  • Next Year

When everyone is done going over last nights game I would like some conversation on next year's team.

    Where are we ok?

What do we need to work on?

Who is the starting five? Who steps up to replace Wark? Does Young crack the starting lineup or continue to provide outstanding relief off the bench?

Without completely throwing this game out the window, I think it is time to take some advice from the football coaches and "Play in the present".

    Re: Next Year

First things first and I hope we got a contract for AJ to sign like right now. Hopefully there are incentives sufficient for him to stay. The publicty from the NCAA big dance cuts both ways, and more people now know AJ than before the tourney started.

Even with the worst case scenerio of AJ moving on, I think there a ton of coaches who would be interested in SDSU.

As far as the team, I think the recruiting has not fallen off. We will need some time but with the playing rotation that has been place, being a starter is not that big of a deal if you get 25 to 30 playing minutes and I think Muck handled the demotion very well. I think the others on the team would have handled it the same way. Who knows someone maybe available to push Macie to the bench, but that would be a tough thing to do.

I think we will be a contender in the Summit. Win it all, I hope so, but maybe not.

Who you think could take the league crown from us in 2010? Oakland loses 2 of their top three scorers. NDSU, ORU? When you look at what we have coming back, and AJ's system; if all the pieces fit together and someone steps up to take Wark's leadership role we could be looking at another 25 - 30 win season.

        Re: Next Year

We'll miss Jenn the most. Consistent scorer and player inside and out for four years.

Muck replacement is already here with VJ.

        Allison will play more.

The young freshmen....Pauluch and Heiser are each excellent perimeter defenders as well.

The Bigs are going to need to step up, you just don't replace someone with Jenn's, or Stacie for that matter, their versatility, and ability to play inside and out.

That said, I think the team will be fine.

The key will be finding someone to play the high post position that Jenn and Stacie did so well. They really worked well with Maria in the low post.It needs to be someone who has a good outside shot and can also take it strong to the basket. It seems like most of the bigger players on the bench are more low-post type players. It sounds like Dietel from Minnesota might be a Wark-type player.

I think Dietel steps into Warkenthien's shoes.

              Re: Next Year

              Here is what I think:

First one listed is the starter!

5- Sunnaborg ----starts and move Boever to the 4 where Jenn was at --- Westergaard

4- Boever ---- with Dietel and Cornerman sharing the load

3- Cornerman ---- with Rotert, Schuttuloffel gets more minutes

2- Rotert -----Jill Young, remeber it is not who starts games but who finishes. ( Rotert is the most athletic player we have)

              1- Macie ----- Anderson

Now look that is already a ten player rotation! We still have not mentioned Venessa Johnson had a tough year and prbably should have redshirted, and all the Freshman coming in. We need to start redshirting some of these girls, because next year we will have a couple players that are going to push the 30-32 minutes per game mark (Boever, Cornerman, Rotert).

Sonnaborg starting at the 5 may suprise some, but she is physical, strong, and has very good feet and with a full summer with the team and getting into that first rotation she will make huge strides.

IMO take it for what it is worth!

After reading a few of the above comments I thought it was time to look back at what we were saying last year at this time. We were losing a couple of starters, we had no idea how far Jen W and others would advance, and those who thought we might get a low (5-8) seed were strongly questioned. We all know what happened. I don't know who will step up next year to be the leader or how fast the new recruits will develop, but I would have to think that we are in as good of a shape 7 months in advance of the next season as we were last year. In fact, I would have to say the prospects may look even better. See the link below for last year's corresponding discussion.

I think you're right. From what I saw on video, she's capable of being the same kind of player as Wark. Not going to happen overnight, but Dietel is a good one.

I'm curious to see how Sunnaborg and Westergard are able to work into the lineup. Imagine the high-low post possibilities there with a 6'2" and 6'3" in at the same time. Add Boever (6'1") in there, and you've got a nice group of inside players. And, oh yeah, we've got three other very talented freshmen coming in.

I don't think there's any doubt we'll be the Summit League favorites again. I think the league has learned not to bet against us. We're going to miss those seniors dearly, but then again, we missed Megan Vogel, too, and new players stepped up and made us better. Different, but better.

If anything, we'll be even deeper next year, with more options to go to in order to find a working combination in any given game.
                      Holy nutmeg!

AJ will play the five best players, if that's a freshman, so be it.

If it's a sophomore, so be it.

I do think Sunnaborg is possibly "penciled in" as the starter, but if Dietel shows up and Wows...it'll be her and Maria inside.

We ask this same question every year. How are we going to replace Shannon Schlagel? Melissa Pater? Brenda Davis? Megan Vogel? Jennifer Warkenthien?

AJ has this team set up with great balance across the classes and another great set of recruits coming in. No doubt that the 4 seniors will be greatly missed, but players will step up and get it done.

There are 3 juniors in Boever, Anderson, and Cornemann who will step up and take over leadership and young players in Westergaard, Sunnarborg, and the 5 freshman who will come in and fill the void and pick up minutes.

As we move up the national ranks the incoming recruits should be moving up in talent as well (as I think they have the last couple seasons). I think everything will be just fine next year, AJ has done a great job of a building a consistent program to make sure this wasn't a one year wonder.
