Re: GDT: Jackrabbits vs, The Irish

Was anyone actually expecting this game to be this close? I sure as hell wasn't. All I wanted was to see the Jacks compete and stay within 20. This is a very good loss. I think this will be one of the closest games for the Irish until they play UCONN and lose by 20 in the national championship game.

Regarding Muffet's comments right after the game: I don't see how it comes off as arrogant. She is a very strong ambassador of women's basketball. All she wanted was to say thank you for hosting us and supporting women's basketball at SDSU. Not very many schools do.

I thought it would get ugly as well. Even just watching the first possession, when we had difficulty even moving the ball. I'm assuming the crowd played a big role in keeping us from being intimidated.

Re: GDT: Jackrabbits vs, The Irish

Getting back to the game discussion, instead of other distractions. My thoughts.First, we looked like an ACC team out there today,or SEC according to Jimmy Dykes. We are playing at a high level.I only wish we played these tough OOC games at the end of our season instead of at the beginning of the season. ND (all P-5 conference teams really) play these hard fought ,intense ,fast paced, games with athletic ,quick players, some highly skilled too,ALL SEASON LONG.....it only makes them tougher and better to adapt to the riggers ,and challenges they'll face in the NCAA Tournament.

We on the other hand, playing against slower less athletic Summit teams actually regress as the year goes along. Not meant to denigrate the Summit League, but no one comes close to the competition level we experienced today. We don't do it (regress)consciously obviously, but game after game ,you find you don't have to play like we did today to win,so you start playing a little less ,gradually the team gets used to playing slower, less intense, etc, etc. This is a big disadvantage when you get to the NCAA's and all of a sudden, you have to transition to this type of play we experienced today. That's hard to do in the time frame we have to do it.

Obviously we have great players and could do it....but it'd be so much better if we stayed playing at this level.I hope this doesn't sound condescending toward the Summit, but it not only applies to the Jacks, but any Summit team that wins the conference tournament.I thought the same thing for when USD was the Summit rep and was thrown to Stanford. They played pretty good, but it was obvious they couldn't play well enough the whole game ,because they aren't conditioned to that like the Power 5 teams are. Some mid-majors can rise to the occasion once in awhile, but it's very hard and you have to have the players who can flip the switch and make the transition seamlessly.Especially true when you have to play NCAA Tournament teams that are seeded 1-4 ND is probably a one seed come March, for us to play them like we did today speaks volumes of how well we are playing currently.Long first thought,I don't think I'll go into #'s 2,3,4,5,6,etc......

Re: GDT: Jackrabbits vs, The Irish

We will get to see another ACC team in Pitt at the Virgin Island as well as #8 Maryland of the Big 10. Old Dominion of the Conference USA is the other game. If the Jackrabbits win 2 of 3, I would call that a big step forward for the year. We might be expected to lose to top 10 teams. I do not think that is being content as much as realistic. I still have "hopes" that we can see some victories over highly rated teams. I just do not think it is a time to go negative on the team for not taking down a Maryland or Notre Dame. It was very good beating Nebraska or Penn State, but I do not expect it to happen every time we play highly rated P5 teams. I am still expecting that we might upset DePaul when they wander into Frost though. AJ is trying to build a resume for the Jackrabbits again this year and at this point, I think we are doing a great job. Muffet's little chat with the fans at Frost might be considered a small rainbow for the effort and progress of this team. If you were there, you might have a different frame of reference than Zimmer. However, I don't give a negative to Zimmer for his first thoughts about the situation since he certainly can have his viewpoint from a detached location. There is a difference when you are there vs. responding in a detached frame of reference. PS...the students were even at the game till the very end!!! Also, my ND fan friends commented about the game environment. You had to be there.
Best to remember these are kids and they are doing everything they can to entertain us, be scholars, and all in all be great humans. Jackedforlife

Zimmer is the assigned beat writer to SDSU from the largest newspaper in South Dakota. In effect he is the face that opposing coaches and SID's see before and after games. His job is to report and not criticize what those coaches do or say. He was not at the game he did not see what happened at the game and therefor should have not editorialized on what he did not see. Graham Hays was impressed with the atmosphere and tweeted a video of the crowd and said that was what this sport is about. Like the ND SID said. McGraw has never done that in her 34 not 35 years of coaching as i said earlier. Some have said would she have done that if they lost I for one believe she would have. The Jacks played Notre Dame to one of the closets games they have played excluding the final four. Had a few more shots dropped in for the Jacks that could have been a win. The Jacks have won over more than a few opposing coaches and the atmosphere of Frost Arena and the fans and the respect that the Jacks and their fans have for the game has something to do with that. Will what Zimmer did on twitter have an effect on what other coaches and sids think about the Jacks I dont know. I know what he tweeted about the fans of SDSU will have an effect on what I think of him. AJ and the team have built a lot of respect from others about SDSU and the fans have too. I believe Zimmer did do a lot of damage to that by his tweets. He doesnt get paid by SDSU to cover the team but he is our media face and should respect what others have to say about the program. I for one believe he really doesnt care about State. And for not being there and seeing the effort he should have kept his trap shut. My two cents.

This whole thing is not about needing validation imo. Muffet was just showing respect, and I didn't treat it any different than if one of SDSUs players or coaches thanked the crowd. I guess I respected it more since Muffet had never did it before in her career.

Re: GDT: Jackrabbits vs, The Irish

Secondary sports are always tough, especially for us that are closest to the teams. We had two top ten teams in WBB and Wrestling today inside Frost, but the majority of JN wouldn't know that. I think Muffet was genuinely impressed with Frost and the fans, and more importantly AJ and the women. Regardless if you think Muffet's comments were condescending or genuine (totally genuine btw) shouldn't matter. Enjoy the fact that we can fet teams like ND, Virginia Tech, Okie St, etc. to come to Frost. Go Jacks!

What official name does the Notre Dame head women's basketball coach use to identify herself? I see all kinds of names thrown in these posts such as Moffitt, Muffett, McGraw????? Maybe we should get her name right before referring in vain to this woman who was grateful for playing to a near full house at Frost. Upon doing a Google her name is Muffett McGraw. Never mind, and interesting name though and apparently a very good coach with class. I am sure AJ appreciated her more than JACKGUYII

Zimmer is doing a great job and I enjoy reading his writing. I wish I had time to participate in the chat.

Completely disagree. He's not a drone that needs to toe the company line. If he has an opinion and feels like sharing it, go for it. I still haven't seen any tweet where he got emotional or lost his cool or was in a twitter war.

But I'm done discussing this is as well. Peace.
