    Re: WNIT

In the USA Today Sports Section on page 4 there is an article on Marching toward Tournament.

What's the best team that won't get an NCAA bid this season?

"It could be South Dakota State, the 2003 Division II champion making the transition to Division Iand ineligible for an NCAA bid this season. The Jackrabbits (18-5) have beaten Middle Tennessee State,Southern Cal,Virginia,Kansas,Colorado,Alabama, and Minnesota. They should get a WNIT bid.

I predict that our 5 losses will either be in the NCAA or the WNIT. If in the WNIT with the Jacks, I hope we'll get the chance to play them at Frost!

But I thought that there aren't really any D1 players on our team other than Megan Vogel? And wouldn't we finish in the middle of the NCC if we were still D2? [/sarcasm]

I think he was talking about the teams we have lost to making post season play.

Thanks BHM! Yes, I expect that all teams we lost against will make post season play. Several of the non-UBC teams we beat, especially BCS conference teams will make the post-season.

Baylor, Marquette, Middle Tenn St., WKU are likely to make the NCAA's. Virginia, Minn, USC, Ark St. are likely to be in the WNIT.

SDSU women getting attention from national media

Frankly, we're running out of ways to say it: The South Dakota State women's basketball team is good. Really good. And with 10 freshmen and sophomores on the roster and NCAA Division I tournament eligibility two years away, there's no reason to believe the program won't get even better, but there's at least a chance that it won't - if only because the current team is that good.

On Monday, ESPN.com published a projected NCAA tournament bracket and according to the Wobus Sports Ranking Comparison - calculated by combining 16 independent systems - SDSU is ranked No. 29. The ranking puts the Jacks ahead of 15 teams that are in line to earn at-large bids in the field of 64. This doesn't include the number of statistically inferior clubs that will gain automatic berths by winning crummy conference tournaments. (On a related note, projected Mid-Continent Conference champion Oakland is No. 132 with a 14-10 record.)

On Wednesday, USA Today claimed that SDSU - in just its third Division I season - could be the best team that won't get an NCAA bid. . . . (read more)

Next year is their last year in DII, so no.  Then in 08-09 they'll still count as DII to DI teams and DI to DII teams, I think that's how it works, so the WNIT would conisder them as DII still. So the earliest they would be eligible is the 09-10 season, I believe.
