    Re: Xavier

Xavier is going to have some big expectations assuming they win. Both teams to beat the Jacks in the tournament have went on to the Final Four.

Good luck to the Jacks first and foremost...and then good luck to X if they win.

Thanks for the score correction, I was operating off memory( which is not always great) but I can't spend all day verifying stats.....anyways I'm not disappointed in that performance, it's just weird that we have actually been sliding downward each year, rather than going up, which is what normally happens when a school shows continued success in any sport. Like I said in other posts, I'm very optimistic about this game.
With fans like this who needs enemas.....

I just looked at the stats for the 2008-2009 team.Unbelievable how offensively powerful that team was.The biggest thing ,IMO, was everyone, just about, could hit the 3 ptr .We had a very potent three point shooting team,so we could spread out any team we faced.Warkenthien was an absolute beast her senior year, she scored over 20 points 4 times that season, one was 29 and one was 28.Rotert scored twice over 20 that year. The reason we've had a harder time scoring , since that season,IMO, is because we've been steadily declining due to graduation in our 3 pt shooting prowess. When you get "down" to about three who can hit the three consistently (Jill,Kristin,Macie) your opponent can and does make it much harder for even very good three point shooters like Jill and Kristin to shoot high percentages like they did on a roster like 08-09.We had to go inside more, and the points are getting tougher to get there because the opponent doesn't have to worry about gaurding all five players out on the perimeter , but just 2 or three. If we can ever load up on 3 pt shooters again,we might get back to where we were in 2008-2009.

          Back to the Xavier game...

Here are 3 big keys I think will be huge for us to win this game. There are others, but I'd put these at the top of the list.

          1. We will have to make at least 10 threes. I like our entire group of post players but am concerned that their posts will limit us to some extent.
          2. Limit their second chance opportunities. Their size and athleticism needs will make this tough, but we have to scratch, claw, hipcheck, do whatever it takes to keep them off the offensive glass. If I had to put a number on it, I'd say keeping them under 10 offensive rebounds for the game would be great.
          3. Somehow force Xavier to be more perimeter orientated with their shot selection. I don't know what that would require from us (possible zone, possibly more of a sagging defense, I don't know really).

            Re: Xavier

Get Amber Harris in foul trouble, without our posts getting in trouble.

Xavier should go to the inside until we stop that. Xavier will expect SDSU to bomb them out from 3's. If we can get any inside game going, Jacks will be much better off. (Stealing TV's Mr. Obvious)

Maybe more important will be the ability of Lingle and Sunnarborg to stay out of foul trouble and play 30 + minutes each. They both have had problems with this, and if they have to sit for extended periods,Xavier's two bigs will be hard matchups for Dietel and Stroup. Unfortunately, the Jacks probably won't catch many breaks from the officiating crew against a highly favored team on their home court.

I don't disagree that length will help and Lingle and Sunnarborg are longer than any of our other posts. But I think Dietel is just as physical and maybe even more than other posts. Schuttloffel is the same....not longer but plays more physical.

Or...one has to consider that IMO, the conference has gotten better. I think they needed to step it up with the addition of the two XDSU's, and they did. Secondly, this year has to take into account that we lost our starting point guard (with two years as a starter) for a big share of the first half of the season. I think the last run of 11 wins in 12 games attested to the fact that the team was better because of Macie's return to full status and Lingle's surge as a sophomore. And while overall we have just as good or better talent according to AJ, we did not have this year a go-to player of the stature of Jenn Warkenthien. That team two years ago had a remarkable run...one that I cautioned everybody I talked to as making sure they understood how remarkable it was, and that seasons like that don't come along very often with few exceptions (I know UConn).

I'll tell you this: Facing Xavier is Aaron's toughest game ever. By far the most difficult matchup of the Division I era.

Yes, I agree the conference has gotten better, but many losses came OOC, a place we are usually fairly comfortable playing. Injuries did plague as well. I'm not bashing this team, I wholeheartedly believed they could make it back to the dance. I also believe this is going to be a really competitive game on Sunday. I'm just saying, it's a weird trend, to actually take steps back as you enter D1, rather than continue to go up.

And evidently another Jen is the new Warkenthein. She just needs to prove it this Sunday! How's that for pressure?

I agree....although Baylor and Oklahoma weren't toooo bad. From cursory stat checking some points of emphasis(if I'm reading them correctly). Xavier defends the 3 alright, IMO this is reflective a little bit from the fact no one in their conference can probably go inside on them. They are turnover prone, so the Jacks need to capitalize on that. As well as it looks like they do get into some foul trouble so the women need to hit the Free Throws. Those appear to be their weaknesses. I've never watched them, just going off statistical rankings. Otherwise they are solid and remind me a lot of Oklamhoma on paper. I have some guesses to what AJ will do.
It really depends on which team show up: San Diego State or South Dakota State......

                          Re: Xavier

Dayton has played Xavier within 4 pts twice this year, they seem to know the best way to play them. They (Dayton) are about the same size as us except for their 6'4" center, who is a shot blocker, and can make people alter their shot.Harris and Phillips avg about 35pts combined, which i doubt we can keep up with, but if we get 20-25 pts in the paint and the rest of the team can outscore their other three 11-16 pts, It's very possible we win this game. It's a must that we hold Harris(19 ppg) and Phillips(16 ppg) to their avg ,or preferably, below their avg,to have a chance.Moss is their other double digit scorer at 10 ppg.We need three or four players on the team to have a really big game ,and get into double digit scoring, and play the best defense we've played to date.I think it's possible to pull this off, if everything falls into place.Go get'm Jacks.
