Part of the reason for Burckhard struggling a bit is that she is playing more at the 4 on the perimeter as opposed to operating out of the post. AJ said post-game that they need to work on getting her more comfortable there, and I think she will be playing more at that spot as Meyer is going to be hard to keep off the floor as the season progresses. Posts usually take time to adjust, but she looked right at home against a very good team. Was really impressed by how well she used her left hand.

yes i agree with that, but it still seemed strange that she shot SO comfortably last year and so hesitantly last night. and i can guess at some reasons for that but i guess i will just say it will be interesting to see how it plays out

i am very curious, how much they will try to play that what i call 4 forward lineup (kallie is not really a forward but not totally a center either, the others all have some perimeter skills) when they get one or both of dru and paige back.

Brooklyn is and will be a stud I totally AGREE but Kallie also played very well last night and i do think one of those two will be on the floor a lot, which means more perimeter time for Paiton and/ or one of Paiton or Tori is off the floor a bit more. and i am not sure we can guess how the addition of the two PG impact the lineup and playing time

ultimately, this team is going to have a lot of options and could be very successful with EITHER a 4 forward lineup or a 4 guard lineup

I guess this is a very good problem to have! If Paige and or Dru come back and start to play well by December or so… I’m assuming Paiton goes back to the post. Then to have the options of bringing in Kallie and Brooklyn through the game has got to put a big smile on AJ. And Mesa is available also. Man…I can’t wait to have our two injured guards ready ASAP….if at all possible. Takes more pressure off of Myah also so she can be more comfortable doing her thing. At least the Fr guards are getting experience for any future games 1-2 months down the road let’s say if they then come off the bench

I agree, seems she was more open to me on her 3 pt shots last season. She was considered more of a post threat by opposing teams. She'll adjust I think to how much latitude opposing defenses will afford her.

it was definitely frustrating. i would say it was that way because, even though it was the first game, we know that some to all of these players are capable of much more.

i thought only Myah and Kallie and Brooklyn played well for most of the game. i love the way that Brooklyn goes after EVERY rebound. Timmer also does that, much like LT used to do. Timmer played hard but maybe not always smart, but her effort is great.

i thought our defense was really not up to par, especially in the second half. we did not handle screens well and gave up way too many really really open looks

Tori is becoming the WBB version of alex arians. she is content to let everyone else score, but last night we needed more activity from her on that end. she was really a non threat. and i have no idea what is/ was going on with Paiton's shooting. i am gonna guess maybe she has been having a tough stretch shooting in practice or something and is therefore hesitant. but she is DEFINITELY hesitant. last year when she shot 3s she just caught them and shot them like that was what she was supposed to do. yesterday she caught the ball and thought about it every time. zero rhythm!

maddie is not shooting with confidence either. i think she is doing almost everything else very well and she plays hard too, i really have no question about any of their effort! but for me i would take maddie and paiton and tell them that if i see you hesitate on your shot again i am pulling you straight out. i expect you to take those shots and your team needs you to take those shots time has proven that YOU ARE a good shooter so quit worrying about missing and your fg% or whatever you are thinking about and shoot the ball

i know we play a tough schedule and we dont want to dig holes but i would run some plays for both of them early in the next couple games and make sure they know they are expected to shoot the ball. i really do not want to see maddie go too long with this thinking about shooting thing!! she can OBVIOUSLY score. you cannot score almost 4000 points in HS if you dont have scoring talent!!

i really thought that was the big difference in this game. our D gave up too many GOOD looks especially from 3. and we did not shoot well from 3. has creighton ALWAYS guarded us this way? i do not remember them being SO physical previously, although i would guess playing in the big east they should be

but they really reminded me a lot of the way usd guards us. really kinda this whole just push and grab and bump them EVERY time and know the refs will never call all of it idea. that is always annoying and i did not think the refs were particularly good but i NEVER do

so you know, blah blah blah the other team was handsy and pushy and the refs werent good? whats new. those things seem to happen a lot. i dont see this team looking for excuses or using those as excuses. they did not play up to their standard and i expect they will figure it out and look much better

did you notice how much time we spent with Myah, Paiton, Tori, and one of Brooklyn or Kallie, plus one of Ellie, Maddie, or TImmer on the floor? i really liked that. i feel like being able to put that group on the floor could be useful but i wonder if it was something they WANT to do or it was just because of lacking 2 guards and maybe just feeling like they are using who they have??

