Crowd to fill arena for WNIT contest

By Adrian Martin, The Brookings Register

The South Dakota State women's basketball team is living a fairytale and its supportive college town is along for the ride.

The vibe can be felt from Main Avenue to the Swiftel Center, as the Jackrabbits

(24-5) host their third-round Women's National Invitation Tournament game against Indiana today at 7 p.m.

A record 5,719 fans piled into Frost Arena for the women's second-round, 61-48 victory over Illinois State on Saturday, and a similar crowd is expected tonight.

SDSU Sports Information Director Jason Hove said full ticket sales for the game against Indiana began at 1 p.m. Monday and were sold out by 5 p.m.

"To get to that point where we have a sellout, it's not just the Brookings people coming, this is going to be a crowd from all over the state," SDSU coach Aaron Johnston said. "I think it's really neat to see how people from all over have really embraced the team and embraced this tournament."

The Jacks have been unstoppable down the stretch, winning their past 13 games. The Hoosiers (19-13) have struggled, particularly on the road, having dropped seven of their past eight games away from Bloomington, Ind.

Both teams have played four games against three common opponents this season: Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne, Southern Illinois and Minnesota. SDSU won all four games, and the Hoosiers won three and dropped the fourth at Minnesota, 79-69, on Feb. 11.

Indiana received a first-round bye in the WNIT and hosted in the second round, scraping out a win against Iona (N.Y.), 74-71.

"We've won a lot more games than are in the stat book," Indiana first-year coach Felisha Legette-Jack said. "Everything we do, we learn lessons from and we're not going to change anything."

SDSU edges Indiana in nearly every offensive category. But despite their small team size - only seven players remain from a roster of 11 at the start of the season - the Hoosiers possess a formidable starting rotation and have four players that average double digits in scoring.

"We just like to have fun out there," Legette-Jack said about her team's offense. "There's no secret, we're just going to play the best we know how. We're not going to surrender to any team."  .  .  .  (read more)

I've got one for sale!  My wife had to go on a business trip, and I had made two for the Illinois State game for us. Of course I have to keep the one, but probably won't go two-fisted to the game!! GO JACKS!!!!
what did you make the cowbell out of?
Sorry, just got back to the board. Styrofoam, wrapped in aluminum foil and spraypainted with a metallic gold spray-on paint. Real enough looking to have surprised the crowd anyway!!
Oh yeh, also already have a warm body in the seat...son-in-law who is a Jackrabbit as well.

Stoped at my parents house in Marshall on the way to Brookings and found another article in the Independent...

D-I SDSU Jackrabbits host Indiana tonight in Women’s NIT

        By Wayne Cook

BROOKINGS, S.D. — Who needs to drive 2 1/2 hours to the Twin Cities to see Division I women’s college basketball? It’s right here in our backyard — in Brookings, S.D., which is one hour from Marshall.

South Dakota State is playing in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). The field consists of 48 teams. . . (Read More)

When the IU women’s basketball team enters South Dakota State’s Frost Arena tonight, a different type of crowd awaits them.

Nearly one-third the population of Brookings, S.D. will be in attendance when the Hoosiers (19-13) play in front of a sold-out crowd of 6,000 in the quarterfinal of the WNIT. On Monday, the Hoosiers advanced out of the second round of the tournament with a last minute 74-71 win against Iona. Tonight they will take on South Dakota State (24-5) for the first time in IU history, competing against a team that has won its last 13 games

One part of this team that goes totally underrated is how well they play defense against the post. Every team seems to think they can take advantage of size in the middle and it never seems to work.

On another note, the one thing that scares me about Indiana is they have created an us against the world mentality with their 7 players and their coach. If they get on a roll it could be way to interesting for me to take late in the game.

My main concern is IU's "amoeba" defense, a matchup zone. Those kinds of odd defenses, the kind you don't see very often, can sometimes slow a team down until they figure out how to solve it.

Need to move the ball well and get hot from the 3 pt line. If we're hitting those shots, we'll run away with it. If not, it'll be close either way.

About 25 students are already in line outside Frost. IU's head coach came outside for a moment and thanked the students for their support of women's basketball.

What time do the doors open? 5:30 again, or 6? I heard 6 from a friend but thought it was the same time as last game.
