It is unique how the injury only seems to be affecting the posts and forwards; none of the guards have had a foot injury (knock on wood). In fact, there are only two players (Grimsrud and Schuttloffel) out of seven who are listed solely as a forward or center and have not had foot problems.

It isn't the floor. This is the same floor we've had in Frost for a number of years. The new paint job isn't going to make a difference either. Cassaday's injury is his knee and that is why he's out for the year. I'm not sure about Sargent. I don't remember him having any problems.

I was thinking of how the floor was just refinished. I'm just throwing out ideas though.

I think it would be interesting to know how these "stress fractures" are being diagnosed. However, its really none of my business. I hope the women can get healthy so they can focus on school and basketball and not have to deal with injuries. A student athletes life is complicated enough.

What is the definition of a stress fracture? I had a friend have what I called a stress fracture, broke a bone in his foot.... and continued to play football with it said there was little to no pain.... I know the problem with stress fractures are that if you don't take care of them you can develop serious problems and have to have surgery to fix them I believe Joe K. had stress fracture problems in high school.... I just don't know what the deal is but I really don't think it is the shoes.....

From a foot specialist (the metatarsals or foot bones are where most stress fracture occur):

Stress fractures occur when "muscles become fatigued and are unable to absorb shock and repeated impacts. Over time the fatigued muscle transfers this stress to the bone, resulting in a small crack (a stress fracture)."

So, just like it sounds. Rest, rest and more rest is the proper treatment. My point, sometimes its hard to see them on x-rays. I have no doubt that our players have pain in their feet and that rest is good for that. Again, not sure its worth anyone's time to keep discussing this.

I don't know what means they are using to diagnose but I do know they are seeing the ortho so they aren't just being diagnosed by the training staff.

BROOKINGS - Ben Beran knows what it's like.

He remembers the competitiveness that is bred through shared affiliation. He remembers the challenges - and the benefits - that come along with facing the same players, the same schemes, the same officials. He remembers the rhythm that's created by playing on the same nights of the week in the same cities and staying in the same hotels.

The fifth-year forward appeared in South Dakota State's last game as a member of the North Central Conference in 2004 - the only active player that can say that - and tonight he'll be a part of the first Summit League contest in program history.

Those were 44 long months of conference homelessness. Independent ball just wasn't the same.

"It's a battle, but I think it's better because you know what's coming," Beran said of conference play. In three seasons as an NCAA Division I Independent, "there wasn't much consistency in who we were playing. It was just games and games and games."

SDSU INJURY UPDATE

The SDSU men lost two players this week, while the women could regain two. Jacks men’s coach Scott Nagy said scholarship freshman Josh Cassaday and walk-on Payton Tivis are likely out for the season with knee injuries. The 6-foot-6 Cassaday played in three games, while Tivis didn’t appear in any. Both are candidates for medical hard*ships, meaning they shouldn’t lose a season of eligibility.

Meanwhile, SDSU women’s coach Aaron Johnston said junior forward Jenn Warkenthien – the team’s top returning scorer and rebounder – and sophomore center Laura Nielsen have been practic*ing and might play this weekend. Both have been out since the preseason with foot injuries. Also, Johnston said that junior forward Stacie Oistad and sopho*more Ketty Cornemann – the team’s top two scorers this season – are not likely to return until after the new year because of foot injuries.

Unfortunately,the report on Ketty is probably right.Saw here at a Worthington High School girls game that she attended with Maria on Tuesday night.She still had a boot on,and definitely was favoring the foot.It did not look like she will be playing anytime soon.

I'm a little tired of reading about bad feet and/or shoes, so I think I will take your quote and drift this thread a little. I assume that Ketty and Maria were in Worthington to check out the Worthington girl's basketball team. I hear that they have a really good Sophmore on that team that is averaging about 20 points a game so far. She would look really good in a Jackrabbit uni. I hope Maria can convince her sister Gabby to join the Jackrabbit Nation. I know it is a little early, but I'm sure she is on AJ's radar. Any chance she would verbal this early if AJ were to offer?

Also can anyone confirm the rumor that Tara Heiser from Watertown has verballed? Just a rumor, I'm not trying to spread bad rumors, just wondering if anyone had heard.

I'm in Watertown and just asked my expert (wife is a high school teacher and knows Heiser well) and she has heard the rumor and thinks it is probable but nothing confirmed. (Translation: still rumor).

I know Tara's mom (Pam, a Stevenson from Hamlin who played at SDSU) and her dad Ron pretty well. If she is DI material she will be a Jackrabbit, at least that would be my take.
