Lesson for all. At the DI level every game is a big game. Take a team for granted and you will lose. Young teams are more likely to do this than others. This team will learn. The NIT is still a long ways off. Anyone who expects a post season bid is still a long ways off of what is real. We are only in our second year of DI. Keep things in perspective.
We are here to add what we can to life, not get what we can from life. -Sir William Osler
We do not see things as they are, we see things as we are.
12/10/2005 http://gojacks.com/ Hot-shooting Salukis defeat Jacks CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois shot 60 percent or better in each half and rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit to defeat South Dakota State 75-59 in women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the SIU Arena.
The host Salukis improved to 4-3 overall, while SDSU dropped to 5-3.
SIU built a nine-point lead early in the game, only to see the Jackrabbits go on a 15-2 run late in the first half to go up 28-23. SDSU led 36-31 at the half.
In the second half, the Jackrabbits built a 10-point lead in the first three minutes. Andrea Verdegan hit a three-pointer to put the Jackrabbits up by eight and Christina Gilbert scored on a layup to run the score to 43-33 with 17:08 remaining.
Just as what happened in Thursday's game at Wisconsin, the Jackrabbits hit a second-half dry spell. This time they couldn't recover as SIU outscored the Jackrabbits 24-3 over the next 10 minutes to go up 57-46 and put the game out of reach.
Carlai Moore scored a game-high 23 points on 11-of-13 shooting from the field to lead three SIU players in double figures. The starting backcourt tandem of Jayme Sweere and Erin Pauk added 15 and 12 points, respectively.
For SDSU, Gilbert led the way offensively with a career-high 21 points. Andrea Verdegan tallied 11 points as she made 3-of-5 three-point attempts. Leading scorer Megan Vogel, who came in averaging better than 14 points per game, was held to three points.
Southern Illinois finished the game shooting 60.4 percent from the floor, 32-of-53, but did not make a three-point basket in only three attempts. At the line, the Salukis converted 11-of-18 attempts, 61.1 percent.
The Jackrabbits, meanwhile, made 23-of-60 field goal tries, 38.3 percent, including 5-of-20 on three-pointers. SDSU fell below 50 percent at the line, making 8-of-17 free throws for 47.1 percent.
The Salukis also won the battle of the boards, 39-30. Sweere led SIU with eight rebounds, while Gilbert and Jennifer Warkenthien each grabbed six for the Jackrabbits.
SDSU returns to home action Friday night, hosting Texas State. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Frost Arena. The Jackrabbits close out the weekend homestand Dec. 18 with a 2 p.m. game against Alabama.

It's obvious that our women Jacks did not play up to their level. An NIT invitation should be our expecttation of the women's team. Anything less is a disapointment. They are good enough to earn a spot in the NIT. I do not care how many years we've been D1. This loss is a letdown, simple as that. Our women's bball team has been far and away our best D1 team. I doubt any of them would use the, well its our second year excuse.
I hope our women's team has not gotten to the point that because they knocked off a couple of teams from major conferences this year (Nebraska and Wisconsin) that we can just show up and coast to a win. We are talented but not that talented as we have weaknesses like every team. These teams we are playing all have very athletic and gifted players and if we don't bring a hungry attitude and just go through the motions we will get beat like yesterday. i realize our depth is one of our strengths however I would love to see us shorten up the bench as it seems the constant rotations get us into trouble at times. I was not at the Middle Tenn State game but heard that might have been part of the problem in that game. I think this team has a realistic chance at NIT bid but has to continue to play that agressive style that got us some of those big wins last years and this year. It won't be any easier against Texas State and Alabama this weekend in Frost.

There seems to be a pattern starting with a couple wins then a loss. I hope we can put a long win streak together. If this does stay to form we could finish 17-9 at this rate which is not bad but could be better. Does show the traits of a young team.
