Paluch & Young *can* drive from the perimeter, but it seems that neither are comfortable doing so early in a possession, or taking their defender in iso. My sense is that they tend to establish themselves on the weak side and then dribble drive after a cross-court pass, when the defense has sagged off them to better help a strong side drive.
I noticed the mens team has more handoffs and they tend to operate further out to open up driving lanes.Wolters has a good move to get by the initial defender, and he's quicker than people think to finish the drive all the way to the hoop.A penetrating driver like him puts tremendous pressur on the defense so it free's up good outside shooters. We just try to get the ball to a posted up player and the defense is all over her.If Eide or someone can be a threat to drive all the way to the hoop, that would be a good thing.

A big difference between the men and women is that the women have been better able to work from the inside out through much of AJ's tenure, and most of his sets seem geared to draw defenders out to the perimeter before sending the ball into the post where one of the two Jacks bigs can exploit a one-on-one via skilled execution. The men, almost by necessity, need to be an outside-in team.

Once defenders start sagging to cutoff the passing lanes inside, or send an extra player into the post, the Jacks can establish their perimeter game. It's a strategy that is incredibly well suited to the players available in this area.

      But the requirements are these:

      - two skilled post players that can beat their defenders one-on-one (ideally, Lingle and Sunny)

      - a perimeter shot creator, someone capable of moving with the ball in the half court set, in order to break a tight man defense or trapping zone and penetrate, kickout or get the ball into the block.

Psychologically, the team also needs a floor leader that inspires confidence. Sunny did far better when she wasn't expected to lead the team on the court. I think it's unfair to expect seniors to lead regardless of their mental makeup, I think Ashley Eide is better suited to be a go-to player when the team needs someone to calm them down and restore order.

        Re: Marquette GDT

watching the games it seems that the other team knows that the first throw is gonna be to the post and that the Jacks will try to go inside, all the time, and will double cover the post not giving Sunny or Lingle any room to either shoot or pass back out. both are forcing their shots when they do take them and are missing bad because of the pressure and urgency to get the shot off. both feel the need to dribble once to the hoop and that lets the other team double up and either get a jump or a steal. because the inside game isn't working then the guards look like they are feeling the pressure and pushing their shots or making bad shots. when Sunny or Lingle are open, the guards are hurrying their passes inside to beat the defense and missing badly. they need to slow down and see the court

Does the title to this thread, Marquette GDT, stand for "Marquette, G@! D%&# Turnovers!"?

So is losing Rotert the big problem in not getting the ball to the posts? Both Sunnarborg and Lingle were pretty consistent scorers last season, even before Macie was back at full strength. Maybe not having a Rotert- type wing player allows another defender to cheat inside and clog up the paint.

I think both are missed, because both could move well with the ball. Eide could bloom into a Rotert-type player, I think--but not with the same sort of career stats of course.

The offense has been very frustrating so far this year, but the good news is the defense has been good, if not great, against some top tier opponents. This tells me we have the size and athleticism to compete at a very high level once the offense gets turned in the right direction.

I think Steph pollock has been able to get a few nice penetrations, past her defender but when she gets in the lane she doesn't attack the rim like macey used to. I think she either needs to develope a mid-range jumpshot or work on drawing contact and going up strong. I saw her get by her gal in this game and and in kansas only to get swallowed up by thier bigs and not get a quality lay-up attempt. Just an observation I think would get her at least 6 points a game.

First off, when your shooting poorly, turn overs do nothing but compound the problem. They seem to spend a lot of shot clock time running down lazy, tipped, or just plain bad passes. When they do get in the set offense,no one can get open ,so they take a bad shot to beat the clock, hence the poor shooting %.Jill was terriffic her FR year, 82- 3 ptrs and third nationaly in 3 pt fg %,but that was the 08-09 team, when she was left wide open, and she didn't have all the pressure on her to be "the" 3 pt shooter, as that team was loaded with great shooters,Wark,Boever,Muck,Oistad,Rotert, the list goes on.The offense we ran then (the same we run now,i assume) worked great then, because the 3pt shot was more than likely made rather than missed as it is now, then they went to work on the inside. We get steadily worse each year that we lose more terriffic shooters .This is just my thoughts, am i wrong on this?

Well, 'more likely made' implies an over 50% completion rate, which didn't happen, and while the 3-pt percentage was good, it was only used from the get-go against soft zone defenses (think TCU). Other than that, the team worked inside out.

I don't understand this inside out stuff,is that why our offense isn't working? They're trying to get it "inside" , and the opposition knows this(scouting)and the inside players are smothered.Explain it to me how the inside out is supposed to work when the inside is all clogged up.

If teams are collapsing inside to smother the posts, someone should be open more on the perimeter. We swing the ball around the outside and can't even seem to get good looks there.

ok...got it,we do look for an outside shot on every pocession if there's nothing to get first on the inside.(there isn't)Doesn't this make my first post relevent then?If there's nothing on the inside ,and nothing out on the perimeter....that's a whole lot of nothing. We need to get more points out of our offense,i hope it's just a mental shooting thing .The more likely made is in reference to more likely made by the 08-09 team as compared to being made by this years team.(clarification)

It's a mental thing. Sunny was 1-12, 3-12, and 1-4 the last the games, and Lingle hasn't been much better.
