believe the problem is solved. Put them at the other end with their bench! It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

PS. It would be very nice, if USD could get a basketball facility built, and would solve most of the problems.

Statistics are often deceiving. That is the case in this game. SDSU is clear and away a much better all-around team than USD right now, as it should be. We would beat the current USD team every time we played them regardless of where the game was held. That is not bravado, that is fact. That doesn't mean USD is horrible, we are just a lot better.

Our offense struggled tremendously because we could not make WIDE OPEN shots. Show me a defensive scheme built around the opponent missing WIDE OPEN shots and I'll show you a team that loses almost every game.

Coach Williams had a good strategy that appeared to be a design to prevent the game from being a complete blowout. It still would have been a complete blowout if we make 2 or 3 of the 10 or 12 WIDE OPEN looks we had from outside.

Moseley does well given her lack of height, Hegge has the potential to be a special player, Kinder, Roche and Iverson are nice players. Good luck to them and the rest of the Coyotes going forward.

I tend to agree with JackMD, though, I'll stop short of saying SDSU would win every time...I'd hope the current Coyote Ladies could steal at least 1 of 100 from the Lady Jacks (after all, history shows we're capable of snagging 2 of 30 ). Anyway, no big surprises from this game. I'm not the biggest follower of women's hoops, but here's my take:

My feeling watching the game was similar to what I feel watching an underdog make a run at a far more talented squad in the men's NCAA tournament. The favorite is slow out of the gates, while the dog comes out swinging, hot from the field and concentrating its defensive efforts on its opponent's greatest offensive strengths, essentially "giving something up" in a gamble to overcome the odds. The thing about SDSU is that they are good inside and outside. Given our lack of size and depth, we were somewhat forced to pick our poison. We gave SDSU wiiiiiiiiiiiiiide open looks from the perimeter. We were fortunate early because their guard was ice cold. Had State come out shooting the ball well, this could've been a much uglier game.

Conversely, SDSU played us balanced and tight defensively. At times, we struggled with simple exchanges well off the perimiter. We end up dribbling the ball way too much, and the shot clock is our constant enemy. Offensively, SDSU was not restricted by a 6-player rotation. They had license to push. The more talented team won. USD shouldn't win that game, and they didn't.

I really don't get this USD's defense was really good because we missed a bunch of wide open shots in the first 10 minutes. I believe AJ was quoted in TV's blog as saying they (the Jacks) they could get any shot they wanted at any time.

And for the record, I think USD has a very good coach. The team will get better over time, but last night was not a great defensive performance by USD.

USD was overmatched at almost every position, with the exception of Hegge who can dribble drive and find middle range baseline jumpers. She didn't look to spot up and didn't get the ball in the post with her back to the basket. Coach Williams had a good game plan running isolation for Hegge, spotting up his shooters, letting the young woman with the big body try to clear the board for others. There post player was plenty big just not tall enough to be effective on the block. She does a great job moving people out of the lane, however. This does allow for long rebounds and they can end up in anyone's hands.

Kinder is a DI 6th or 7th player. She has a decent face up game and can handle okay but not a point. A little slow on defense. Roche seems like a hustler but again just doesn't have the all around skills to compete nightly at the DI level. Iverson can spot up and hit open jumpers but is slow on the defensive end.

Most of USD's offensive possessions resulted in shots under 10 seconds on the shot clock and many of those were with under 5. Game plan or not that is putting a lot of pressure on the offense.

For the Jacks, we just needed to hit even 2 or 3 of the WIDE OPEN looks from 3-point land in the first 15 minutes of the game and we win by 30 plus going away. Our inability to make shots that we usually hit with regularity lead to some forced offensive possessions and prevented us from setting up defensive pressure. Made the run at the end of the half to put things pretty close to out of reach.

Then, in the 2nd half, we blew some foul shots, didn't grab some rebounds that lead to easy put backs for them and made some poor decisions with the ball. USD had the ball with 5 minutes left down 12, chance to hit a 3 and cut it to 9. They got called for 3-seconds, we got the ball and the game was over.

SDSU has a much better team right now and would win every night against USD. That said, USD has potential. Hegge could be a special player. Kinder is good enough. Roche can be the point. Find a couple of longer girls to play inside and get a kid like S. Ashley from Roosevelt and you might have a top 8 team in the Summit league.
This is the best overview of the game I've seen, well done. The part especially about hitting maybe 4 of those first 10 threes and this thing is a drubbing. Their defense would have to come out and then the the feeds down low would have come time after time after time. I thought they should have just had Young play the point after it was apparent Michelson was not getting it going and dare her to shoot it. Granted Jill was only 1-4 from three, if she had as much space as Michelson that percentage would have been higher. Macie's threes were so wide open it was hard not to take them.

That said. This team is going nowhere fast in the postseason if they play that tight in big games. Whatever the opposite of "nerves of steel" is, that is what they had, for way too long. I was pretty disgusted at how they played for long stretches due to what appeared to be nerves. Bad shooting, bad FT shooting, bad offensive rebounding...this will get you routed against teams such as ORU and OU. The lack of a leader on this team is the biggest reason for this, I believe. For the most part AJ looked very cool and collected, like a guy who's coached in big games. A lot of these players have played in a game to go to the Big Dance and two NCAA tournament games and they looked like a bunch of freshmen.

Did you see the championship game last year?

I'm not making excuses for this year's team, but let's not forget how slow out of the gate last year's team was, and how awful they looked in the first half of the championship game against Oakland.

This is about as good I've seen posted(in the 3 pages I've read, so far) on the game. Here are my 2 cents.

I don't know about 1 out of 100 but upsets always happen and this would be no different.

USD gave Macie open 3's and she missed them(1-9). She shots about 38% from out there and her misses from out there kept it close. I think AJ's comment about getting good shots all night were that USD left 2 players open. They had their shots, they just didn't make them. If we play again, I'm sure Macie will do better but everybody has off nights and this was 1 of hers. Eventually, other Jacks started hitting their open looks.

I think Ryun wanted his team to run the shot clock down. That limited the positions in the game. The shorter the game, the better for him. He played 6 players 28+ minutes. SDSU played 6 players 20+ minutes but 2 others played 13+ minutes.

I liked Roche's hustle. She was their leading scorer and rebounder(I think). Hegge's ability to put it on the floor was tough. SDSU matched up with that fairly well but she has talent. Mosley had a quick 1st step but her height and getting under the basket hurt her. Kinder hit some open 3's in a short span of time but after that, she was quiet. We'll see how deep USD is in 2 years when they are in the Summit.