but one thing about it that i think might need some work, IF they want to use it, when you have paiton and myah and kallie or brooklyn on the floor, you lose the advantage of Paiton being guarded by the center for the other team and being able to pull her out of the lane. along those lines, i am told that Brooklyn can shoot it VERY comfortably from the 3 pt line. she has shown ZERO inclination of that so far. she would have had at least one very good look last night but did not even consider it

i think these 3 freshman are and will be amazingly good!!! i think some of us are forgetting that paige made PLENTY of mistakes in the pre conference games last year also. i am NOT saying she was not good!!! she played great and she did a LOT of good things!!! but she also made plenty of mistakes. and obviously it took timmer most of the year until she REALLY took off and kind of found her top gears, so to speak. I think these two guards look excellent, but YES they do make some mistakes while they are trying to get their feet on the ground

i would say that you have to NOT give up wide open looks from 3. and if you give up a slip you trust that you get help from the helpside, but there is also a way to guard both without leaving someone wide open

regarding Paiton and her shot. i would say YES i definitely caught myself thinking, hey?? something about that does not look the same. was it for sure more arch? maybe? again i thought the first problem was being hesitant and not shooting in rhythm off of the catch. but i guess i was thinking more the release seemed different, which maybe results in a higher arch

and i do agree that the difference from the 3pt line was the difference in the game! and the things we have layed out are at least some of the culprits for the difference in 3s made

One thing I notice is that we finally had a top tier team to play that didn't have multiple girls over 6'5". The trade off was that they were super fast. I felt like we were a step behind most of the game. We held our own through the first half, but then their speed started opening up steals, swatting passes and led to wide open back door cuts. I would like to play them again before conference starts and see if we (freshman especially) have adjusted to their speed better. I would lay money on the Jacks in a repeat game.

i would say i am not sure about the speed thing??? i am pretty sure that TImmer is very fast and she was one that i saw being late to shooters. i am not saying that as a whole the jacks are particularly fast but i am not positive that the bluejays are either??? i guess if someone has info about the speed of some ot the individuals on either team they could chime in

i think their defense is obviously good, but i think the problems on offense had as much or MORE to do with us being a little stagnant and hesitant. the back door cuts had to do with poor execution of screen defense and helpside defense being late

another factor that nobody has mentioned yet, we just lost an ELITE ELITE perimeter defender with the graduation of Tylee. i know her shot and scoring could come and go a little, but i dont think she ever got the credit she deserved for being a game changing defender. i understand WHY sjerven won the DPOY awards. she put up more tangible stats to show her defensive impact, but i actually believe that Tylee impact was not signifcantly less. AJ talked about how good she was on defense OFTEN, but i think most of the fans never recognized how much she mattered on that end

i am more than confident that Jensen does not put up those numbers with Tylee. hopefully Timmer or one of the freshman can approach the level of defense that she gave us for the last 5 years. and I DO BELIEVE they can and will be good!! but she had at least a couple inches on any of them and was equally or more athletic. she is graduated and the past is the past. the players we have are GREAT and they are gonna be great in their own way!!! but tylee was a defensive freak and i would say she never got the appreciation she deserved

we will get a great look at how good she was in about a week and a half when we play UCLA. charisma osbourne is a total stud and in two games against the jacks last year she shot 4 of 13 and 3 of 16 from the floor. she scored 26 points total in two games. a number she approached many times in a single game. others also helped of course and LT was also a very good defender but tylee was definitely the biggest reason for her struggles and the struggle of top perimeter players in general

Agree about Tylee , long and athletic, she could move very, very well, looked almost effortless, kind of graceful. She was an elite, elite defender. One thing not mentioned she could leap just as effortless and she didn't leap unless it was necessary to gain a steal on a lob pass or block a shot, get a rebound or a put back shot. I guess that's being athletic, already said. Dare I mention we will have someone similar in stature and hopefully just as athletic coming up in 2024 in Katie Vasecka, along with quickness and speed and athleticism and shooting in our 5 recruits, but that's down the road a ways yet.

I expect playing against Lehigh will be less stressful for the team than right out of the gate taking on a well coached ranked team who just came off a very good performance knocking off two higher seeded teams in Iowa and Iowa St last season in the NCAA Tournament. We'll see how much they learned from playing against Creighton . Looking forward to watching this team get better and better.

100% expecting them to show great improvement from game one to game two. coaches are too good and returning players are WAY TOO GOOD and i suspect the new players are too good also, THEY WILL learn from every game

not that the men played perfectly tonight but they DEFINITELY looked night and day better and the team they beat tonight, i think is much better than Lehigh will be. i dont like to make predictions but i fully expect the girls to look VERY noticably improved on Friday

Watched part of it as well. No way to make comparisons between SDSU/USD until later in the season. With that said, outside of Larkins, USD has a lot of rebuilding to do which we all knew. Creighton didn’t play that well in the first quarter or it would’ve been even more lopsided. I do think our underclassmen are showing much more potential at this point but it’s early.
