Re: Who Will the next coach be?

If you would think a little bit some of the coaches mentions play a more half court game and you see what happened to Amy Ruly with that style. The new coach needs to play the same style as what we have had because that is what this team was built to do. If you want to see transfers just bring in a coach with a half court style. That would really tank ticket sales.

I think I needed to laugh a little and 2002Jack's suggestion did the trick.

Sorry, but I highly doubt Kanny is a contender. There's a reason she didn't last very long as Mankato. She wasn't doing her job as a recruiter (which was her job). She's a darn good HS coach though.

I think we need to set our sights a little higher than low-level college coaches and high school coaches. I don't have any suggestions, but would hope we could find someone a little more worthy. I agree that the new coach should have a similar philosophy to AJ's...up-tempo, intense defense, and shooting the 3.

Staying local..........someone who can recruit.......get local kids (which has been a successful formula so far)......how about Travis Traphagen current Augie Assistant.  Sure it's a stretch highing a DII assistant but you have to find someone willing to take a one year contract.  SDSU has had a great run since going DI.  It may be difficult to lure someone from a mid-high major program and would typically be an assistant coach ......not a head coach, unless it's someone who was recently fired.  The salary will be an issue getting a big name person here to replace AJ.  Sad day for womens hoops but like a Phoenix rising from the ashes (ok sorry couldn't resist the bad pun) SDSU's womens program will survive and have continued success.

I wonder if Fred Tibbetts would consider coaching again?

Or maybe his sun Nate Tibbetts if you pull him from the Skyforce.

Re: Who Will the next coach be?

There is most likely an assistant at one of the major programs in the Midwest that is interested and has the credentials. This is an opportunity for Dr. Oien to make his first major hire since we made the move to DI which is an important part of being a AD at any level especially in DI. This is a very attractive job with the state of the program in such great shape.

Assistant coach Melum invited to Green Bay

Word that women's basketball coach Aaron Johnston was leaving South Dakota State for Wisconsin-Green Bay hit especially hard Wednesday, because Green Bay's athletic department went about its search so stealthily, even conducting initial interviews off campus.

The Jackrabbits might not go that far, athletic director Fred Oien said. But the procedures will be different in making the first major coaching hire in the school's NCAA Division I era.

"I've had conversation with president (David) Chicoine that we're in a new era," Oien said. "Searches we did as a Division II institution are probably no longer appropriate if we're going to attract sitting coaches at an excellent program, no matter what division it is. I'm not sure we can go public through the search process as we've done before."

Oien expects to know more details about the process by next week.

As for related personnel moves, the contract of Laurie Melum, SDSU's full-time assistant on staff, will not be renewed, according to Oien, as it is school policy to allow incoming head coaches to have a say in filling out the staff. However, she would be welcome to apply for the head coaching vacancy.

Melum didn't return a phone message Wednesday night. But Johnston said he has extended her an opportunity to join him at UW-Green Bay, and that she has not made a decision.  .  .  .  (read more)

A very good question for which only speculative answers can be given. I had thought the search committee approach worked very well at the D2 level but as Dr. Oien has been quoted it may not work at the D1 level. I dont know how else you can get a good hire, but lets see how these other approaches work. I was taken by surpries by AJ departure, but wish him the best at Green Bay.

Re: Who Will the next coach be?

Jeez, I really hope Melum would at least get an opportunity to interview.

AJ has told me himself, that she has turned down D-II jobs to stay with the program.

I would hope that kind of loyalty would be rewarded.

However, I can certainly understand AJ inviting her along to be his "wing-man" again.
                        They work well together.

                        I'm stunned. Although I shouldn't be.

I like the idea of Coach Traphagen as the first assistant.  We know losing a coach to a bigger program is going to happen again if SDSU remains successful, and I think they need to have a really good assistant to take over just as NDSU did with it's men's program.  And in my opinion Coach Traphagen would be that guy.  If you've ever meet him, he's got AJ's persona all over him.  He's a great recruiter/salesperson.  Let's not kid ourselves, if your a D-I coach you better not only know your X's and O's, you better be able to "sell like hell".
Honestly, I wouldn't mind seeing him as the head coach right off the bat, but I do think they should look more "high profile" to see what's out there.

First of all, CONGRATS TO A GREAT COACH!!!! AJ, you will be missed. :'( :'( :'(

I expect that UW-GB will continue their Horizon dominant ways under your leadership.

Melum may be a very good choice. We have done well with the last internal promoted coach!

Likewise, I hope we are looking at the Big X, Big 12, and MoValley schools. FL Gulf Coast, starting to the A-Sun from D-II may have a coach who'd like to finish a transition, rather than make one. BTW FLGC finished 28-1? As runner-up in D-II. Western IL has had success in last several years. Likewise the SUNBELT and SEC had some very good teams and perhaps a coach there would be good for SDSU.

It would be a huge plum if we lure a long-time successful coach in D-I women's hoops. LSU's ex coach is probably available. ;D

SDSU has a GREAT WOMEN'S BB reputation, and hopefully, we'll find a good, if not great replacement.

Re: Who Will the next coach be?

A lot of names thrown out on this thread already but I think we need to be looking on a much broader scale than some of these names. SDSU has a lot to offer to the next coach.

AJ got the job in a circumstance that doesn't happen very often. Frankly, he caught a huge break and to his credit he made the absolute most of it.

What I would love to see is another young coach that is out of a similar mold to AJ! SDSU is on the map now in women's basketball and they are supported very well here! We will get a large number of very qualified candidates that apply. Someone from the area may very well end up with the job but we will no doubt attract some strong candidates.

Fred has a history with hiring younger candidates and it has served SDSU well (Nagy, AJ, Stig, Bowman, etc.). I anticipate the same in this case.

Best of luck to AJ in Green Bay. Still thought I would be saying something more like good luck at Missouri, Colorado, Wisconsin, or Iowa State when AJ left instead of GREEN BAY! :-? :-? :-? :-? Maybe he's a die hard Packer fan.

Just got an unofficial notice that Melum is going with him. :-[

The rumor is that it was part of his negotiations. Smart man.

                                So, I have no ideas....
