    Re: GDT--Wayne State

I hope you don't think I'm picking on the team but I saw one thing I didn't really like(if there could be in a convincing win).
Their #54 caused problems for our inside players all night. I think Carla, Jennie and Lieh had 12 fouls between the 3 of them. They are young and will get better but this is something I'll watch for the 1st few weeks of the season. This group has a true freshman, a red-shirt freshman and a sophomore but Maria will need some help against the better teams this year. Players like Ketty and Kristin can play down there but they might not have enough size against some teams.
Other than that, they played great. It's nice to start the season and have every player on the team get to see some time on the court.
Yes, they played a lot of zone. In the post game, AJ said that he normally doesn't play zone teams in exhibitions but he thinks some teams in the early part of the schedule will play zone against SDSU.

Soooo...we played a lot of zone, or Wayne played a lot of zone...I guess my comment was geared toward Wayne playing a lot of zone D.

      Go Jacks!!
      SDSU...Passionate, Relentless, Champions.

Wayne looked like a solid D2 team to me. They were beefier and stronger than some Summit League teams I have seen (I'm looking at you, Centenary and UMKC).

Maria was great. The whole team was a little tentative, but that's to be expected. I suspect we'll see good improvement Thursday vs. Mankato, which is a really good team (defending D2 national champs).
        Holy nutmeg!

Well, in all fairness to Mankato, they lost almost all their starters, and it will be a tough matchup for them. I know Tiffany Moe is looking forward to playing in Frost and being back in Brookings for a game...and I'm just pleased that she was able to be on the DII national team last year. But her supporting cast could be fairly thin.

At least 2 starters back in Tiffany and Andrea Walsh who was a high school teammate of Ketty's.

They're ranked #12 and were picked to win the NSIC. They've got 8 players back from the title team, including several sophomores and juniors who got minutes last year. I'd guess they're better than Wayne.

Wayne played a lot of zone. AJ seems to think some teams might play zone against SDSU early in the season this year. I should have made it clearer the 1st time.

Two of our future opponents, Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee State played thier exhibition games Mon. MTSU won over Carson-Newman 96-68 and W. Ky won over Lindsey Wilson 96-63.We won Sun 93-51.
Which doesn't mean much other than div 1 schools like to schedule these exhibition games to evaluate the players performance and find any team weaknesses before the actual season playing "counters" begins.
I know that MTSU will be plenty seasoned prior to our game with the Jacks by having played LSU, Tenn,Xavier, & Louisville. We counter with Gonzaga,Ariz St,& W. Ky as our stiffest competition.
I like the fact that our margin of victory in our exhibition was larger than the other two schools.I think our team is really developing fast, & we need to, since our 1st two games are tough ones.I think we can compete strongly & win against any team on our schedule this year. The season looks good for another great year for the jacks.

Wayne State was #7 ranked in the pre-season picks(about the middle of the NSIC,
commenting on Wayne State # 7 & Mankato #1 in NSIC, so there's no confusion as to who we're talking about).

Hey Jack4Life, didn't Lindsey Wilson live on third floor Binnewies in 73-74?

Does anyone else think that Maria asserted herself as far as being the " team leader" AJ was looking for?I know it was just an exhibition game, but she sure looked like the "go to person" should the team experience "lapse" in scoring,& needs a spark to ignite the rest of the team....or maybe itll be all the seniors this year who'll guide the team & make the big plays.Last year, you'd have to go with the seniors mostly, but every game had a new hero so to speak, who led the team.Maybe, that's what's meant when someone say's the team is " well balanced".It makes it hard to pick out one person as the leader when it's so many people in different games who lead the team.I'd go with the person the team respects & admire's the most, who play's hard & gives 100% all the time.
If they're all that way, then it's back to square one again.

A person can lead the team in many ways other than scoring. Just as last year, we are going to have multiple players have big nights throughout this season. It's been discussed at length on this board that that is the beauty of this team and program. We have many players who can step up on any given night.

Most teams have a "go to" player that the other teams tend to key on and try to shut down. Whats nice about the Jacks is pretty much the starting five plus one or two off the bench are the "go to" player which makes it hard for the other team to key off anyone. This year it looks like the Jacks may have 15 go to players with more experience in game situations for the freshmen. In the Wayne St. game every one but two scored. Allison Anderson was one of the players, she only shot once but caused a lot of turnovers with aggressive play in the backcourt.

Actually, Allison was the only one that didn't score....but she, like you stated, brings a lot to the table defensively and speed wise. It'll be interesting to see if Paluch gets any minutes at the point this year, provided she doesn't redshirt.

I think Allison is under rated as to how big of a part she can play on this team. She can bring the ball up and pass like no other and cause the other team to turn it over with her defense. She does not really have to score on this team.
