Does anyone remember the argument against going D-1 that revolved around the small town kids wouldn't get a chance to play at State?

I think I'll email the story to Sen. Kloucek to remind him of his silly argument.

Overview:

Mel grew up in Lake Norden, SD. When Jen lived in Lake Norden, she lived next to Mel's brother Rusty. Rusty is a SDSU grad and booster. Nice article, made me tear up.

Rusty still lives in Lake Norden and runs the family feed business. He is also the current Chair of the Alumni Association Board of Directors.

After reading the online version, I purchased the USD Today. Go out and buy one! The story occupies a significant part of page 1 and the top half of page 2 (another picture on page 2).

gorabbits posted this article on the Coyote board this morning, and I read it. What a fantastic story. It even gave me goosebumps. I made the comment on our board, and will make it here....that is what makes college athletics so awesome. There aren't enough stories written like this.

I don't know the young lady the article is about, but I just became a fan of hers. Good for her, absolutely outstanding.

And what an awesome end.......she is going to marry a Coyote.

Now that's what the NY Times story should have been. Mel Antonen is a great reporter and writer and really captured the essence of the SDSU family in that article. (Nice photos by SDSU journalism grad Greg Latza, too.)

If you don't choke up reading that story in the USA today or TV's article a few days ago you better get your medication adjusted. It is absolutely awesome. I need to chose my words wisely here as to not affend anyone - as the passing of Jenns parents is extremely sad. That said, the positive visibility that seniors Jenn, Stacie, Morgan, Ashlea and teammates have brought to SDSU is something you simply cannot purchase. The contributions these women have made to SDSU athletics and SDSU in general is beyound anyones wildest imagination. We should start first with their efforts in the classroom. Three years running they have lead the NATION is GPA. Their success on the basketball floor, the contributions to our community. Not to mention that they are NICE people. I hope some national sport show or talk show picks this article up and runs with it.

SDSU you are very fortunate to have these special people at your school. Ladies I thank you all for what you have done for all of Brookings.

Thinking big and living full has nothing to do with the size of the town in you. Mel has a gift of seeing big stories in his back yard; he worked hard on this and had just the right touch.

Also a great kid from a great family who wanted to be a Jackrabbit like his dad. It didn't work out for us in the end and he had a great career at USD. We'll never know what could have been had he accepted a scholarship offer from SDSU but I can't help but think he would have been just as good an addition. I'm pretty certain we would have picked up an extra 500-1000 fans from the DeSmet area. Best of luck to both of them, although I doubt they'll need any luck.
