  • Women's Basketball

I took a spin around some of the women's basketball web sites and it looks like the first of the preseason rankings should come out by the 15th. Good luck to our Defending National Champions as they get ready for the upcoming season!

    Go Jacks!

    Re: Women's Basketball

I will get a chance to see both SDSU at the University of Iowa and USD at Iowa State within the next month or so. It will be interesting to see how each team looks early in the season. Hopefully the Jacks can give a decent showing. I think it is good for them to play a game each year against a major opponent.

The Women give it a great effort, but come up short in an exhibition loss to Colorado. Sounds like 6' 5" Tera Bjorklund was a handful.

          Colorado downs Jackrabbits
BOULDER, Colo. -- All-America candidate Tera Bjorklund scored a game-high 30 points and added 10 rebounds to lead Colorado to an 82-66 victory over South Dakota State in exhibition women's basketball Friday night.

The two traded baskets in the early minutes, with the Jackrabbits holding several early leads, the last which came at 22-20 on a three-pointer by Megan Vogel midway through the first half.

Colorado took advantage of early SDSU foul trouble at the post position as Bjorklund, a 6-5 center, scored six straight points to put the Buffaloes up 26-22. Bjorklund, also dished out seven assists and blocked three shots before fouling out after playing 34 minutes in the contest.

After trailing 48-40 at halftime, SDSU cut the deficit to four as Shannon Schlagel scored the first four points of the second half.

Colorado, ranked 20th in NCAA Division I, widened its lead before Vogel closed the gap to 67-60 by making one of two free throws with 6:54 remaining. However, the Jackrabbits, the top-ranked team in NCAA Division II, would get no closer as Colorado went on an 11-1 run over the next three minutes after Schlagel fouled out.

Vogel, a freshman from St. Peter, Minn., led SDSU with 21 points in a starting role. Brenda Davis contributed 14 points and Schlagel added 10.

The Jackrabbits ended the night 22-of-60 from the field, 36.7 percent, including an 8-of-20 effort, 40 percent, from behind the three-point line. SDSU was 14-of-22 at the free throw line, 63.6 percent.

Colorado, which forced 23 Jackrabbit turnovers, held a 43-36 rebounding advantage. Randie Wirt pulled down nine boards for the Buffaloes, while sophomore center Christina Gilbert led SDSU with nine rebounds in a reserve role.

From the field, the Buffaloes finished the game 29-of-60, 48.3 percent, including a 3-of-11 performance, 27.3 percent, from beyond the arc. CU converted 21-of-28 free throw attempts, 75 percent.

The Jackrabbits continue the exhibition season Thursday at the University of Iowa. Start time is 7 p.m. at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Way to go Yotes... Loosing to Drury College ! Its a good thing they have Mandy Koupal or they would be back at the botton of the conference. I'm sure after she graduates they will takeover their rightful place in last again.

                    Texas Jack:
I guess a person cant be in two places at once, I love to be in St Joe since its a close trip, but I hope to be in Bakersfield Ca as I am thinking our men will do it this year with or without Cerveny. ;D. Old knobby seems to get hurt just by putting his jock strap on.

There is something I noticed about the coaches poll that got my speculation going. SDSU got six first place votes 1 second and one 4th finish to get 60 points.

USD and NDSU both got one first place vote.  This is a secret ballot , but you really wonder who voted for USD? My guess it was Chad Lavin, the coach and he is probably the person who gave SDSU our 4th place vote.

I dont have any problem with Amy Ruley voting for her own team which she may have  sooner or later that height working in their favor.  A year ago, I was walking in the Wellness Center at Frost when the Bison squad came in to shot their baskets prior to the Sat eve game.  The squad filed past me and I was awed how I  had to look up in order to look them in the eye.  They have some talented young tall ladies.

If these scenerio's are correct, it would appear that Aaron Johnston voted for his own team too.

The coaches by their voting appear to be using the poll to get their team spirit going.  Nothing wrong with that as basketball although very physical in terms of fundementals, it also has a big mental role that makes and breaks good teams.

Good luck Jacks and make us proud again this year with another NC.

                      SDSUFan,
I too thought of that potential conflict, Centenial Gardens (Bakersfield) or Civic Arena (St. Joe). I am just glad that both teams are good enough for us to ponder that potential situation ;D
I will go to Bakersfield if I have to drag myself across the desert to get there, My parents went to St. Joe last year so they will represent the family at that event -should it happen.
What is "Knobbys" ( I love that knickname) status?
from what I last heard it was a mild ankle sprain. I think a lot of his problem is size, most 6-8 290 lb. guys will break down frequently when they play as physical as he does. (joints and bones were never designed to carry that load) but lets hope he stays healthy because he will be needed throughout the season.

