  • Oakland Golden Grizzlies

I wondered if Oakland would be walking around with their heads down a bit after being demoralized in their non-conference games against big name teams. I'm sure their fans were confident they would knock off a big name foe with their talent they had coming back. The last time they lost was to Syracuse on Dec. 22 by 32 points. Well they've won eight straight since then. So much for walking around with their heads down.

No Kangas is a good thing because that guy could shoot, and make, anything on their side of half court. It appears Benson has really stepped up his game at the offensive end at 17 ppg and his FT shooting is in the '70's, which I recall him being around 50% last year. To go along with that he's at 10 boards and about 3 blocks per game. Jones makes them tick. His assists are down from last year at just over 6 per game, but that may be because of the blowouts they ended up being on the short end of in the non-conference. He's good, don't blink or he'll pick your pocket and be at the bucket in a hurry.

AC and whoever's on Jones are the key. AC played Benson pretty well last year and was able to draw fouls on him. He didn't seem to be able to move AC's stocky frame. Benson will use and abuse Engen on both ends of the floor. They're the same player as far as frame and size goes, only Benson is way more skilled. I don't know if the right play on Jones is Palarca, Moss or Wolters. Obviously it will be a combination, but somebody's got to step up. He killed Palarca last year because they're the same height, only Jones is way quicker and can shoot over him. Moss and Wolter's size are good plays if they can keep Jones in front of them. I like Wolter's taking it at him, obviously taking care of the ball, but the shot-blocking machine looms in the middle. Maybe Wolters can draw a foul or two on him.

Oh, and they jack three's a lot too, even without Kangas. So they are obviously a very tough team to guard because they are well rounded.

NDSU only hit 3-3pointers and were only 14-22 from the line, so they definately could have beat Oakland. They drew close at the end, but didn't finish it.

Oakland is obviously tough, but beatable. 40 minutes of good basketball, not 20 against this team. Defend the home court. You guys beat a very good ORU team at Frost, you can beat an even better OU team too.

Even the Tulsa World writer think this is the best game this weekend.

"Possible pitfall for the Grizzlies. SDSU can give anyone trouble with its outside shooting.

im confident that kelo is right and we are not going to get all the ice they were predicting. which means we should have a great crowd tommorrow night, which means....look out oakland.

I think it will take the best effort the guys can muster, for the entire 40 minutes, but I also think they're quite capable of taking care of business.

The snow we have in Brookings has a nice layer of ice on it. If you are walking on sidewalks with any snow on it, that is going to be the slickest spot right now. Places without snow have puddles of water, which later tonight will freeze up pretty good.

I was a little surprised Oakland only beat NDSU by 6 (not intended to be smack at NDSU). This is 'the team' for the Summit. From what some of the stats posted show, NDSU could have won this game. Just play a complete game and no brain farts.

Electing to be cautious we did not drive up after rounds last night. Planning to head up there soon. If anyone advises against it let me know. We plan to drive back after the game tonight.

The women should take care of business. I assume Coach has been emphazising the need to play team defense and value the ball on offense. Oakland will be gunning for us but Frost is our house and they can't come in here and beat us.

As for the men, I hope the Grizzlies are over-confident. We were the last conference team to beat them but I don't think they believe we were better than them last year in that game. I think they feel it was a fluke. 40 minutes of intensity should prove them wrong. Going to have to shoot well, make FT's and win the rebound battle. We won Thursday for the first time all year when the other team outrebounded us and it was close.

Excited for a great night of ball at Frost Arena tonight! Should be two great games!

I'm looking for the men to bring the intesity we saw in the second half Thursday night. They know what is at stake, that we beat them last year in our house, and they have nothing to lose.

If we some emotion out of the team early look out!

WE HAVE TO DO OUR PART! MAKE SOME NOISE PEOPLE!!! LET'S GIVE THE GRIZ A WARM SOUTH DAKOTA WELCOME!

Maybe I should miss the first half hour of this game, too . . . since we were up something like 25-9 in the women's game by the time I tuned in . . .

6-5 Griz at under 16 TO.

Engen's trying and hustling. Unfortunately, getting pushed around on D.

I am about ten rows from the top and heard it. Foul was called on Engen
