                    Re: March Madness Articles

I saw the telecast live and it was my impression the announcer was paraphrasing Jordan's e-mail. We do not know for a fact that he read the e-mail word-for-word.

They are the Jackrabbits not the Lady Jacks but at least we're getting talked about!

Not sure if this is the Sports Illustrated coverage we were hearing about last week, but it is from SI.com and is includes lots of info about the Jackrabbits. Raleigh regional recap with some more positive press for the SDSU Women.

                          Re: March Madness Articles

According to updated NCAA tournament simulation models originally developed by Wayne Winston, the UCONN women's and men's basketball teams have 71% and 12% chances of winning their respective tournaments.

The models are based on Monte Carlo simulations in Microsoft Excel, using the latest Sagarin ratings with a standard deviation of 7. The men's and women's simulations were each run 10,000 times; the results are summarized below.

These results come with the caveat that there are many ways to analyze the NCAA tournament, and, of course, no simulation model is perfect.

I did send an e-mail to one of the Sioux Falls TV stations Monday night. The response? That it's probably a nickname given by sportscasters, similar to "The Boys" for the Cowboys, the "G-Men" for Giants and "The Bolts" for the Chargers ... that it's just another way of identifying our team with no disrespect intended. Okaaaaay ... And no indication that they would stop using that other name.

You'd think the local media especially would want to get it right! I remember when journalists actually strived for accuracy and did something called "research" when writing stories. And I remember my newswriting and reporting instructor at State, Bill McCorkle, standing in front of the class, pounding on his podium: "ACCURACY! ACCURACY! ACCURACY!". He drilled it into us as if there was nothing more important. And there isn't IMHO.

I wish Jason or Ryan would send a memo to the media on their mailing list, and include an item in the game notes for the tournament, emphasizing our acceptable nicknames and what is not acceptable.

Sorry for the thread drift. As you were ...

                              0.01%.... So you're saying there's a chance!