I saw Cervaney in Orlando and he could have played, but think it was a wise choice to hold him out until next weekend in Mankato. The word was he was going to play in the Northern Ky. game and they could have used him in the first half as they had some very physical players that Cervaney could have banged around pretty good. I will be in Bakersfield as well. As much as I have grown to appreciate and enjoy the womens game I hands down prefer the mens game. I empatically believe we have the players to get to Bakersfield. I can't wait for the rest of you to see this years version of the Jacks. Calvin Melaney has slimmed down and looks much more confident.

                          Re: Women's Basketball

I have heard nothing about Josh Cerveny status other than what Steve Emming mentioned in the weekend broad cast. They expected him to play Sunday, but he apparently was not ready from a physical standpoint.

I dont think Knobby is his offical nickname, but I recall from the UNO game in Omaha a year ago, Josh was playing with a hand cast and he had trouble hanging on to the ball. The UNO fans kept yelling "Give the ball to Knobby" and thats how I picked up on the nickname.

Yes you right with a big body like that, he can be injury prone.

To get back on topic, I have heard little about Sorita DeBoer who was out most of last season. She has shown what she can do at post and was a great back up for Pater. Now with Gilbert and Vogel filling in at that post along with DeBoer, we should be able rotate the inside quiet a bit this year.

                            Re: Women's Basketball

Found on the SDSU Athletics web site:

                            Jackrabbit women sign four
BROOKINGS, S.D. -- Four high school standouts have signed national letters of intent indicating they will enroll at South Dakota State University next fall and compete for the national champion Jackrabbit women's basketball program.

Signing tenders Wednesday, the first day of the fall signing period, were:

                            • Courtney Grimsrud, Sisseton, S.D, Sisseton High School;
                            • Angie Hugoson, Granada, Minn., Fairmont High School;
                            • Isha (pronounced EYE-sha) Vanterpool, Huron, S.D., Huron High School; and
                            • Andrea Verdegan, Glen Flora, Wis., Flambeau High School.

Grimsrud, a 6-2 center, enters her senior season at Sisseton High School as the career school-record holder in points, field goal percentage, free throw percentage, rebounds and blocked shots. She has scored 1,380 points and grabbed 928 rebounds for averages of 19.2 points and 12.9 rebounds per game for her career, to go along with 449 blocked shots, an average of 6.2 per game. A starter since the eighth grade, Grimsrud was a first-team all-state selection in 2001 and 2003, and earned second-team honors in 2000. She also is a two-time placewinner in the discus at the Class A state track and field meet.

Hugoson, a 5-11 forward, is a three-time all-South Central Conference selection at Fairmont High School. She has led the Cardinals in scoring each of her three seasons in the starting lineup, including an average of 12.6 points per game during the 2002-03 season. Hugoson also led the team in rebounding, steals and assists, while setting a single-season school record with 34 three-pointers.

Vanterpool, a 5-7 guard, earned all-Eastern South Dakota and Class AA all-state honors at Huron High School after averaging 15 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals per game, while shooting 42 percent from three-point range. She also is a member of a record-setting 4x100-meter relay team and is the two-time defending ESD champion in the long jump, earning state runner-up honors in the long jump at the Class AA state track and field meet as a sophomore. Vanterpool will join former Huron standouts Sarita DeBoer and Heather Sieler on the Jackrabbit squad next season.

Verdegan, a 5-8 guard, earned all-state honors at Flambeau High School in Tony, Wis., after averaging 16 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game as a junior. A two-time all-conference selection in both basketball and volleyball, she also has competed at the state track and field meet in the 4x100-meter relay and hurdle events.

The recruiting class will be the first in the Division I era of Jackrabbit athletics as SDSU moves up from NCAA Division II. The 2003-04 season is serving as an exploratory year before SDSU begins a four-year process toward Division I certification, which includes scheduling Division I opponents, in the 2004-05 academic year.

South Dakota State, a member of the North Central Conference, won the 2003 NCAA Division II women's basketball national championship. The Jackrabbits, coached by Aaron Johnston, compiled a school-record with 32 wins against just three losses in winning a share of the NCC title for the first time in school history and making its second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight.

SDSU closes out its exhibition season Thursday at the University of Iowa, then opens the regular season Sunday at home against Minnesota State, Moorhead, in a 4 p.m. matinee at Frost Arena.
                            "I think we'll be OK"
