Re: IPFW and Dead Mastodons Volume 2

I can't wait to shut off IPFW's livestats. I feel like I'm at risk for an epileptic seizure because of the darn thing.

28 seconds left, SDSU 69, IPFW 58 . . . looks like we have that one unless the bottom falls out.

Jacks win by 12, tough night for Vogel, Jen W. carried the team for the first 30 minutes. Great defense, poor shooting from the field and the line. Any win is a good one at the end of the year.

I agree, MD. Any win this late in the season is good and an opportunity not lost. The women should be one more victory away from that WNIT invite. Congratulations, Jacks, and good luck on Saturday.

Noticing again that Kratovil did not log any playing time this game. With Vogel and Warkentien in foul trouble there should have been more minutes to play. Has there been any problems in practice or has Nielsen been performing better as of late.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - It remains to be seen if South Dakota State will be deemed good enough to receive a bid for the WNIT.

But if nothing else, the women's basketball team proved again Thursday that, even when imperfect, it's good enough to win.

For the first time in their brief NCAA Division I history, the Jackrabbits did not lose their second-to-last game of the regular season, beating IPFW 70-58 before a crowd of 220 at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center.

In 2004-05, SDSU lost to rival North Dakota State in its penultimate game and last season got upended by University of California-Riverside, costing itself a shot at 20 wins and possibly the WNIT.

This season, the Jacks didn't stumble. But the outcome was close enough - considering SDSU won the first meeting with the Mastodons (12-16) by 52 points, anyway - to cause coach Aaron Johnston to throw out a what-if.

"I just thought we played exceptionally timid," he said, pausing an exceptionally long time before giving his take on the events of the night. "If we don't have Jen in this game, there's probably a 90-percent change we're going to lose."

But the Jacks did have forward Jen Warkenthien and they didn't lose, meaning they will take an 11-game win streak and 22-5 record into Saturday's regular-season finale at New Jersey Tech (4-23). . . . (read more)
