  • Listening to the game?

    Hi-

I'm not sure if this is the correct spot for this post or not, but I wanted to make a general comment as I just found this board.

I'm a recent graduate who is now out of state attending grad school. I had heard that the women were doing well once again this year, and although I am a somewhat "lapsed" fan, I wanted to check out one of their games. So I went to the website to find out what media is available for the game, and see the link to click on for "radio", and I thought fantastic, I'll listen while I'm digesting some turkey. So I click on it, and what do I get? SDSU asking me to PAY to listen to a game on the radio.

I don't want to sound like a jerk or anything, but that may be the single stupidest move I have ever seen an athletic department make. Why would anybody pay even a cent to LISTEN to a game over a crappy internet feed? I'm currently attending a big 10 school, and I can literally watch every single game of football, mens and womens bball, volleyball, hockey etc. for FREE. Could I afford to pay the school? Absolutely. But apparently the athletic department decided that they already have way too much support and don't need any more fans following their teams. I hope they're satisfied having me stay home when I get back for christmas instead of paying for a ticket to see the team...

Thats not to say that I expect the school to start their own television network, but they honestly can't afford to have a free internet radio feed? How much could that be? 20 or 30 thousand aka two schollies? I hate to say it, but if they can't afford that they shouldn't be expecting to compete with many D-I schools for the long term. The point of an athletic program is to ADVERTISE for the school, so as to bring in alumni giving to the school as a whole. Its not really an effective advertisement if you demand that the customer pays to receive the advertisement. Again, why in the world would I want to pay to listen to teams that, while the school is doing the best it can, will likely be mediocre long term in big time athletics? Why does SDSU think it can charge for content that the Big 10 schools don't? Content to out of state fans is non-existent.

This was just a move that was more than a little short sighted in my mind. Most people are not going to pay a fee to simply listen to a womens game unless they are already hardcore fans. If you want to grow your fanbase (aka make more money in the future) its pretty stupid to cut off all casual fans in order to milk your current fans. The phrase cut off your nose to spite your face comes to mind here...

Welcome Alum1 - If you want to be a dedicated fan, here's your chance to join in supporting the Jacks SUPER athletic program.

Trust me, this is a BETTER THAN Average internet feed. I challenge you to find another FCS or Summit league that gives MOST of their feeds away. They are well in the minority.

Dude. Didn't have to blast the guy so bad. He might be a little put off by having to pay because he didn't realize it, but there is no reason to tell him to go away. We are trying to build a following not drive people away.

Read that post again and look at all the shots he took at SDSU without any facts!

While I would have favored a more moderate response to this post...I will admit this part of it really rankled me. If this is an SDSU grad and a Jacks fan, I beg to differ on whether our women's team will be "mediocre long term in BIG TIME athletics".

But let me defer to a more "moderate" suggestion to alum1. Many of the people who buy the game coverage are from the school playing us (which works the other way too) and that is real income we need. But as a REAL Jackrabbit fan, you can buy a year's package for $99 to listen to all Jacks games and some televised coverage. Welcome to the family alum1, but believe me if you are so mad over the $5 charge for an audio of the game, that you will come back and not buy a ticket to see the "real" thing, I believe you are missing a real opportunity. Support your alma mater, and see outstanding basketball as well!

I agree. People don't complain about spending $10 to go to one game to see it live in person but then complain about spending $5 to listen or $10 to watch ALL of the games on the internet for an entire month, seems like a steal to me.

You gotta pay to listen to Iowa or Iowa State games. And I'm not sure what Big 10 school he goes to, but the Big 10 network, I believe, probably makes free Internet televised games very unlikely.

They are stealing, because if you live out of the area and can not get it over the radio you are left to use to internet, which the radio sites use to broadcast over the internet for free. I think this is more what he is thinking. Video coverage is fine to charge for but not being able to get the radio for free over the internet is a little unnessicary if you ask me. I live in the SF area just bought a new house and am in my final semester of school so its hard to justify spending money for radio coverage that should/use to be free. When I cant make it to the games I listen on the radio follow along with TV at the argus and on here. I understand that its improtant for revenue for the athletics but it does not make it any easier for young grads and those you dont have as much extra money floating around to be able to pay for radio coverage on the internet. A good example my dad works some evening and in the building they do not get good radio signals so to listen even though he is in SF he has to pay for radio coverage. Im not trying to get people worked up over this but the radio broadcast was great for those who could not be at the game. Now if you live out of the area you have to pay to listen to what was free? Your right it does kinda seem like they stole free internet radio broadcast.

I posted this on another thread, but thought it should go here as well.

Count me in as believing games originating from terrestrial radio broadcasts should be free if its going online. You get FM/AM radio for free over the air, so you technically can listen to the games for free if you live in range. Why should people listening online be discriminated against for wanting a free audio feed of the game?

I understand there is extra costs involved for putting the audio feed online, but the costs associated with that aren't that incredible and could be covered by sponsorships (the same way terrestrial radio coverage is paid for).

Now if you want to make people pay for the video feed, then I'm all for that.

Agree totally with the video feed. I wish i could afford the video parkage when i cant make games but mortgage and bills and such go out first. Plus I dont think i could convince the wife(a USD grad) that its a good investment. Dont worry we met in high school for family reasons she went there, anyway, I cant wait for the game thursday. Both teams start 1-0 in confrence will be a great start.

It's $5 stinking dollars per month. Buy one less latte or two less beers each month and you have it covered. Or maybe skip eating out for lunch and brown bag it one day. If someone can't find or justify $5 to follow their team online then maybe there are other issues to be looked at. It used to be free. Now it isn't. Get over it!!! It's a better product (well except for MBB) at a better level, it's called a premium for a reason.
