Hi-
I'm not sure if this is the correct spot for this post or not, but I wanted to make a general comment as I just found this board.
I'm a recent graduate who is now out of state attending grad school. I had heard that the women were doing well once again this year, and although I am a somewhat "lapsed" fan, I wanted to check out one of their games. So I went to the website to find out what media is available for the game, and see the link to click on for "radio", and I thought fantastic, I'll listen while I'm digesting some turkey. So I click on it, and what do I get? SDSU asking me to PAY to listen to a game on the radio.
I don't want to sound like a jerk or anything, but that may be the single stupidest move I have ever seen an athletic department make. Why would anybody pay even a cent to LISTEN to a game over a crappy internet feed? I'm currently attending a big 10 school, and I can literally watch every single game of football, mens and womens bball, volleyball, hockey etc. for FREE. Could I afford to pay the school? Absolutely. But apparently the athletic department decided that they already have way too much support and don't need any more fans following their teams. I hope they're satisfied having me stay home when I get back for christmas instead of paying for a ticket to see the team...
Thats not to say that I expect the school to start their own television network, but they honestly can't afford to have a free internet radio feed? How much could that be? 20 or 30 thousand aka two schollies? I hate to say it, but if they can't afford that they shouldn't be expecting to compete with many D-I schools for the long term. The point of an athletic program is to ADVERTISE for the school, so as to bring in alumni giving to the school as a whole. Its not really an effective advertisement if you demand that the customer pays to receive the advertisement. Again, why in the world would I want to pay to listen to teams that, while the school is doing the best it can, will likely be mediocre long term in big time athletics? Why does SDSU think it can charge for content that the Big 10 schools don't? Content to out of state fans is non-existent.
This was just a move that was more than a little short sighted in my mind. Most people are not going to pay a fee to simply listen to a womens game unless they are already hardcore fans. If you want to grow your fanbase (aka make more money in the future) its pretty stupid to cut off all casual fans in order to milk your current fans. The phrase cut off your nose to spite your face comes to mind here...
