    Re: Indiana - Game Thread

"rez ball" is a very up tempo fast paced run up and down the court type offense. i grew up on one of SD's great reservations, and if you have never witnessed a game involving a reservation school you'll know what i mean. it would basically be the complete opposite of the way our men play.

        In my humble opnion....(or IMHO):

        1. The crowd will be a non factor, as far as them getting nervous. These girls are Big Ten recruits...they come from big programs, who play in front of big crowds (on the road), and are big time. Now, the noise getting to them and their play calling is another story...

        2. 6-4, 6-5, 6-whatever in the post means nothing... They have got to be a 6-5 "you know what" in the post (picture the young lady from Marquette, who I know was only 6-2 but she was solid) and you have some match-up problems for our ladies. (The young lady from Illinois State was 6-5 but played 15 plus feet from the hoop)

        3. If we can hold them to a mediocre percentage from the floor early on, and then transition those stops into fast break opportunities, their bigs will be a non-factor...in other words, they will look like any other post we have faced and beaten handily. No defensive stops = slow down game = their bigs posting up all day on the block = close match-up.

We do those things well and we win by 16 (Just like we have for the past 13 straight making it look easy). If not, nailbiter.

        Just my thoughts....

          SDSU has a fever
And the only prescription for WNIT mania is sellouts, excitement

BROOKINGS - Rejection is not a foreign concept in the Women's National Invitation Tournament. But it usually means some proud program has declined a bid, not that fans have been turned away at the box office, as was the case Monday in Brookings.

What is going on at South Dakota State - establishing a program record for attendance Saturday and selling out Thursday's follow-up in four hours - is not the norm for a tournament secondary to the NCAA.

"Think about where women's basketball has come in 10 years," Jackrabbits leading scorer and lone senior Megan Vogel said, "and we get to be a part of that."

The level of excitement and interest is comparable only to what sometimes takes place at major conference schools in late rounds, according to WNIT assistant director Renee Carlson.  .  .  .  (read more)

A story from the Aberdeen paper:

            http://www.aberdeennews.com/mld/aber...l/16944542.htm

Sisseton native part of SDSU team enjoying NIT success

            By American News Sports Staff

Courtney Grimsrud worked hard to earn academic and athletic success during her days at Sisseton High School.

That journey of classroom and sports success continues at South Dakota State in Brookings for Grimsrud. The 6-foot-2 junior is a starter and tri-captain for the women's basketball team at SDSU, where she has a 3.95 grade point average in biology.

Grimsrud and the Jackrabbits (24-5) have advanced to the third round of the Division I Women's National Invitational Tournament after SDSU beat Illinois State 61-48 at Frost Arena in front of 5,719 fans Saturday. The Jacks will play the Indiana Hoosiers (19-13) at 7 p.m. Thursday in Brookings.

"The tickets went on sale at 1 (p.m. Monday) and the game was sold out by five," said Grimsrud. "The crowd was amazing Saturday night. It was loud and exciting in there. When your crowd is that big, it can intimidate the other team."

Grimsrud said she and her teammates were thrilled to make the WNIT 48-team field as well as getting a first-round bye and being able to host the first two games. Sixteen teams remain, with the quarterfinals this weekend (the SDSU-Indiana winner will play the Oregon-Wyoming winner). The semifinals will be next week and the championship game at 2 p.m. March 31.

"It has been an amazing experience so far," Grimsrud said. "Hopefully, we can keep it going." . . . (read more)

Vogel helps smooth SDSU's move to Divison I

              By Shane Frederick
              The Free Press

Megan Vogel says she isn’t inclined to cry very often, but she admitted that she choked up during one of her last basketball games at South Dakota State University.

It was the final home game of the regular season, and the Frost Arena fans broke into a chant to express their appreciation for the Jackrabbits’ lone senior.

“Thank you, Megan,” they sang over and over to the St. Peter native.

“It pretty much brought me to tears,” Vogel said. “It showed what great fans we have here and what a special experience this has been for me.” . . . (read more)

Looks like SDSU is getting a little press from the local media. That will be good for recruiting and not just for the women either. Getting media coverage is good for all recruiting and will help with enrollment.

One thing was missing from the Illinois State game and that was the chant prior to the Jacks taking the floor "WE WANT THE RABBITS" remininiscent of the big crowd postseason games like Cal Hayward. Hopefully we can get it going for the Indiana game! Would love to see the cheerleaders center court leading the chant!

The athletic department has tried to make the "We Want the Jacks" chant a regular pregame ritual, but the crowd has been mostly unenthusiastic about it, even though the chant is up on the video board.

"We Want The Rabbits" is the traditional chant. Somebody, somewhere either wants to change it, or didn't know that it was the tradition in the first place.

You've got to be kidding me!!! Biggest game at Frost Arena since 2003 and doors are only opening 1 hour before tip off. Doesn't take that long to set up and open up shop for a game. Give the fans an extra 30 minutes to really get wound up. I bet the facilities manager had something to do with this, didn't want to give anyone extra time to make a mess
