You can't judge the importance of a player's performance by points scored alone.

I don't know the turnover numbers so can comment on that, but seems to me that is a big key in playing the game.
This is especially true for point guards. Heiser didn't score, but she had 9 assists and only 2 turnovers - considering the lack of playing time she has had so far this season, those are excellent numbers. In most cases,a high scoring point guard is not a good thing - their main job is to create for the rest of the team. The exception to that is Wolters - even though he scores a lot,he still gets others involved.

No, points alone aren't indicative of a players performance. BUT, it certainly helps. For cryin' out loud, we are struggling to score over 50 pts a game, so I'd say points are kinda important right now. Also, those players that aren't scoring points better be doin' other things on the court to help the team win...and that's not happenin' right now. jackdaniel's point is valid. There are 200 player minutes in a game. You will have a hard time winning when 129 of those minutes combine for 10 pts.

Wow,add Roterts 24 mins, you have five players playing 99 minutes of basketball for 4 pts.
Jills 30 mins added and you have six players playing 129 minutes of basketball, and scoring a combined 10 pts.
That's each one playing an avg of 21 1/2 min and avg 1.66 pts each for the entire game. How many games are you going to win with those numbers?
The only players that had decent numbers were Sunnarborg,Lingle,Waytashek and Strop.
The only thing positive is that we played this lousy and still had a chance to win this game.Mostly due to rebounding and forcing Utah State into more turnovers. We had 10 more shots at the basket ,I alway's thought this was the key, obviously not when enough of them don't drop thru.We again outshot our opponents FG percentage,in a losing effort.Fouls are most likely what cost us this game,we made only 10, they got 20 pts. from foul shots.
If your scorers (Rotert,Young,Sunnarborg) consistently get close to their averages, you can afford to have a point guard and a good defensive and rebounding forward that don't score much and still be effective. It's when your scorers don't come through that the wheels fall off.

Yes no offense certainly is a troubling factor, but why are they not getting good looks at the bucket, might be a more valid concern. Looks to me AJ has his hands full this year, and a number of things are not working. Lack of scoring is one of many to be concerned about.

              This.

We kept the turnovers down, rebounded okay but missed too many shots and didn't have anyone on the perimeter that we could count on to score.

Women's basketball has pretty much evolved around the 3-point shot and the short shot clock. In order to be successful, women's teams have to make perimeter shots and why not take them from just a little further back and get 3 points instead of 2. The Jacks aren't going to win any games against decent teams if we don't make at least five 3's and probably closer to eight or ten. We just don't have those kind of players. It opens up the driving and passing lanes and takes a defender away from the boards. AJ has built teams with excellent perimeter shooters and a solid post game. I think Sunny has the post skills she needs some help from the perimeter.

I know there have been mentions of practice intensity and the like, but game performance speaks volumes of a players worth.
I'll bite my tongue about some of the comments on here (for those who want to look elsewhere for entertainment "bye, bye"...or, you're only good if you are in the top 5% of women's basketball teams, otherwise you suck)...but in response to your post NJ, I'm a little at a loss over your comment when it comes to Waytashek at least...AJ has been playing her...a lot...and for quite awhile...she's been starting for some time for goodness sake. As for Heiser, IMO AJ has been trying to stick with getting Macie back up to speed. If she doesn't get there, Heiser may well be moving up the food chain.

Not sure about your comment about Waytashek starting ... checked all the box scores, and she has come off the bench in every game.

I was gonna say the same thing...I've been to every home game and she hasn't started a one. Here's been the different starting lineup combinations to my knowledge:

                    Macie/Steph
                    Young/Rotert
                    Rotert/Eide
                    Dietel/Schutt
                    Sunnie

I might not have all the positions exactly correct...but Waytashek hasn't started yet. I think that's soon to change though

If we are going to sustain the success we have enjoyed over the last few years at the DI level IMHO we are going to need to find some quicker players at the guard position and some more length that can rebound. It may take us out of our current recruiting geographical footprint. I think we made some mistakes on who we offered in our sophmore class.

I agree JackGuy, and stated it last week. We need more athleticism - especially at the guard position. That attribute seems to be rare in SD and MN. This area produces a bunch of nice jump shooters, but you don't see a lot of speed, quickness, explosiveness, etc.

Even when at our best a couple of years ago we had troubles with really athletic, explosive guards. A player like that opens up shots for others, gets to the foul line, and gets some points in the paint for themselves. Those are all key elements near the end of a tight game.

What ever helps cut down the TO ratio that will help, thats always been a problem for AJs teams. I would like to see a better ability to get the ball inside with a true post which would open up taking double teams. Or a guard who can drive and call for a double team to get an open post or 3. Would be nice if they are fast enough to drive and finish on their own.

My bad if you and others are correct (didn't check)...thought she started at least once. But to bolster what I said in my post...among the non-starters, only Ashley Eide has logged more time per game (18.3 minutes) than Waytashek (17.1), which I believe proves the point that AJ certainly has recognized her abilities. And I think Eide has earned every minute she has played as well.

Yep. What I like about Eide is that she is looking to score when she has the ball. Love that mentality.

I like Eide's agressiveness, but she sure makes a lot of unforced turnovers.
