Ram Women Fall Short Against South Dakota State

Despite A Second Half Comeback, Rams Fall 82-75

Despite a furious second-half comeback and double-doubles from seniors Lindsay Thomas and Melissa Dennett, the Colorado State women's basketball team fell to South Dakota State 82-75 Friday night at Moby Arena on the first day of the Coors Rocky Mountain Invitational. Dennett finished as the leading scorer and rebounder in the game with 23 points and 13 boards for her 10th career double-double while Thomas' 12 points and 10 rebounds accounted for the 15th double-double of her career.

The Rams jumped out to an early lead over the Jackrabbits, staking to a 10-2 advantage just four minutes into the game. However, South Dakota State would tied the game at 10 with 14 minutes remaining in the half. With the Rams already trailing 22-16 at the 9:56 mark, the Jackrabbit defense held the Rams without a field goal for nearly seven minutes and took a 44-27 edge into the locker room at the half.

The bright spot for the Rams in the first half was the play of Dennett who tallied 11 points and nine rebounds at the half.

The second half, however was a different story as the Rams outscored the Jackrabbits 48-38 in the period. The Rams opened up the half on an 8-3 run to cut the lead to 10, 47-37 with 17:08 remaining in the game. The two teams battled back and forth, and with 11 minutes remaining in the game, the Rams trailed 59-48.

Sophomore Sara Hunter then hit back-to-back three pointers to cut the lead to five, 59-54 and a Molly Nohr jumper with 8:15 in the game brought the Rams to within three points. The game remained close down the stretch, after an acrobatic jump shot by senior Vanessa Espinoza 31 seconds left made the score 77-75. The Jackrabbits sealed the victory from the fee throw line, hitting five of their final six free throws to put the game away.

Good win for the program. This must be another "head turner" in the Sioux Falls area. In a short period of time, the Jacks destroyed Nebraska and beat the Lindsay Thomas lead CSU Rams on their home court.

I don't think it is much of a head turner here, most everyone knows that SDSU has a very good women's BB program.

I don't know. The NCAA bought the men's NIT earlier this year. I'm assuming they also bought the Women's NIT.

According to the NCAA's NIT purchase announcement, the WNIT is not part of the deal, so it's still independent of the NCAA.

I'm not sure anything the SDSU Women's Basketball team does anymore is a surprise to the Sioux Falls Market or anywhere else in the state or region. We had a solid program in DII with very good players and we hit the ground running last year in our inaugural season of DI. We continue to get good players because recruits want to be play for Aaron and be associated with an up and coming winning DI program. Our women's program not surprising is leading the charge to DI success and the other programs will continue to get there. I think a NIT bid in just our second year is real possibility and hopefully we will be Nationally ranked if we continue to pile up the wins against good competition. I really think our scheduling will become an issue as teams learn how talented the Jacks are and they will not get an easy non-conference Win. I hope the fans show up "Big time" next weekend as these women deserve the support!

Much agree! The SDSU women's basketball program has earned big-time support from the fans and the community.

                      Go Rabbits!

Sioux Falls and her dad and uncles were great basketball players for Jim Marking's Jacks in the second half of the 60s and couple years into the 70s.

I don't know whether SDSU recruited her but I would assume so.

Yes the Jacks did recruit Lindsay. She indicated we were on the short list. We may have gotten her if we were DI at the time. Her teams at Roosevelt never lost a game in her 4 years and won 4 state championships.

The Jackrabbit women are awesome and it was a real treat to watch them beat Colorado State and UC-Irvine!
We did hit a dry spell in the second half against CSU, but the way the Jacks played in the closing minutes was the mark of a champion.
Remember: this is a young team and they will have some spurts. We lost four good seniors last year, but the freshmen are really contributing to the returners we have. Throughout most of the game, much of the time it is 3 of 5 who are freshmen or sophomores. Exciting future!
As for Coach Warden's comments that we would see a much improved Colorado State team on Saturday, I watched the game and while they finished strong, UC-Irvine kept it close through the first three quarters of the game.
Congratulations to Megan Vogel, the tourney MVP, to Ashlea Muckenhirn who was on the all-tourney team, and to the entire team for winning the tourney tournament!!!
