Re: Who is the best player in SDSU history?

Of course her team loved her, they were able to ride on her coat tails. She as an individual sure put up a lot of numbers but that doesn't mean she was a team player or good enough to win a national tittle. If she was the best player from our team yet ended up at U dot, why were they only able to beat us twice and im pretty sure she couldn't beat us in brookings or any tournaments, and frankly, thats when it counts and I don't recall seeing her being the dominating player she was during the season. Koupal was good, but not great and it seemed she was more for her own personal glory then helping the team.

Re: Who is the best player in SDSU history?

Mandy was a great high school and college basketball player who has accomplished a lot. USD was a much better fit for her as a student athlete. She wasn't the best player in SDSU history. She was one of the most talented players to ever where a SDSU jersey but that has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with being the best player in SDSU history. She should not be part of this discussion. No need to be hard on Mandy, she is a great person who I suspect has no regrets. Please, lets talk about true SDSU greats.

Yet your always hatin on SDSU it seems. Can you explain how you think Koupal was the best ever to put on a SDSU uniform? She played one season and was good as a freshman. Its all hearsay to what your think would be. If she would have played here all 4 years then we would have won 3 national championships right? What if she stayed and we didnt win any? Its a possiblity that way also, because she played a different game style then the rest of the team. She has to be the central figure of the team which may have taken away from the rest of the players on the team. She wasn't quick and didnt pass but she shot well and rebounded, but to me that doesn't sound like the greatest ever. I would say the greatest ever to wear an SDSU uniform would have to have done something that no other play or team has done before, and winning the national tittle puts Pater up there and the most likely chance we get into the WNIT would put Vogel in that top spot. She may have had a chance at being great here but we will never know. But we do know what Pater and Vogel did for us.

Megan Vogel hands down is the best in SDSU history. Yes the others mentioned did contribute a great deal. I can recall seeing how loyal fans Carlene Ross had in her parents. They never missed a beat and were always on hand. Rose no doubt could play basketball and has the stats to back them up. I seen her at recent games with her children and she is a model citizen and a parent. We can be very proud of her, but I hesitate to say she was the best in history. She is without a doubt one of the best.

Re: Who is the best player in SDSU history?

Fortunately, there is no objective way to measure the best player ever. Great athletes from the past (e.g. Pat Dobratz, 1971-74, led SDSU to four straight state AIAW -- Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women, NCAA still just thinking about adding women so women had the AIAW; SDSU Hall of Fame 1995) aren't remembered by, or are unknown to, many posters due to a simple reason: age.

I watched Dobratz (SF Lincoln product) her last two years at SDSU, and while the style of play was quite different in the 70s compared to today, I am convinced Dobratz would be a fabulous player today.

We can all have our favorite. I think my favorite would be selected from the following list: Schlagel, Pater and Vogel.

It's hard to say, Kurt,...we couldn't see such detail with kerosene lamps.

Dobratz was a couple years older than me. Four AIAW titles in a row. She was a great ball handler.

Re: Who is the best player in SDSU history?

I not much at comparing skills, and the problem in comparing our greats is that the game is constantly changing. In my mind I don't think there has been any player who could come to the floor with so much determination and body lanuage that was contagious to her teammates like Megan Vogel showed this year and during her entire career. If you only saw Megan on TV once or twice, you missed a great deal. She made the others on the team want to be winners. I would be one of the last people to say that Pater, Rose or Schagel were not leaders. They most certainly were leaders.

Skill-wise I think its hard to compare our great players because of the changes in the game that occur with each season. No doubt Pat Drobratz was awesome in her time, but the game has changed so much that it almost unfair to compare her with Megan. Three years from now I might have a different opinion about who the best player in SDSU history is. I think our future is bright for WBB at SDSU. More greats will be making their marks in the record books.

I have often felt Jim Sutton was one of the best in terms of the men. He seldom missed a free throw and still has a record for consectutive free throws. It was something to watch when a guy hit 80 fts in a row. The publicity in the late 1950's was not what it was now, but the fans were aware of the consecutive record Each subsequent ft becomes something to awe. I can not recall seeing the one that he missed that stopped the record.

Some where, some how, some young man is going to come along and break this FT record. Its a great thing to put points on the board when the clock is not running. I dont think for a second we can compare Jim Sutton to any current player, again because the game has changed so much.

She played for four years but just started 2 or 3. It is true her and AJ didn't get along very well.

I have a bit of a biased with Brende cuz we are pretty good friends. Pater would be up there with Davis too. The were a bunch of great players on the teams when I was there 1999-2003. It is hard to pick just one.

A lot of good arguments on here but a while since it has fired up. The whole board is getting more active which means that the school year is about ready to start.

Carleen and I have talked about this argument and she said that Vogel is the best. They are all great but when you consider the upgraded opponents that Megan saw in the D-1 level that is the tie breaker.

It will be great to have Megan on the coaching staff. If you've listened to any of her interviews, she sounds like a veteran coach already!

Carleen is a good friend and an underated player in SDSU history. A fierce, fierce competitor on the court and one of the nicest ladies off the court. She is still in Brookings and is married to Scott Holm who also palyed for the Jacks.

One thing I can add about Carleen. A few years after graduation she did and probably still doew work with the Student Athlete Council in doing the coat and toy drive during holidays. One year I gave a cash donation, more than what they had been receiving. Nancy Neiber thanked me many times, and she mentioned that Carleen working in social services helped make this a drive to help possible. No doubt Carleen is a real positive and class person. She is with out a doubt a great in SDSU women's basketball.

"Who's the best . . ." discussions remind me of arguments over what's the best flavor of ice cream.

There have been any number of very good women's basketball players at SDSU. I'm inclined to think that Vogel has been the best yet, but there's plenty of argument room for several others. For me what tips the scales in her favor is the level of competition that Megan faced, and her success at that higher level of competition.

SDSU has a long tradition of success in women's basketball back into the old AIAW days. I'm just glad that people like Vogel and the upperclassmen on this year's team are carrying that tradition into Division I.

A new question: Which player on our roster this year has the best shot at making the list of "best ever at SDSU"?
                            "I think we'll be OK"

I know when I play with Brende she goes easy on me. I am not saying she is really the best I just have a biased with her.

                                Career:
                                1. Shannon Schlagel
                                2. Megan Vogel
                                3. Melissa Pater

                                Season:
                                1. Carleen Rose (1992)
                                2. Melissa Pater (2003)
                                3. Laurie Kruse (1991)
Since Jimmie mentioned possible bias: I'm a friend of Laurie (Bruns) Kruse's older sister Cindy Mather, and Laurie and I knew each other through FCA when she was NCC Most Valuable Player. I started following Shannon's career when Clark almost beat my hometown in the semifinals of the 1999 state tournament, and I'm a friend of her high school teammate Andrea (Seefeldt) Begeman.

This probably belongs in the men's basketball forum, but Jim and my late father were good friends. I think the consecutive free throw record was actually only 32, but I read somewhere that Jim used to make 25-footers routinely, and he set the all-time college division record for free throw shooting as of 1957 at just over 92 percent. This all seems even more amazing to me considering the substantially lower quality of the basketballs in those days. (http://sdshof.com/athletes/detail.cfm?id=131)
