Re: SDSU - MARIST game thread

The Red Foxes were as billed. They have some very skilled players. There were no shots dropping for the Jackrabbits in the first quarter. Gabby and Alexis brought some stability to the team in the first half. The entire team seemed to be involved in the offensive rebounding which kept the team in the first half game and pulled away in the second half. The 3rd quarter was explosive as they outscored the Red Foxes by 13. Young had the most impressive line of 11 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 block, and 12 points(6-14 shooting). The turnovers for the team was only 7! Free throw shooting was a bit disappointing at 57% which should easily improve.. Overall, this was a solid first game which was nice to have in Frost rather than on the road. Arkansas will probably require a bit more effort to find the win.

The offense ran much better in the second half when we figured out it would work taking the ball to the basket rather than passing around the perimeter and chucking up threes like was happening in the first half. I liked the lineup with Alexander running the point with Macy and Gabby on the wings. Miller seems to get better angles driving to the basket from the wing rather than from up top. Less congestion and fewer bodies in the way.

I think shooters shoot better when they're relaxed and things seem to be going their way,as opposed to stressed ,anxious to atone for a bunch of misses.I was glad they gave the three point shooting a rest and started moving the ball around till it found the open player with a good shot'The offense seemed to run so much more smoothly once they got some easy buckets down.
Ebb and flow, when it's going well everything's easier, when it's not, everything seems harder.Got to ride those good times and get as much out of them as you can. This team will continue to get better the more confidence they gain, and the more composure ,assuredness they will play with by gaining that confidence.

Next up Arkansas, who will no doubt have revenge on their minds for snatching a win from them last year. They'll be tough, but this time we'll be home. One more game to get better before we tackle the Irish.

Miller did have a great night with 19 pts on 8-17 shooting, 4 assists, 6 rebounds, and a steal. Gabby has shown better shooting this year than any year that I recall. Last year I did not see Alexis moving her game up as she has early this year. The rotation last night had 3 starters with 30 or more minutes of action and only 56 minutes from the bench. That seems less than other years. The first rough glance of last year was 70 minutes for the bench.

I really thought this was a quality win for us considering how poorly overall we played. Now that Marist is 0-7 I'm not so sure...

They have had a difficult schedule to this point as well. They are no longer getting votes from the college insider poll. Louisville, LSU, St John, Creighton, SDSU, Missouri St., and Delaware make for a stiff OOC that may have backfired this year. They have had 1 home game thus far too. Marist could still be the favorite for their conference and get the 16 seed in the tourney. That would give a bit of meat to our victory.

I questioned the quality of win when they got stomped by Creighton a few nights later...i think they lost by 40+

They are a very young team. I want to say that 3 or 4 players transferred out(?). They will get better as the season progresses and will be in line to for a tournament championship. Its more than likely that it wont be the quality win like it should be, but it will still be a decent win against a perennial top women's mid-major program.

At least the Jacks beat them
