Despite a furious second-half comeback and double-doubles from seniors Lindsay Thomas and Melissa Dennett, the Colorado State women's basketball team fell to South Dakota State 82-75 Friday night at Moby Arena on the first day of the Coors Rocky Mountain Invitational. Dennett finished as the leading scorer and rebounder in the game with 23 points and 13 boards for her 10th career double-double while Thomas' 12 points and 10 rebounds accounted for the 15th double-double of her career.
The Rams jumped out to an early lead over the Jackrabbits, staking to a 10-2 advantage just four minutes into the game. However, South Dakota State would tied the game at 10 with 14 minutes remaining in the half. With the Rams already trailing 22-16 at the 9:56 mark, the Jackrabbit defense held the Rams without a field goal for nearly seven minutes and took a 44-27 edge into the locker room at the half.
The bright spot for the Rams in the first half was the play of Dennett who tallied 11 points and nine rebounds at the half.
The second half, however was a different story as the Rams outscored the Jackrabbits 48-38 in the period. The Rams opened up the half on an 8-3 run to cut the lead to 10, 47-37 with 17:08 remaining in the game. The two teams battled back and forth, and with 11 minutes remaining in the game, the Rams trailed 59-48.
Sophomore Sara Hunter then hit back-to-back three pointers to cut the lead to five, 59-54 and a Molly Nohr jumper with 8:15 in the game brought the Rams to within three points. The game remained close down the stretch, after an acrobatic jump shot by senior Vanessa Espinoza 31 seconds left made the score 77-75. The Jackrabbits sealed the victory from the fee throw line, hitting five of their final six free throws to put the game away.
