A few quotes from Jacks fans in the first half (please note I say this tongue in cheek as I had similar thoughts):

"As athletic as this team is sure seems to not translate well into game results." We're 6-2 in conference.

"I think we have to dust off the S word . . . Soft." Soft teams don't come back from a 14 point halftime deficit.

"I would pull the starters put in the end of the bench." An interesting tactic to say the least.

"Pathetic. I will not be tuning in for the second half." I was right there with ya. Thank goodness I'm all talk.

"I'm gonna take heat for this but I feel Palarca needs to find his warmup." Why do you suppose Nate can get around defenders in the second half, but not the first? Could they be tired from chasing a waterbug around for half the game?

"I think we have great players, a great coach, But some how thats not translating to wins on the court. This culture of losing has to stop." A losing culture is more like a freight train than a sports car. They are hard to stop, and even harder to turn around. We're making progress.

"I'm not starting the "Fire Nagy" chants, but WTF is going on?" What does the team need to do for this nonsense to stop? We have a better record than all but 2 teams in the conference. In our second year of tournament eligibility...

    C'mon guys, keep the faith!!!
A perfect example of the adage, "You are never as bad as it seems when you are losing and never as good as you think when you are winning."

Although it does make for an entertaining GDT. Plus, it is great that this team has improved enough this year that they can make us eat our words by the end of the game. I will take looking like a fool if they continue to win.

Well if nothing else, we have confirmed the "bad half" theory discussed after the NDSU game.

Great comeback. How good is Nate Wolters going to get in the next 3 years?
      Holy nutmeg!

I will take a good second half over a bad first half anytime, especially if SDSU has more points on the board at the end of the game. It was hard to listen too when we were down 13 points, and IPFWU kept popping them in from the perimeter. If we can control the perimeter like we should we should win most of our games. It does not matter where Kai was or was not on offense, I thought he was a very good player when he first hit the floor and I still think that. Its a team effort on Defense that is still our weak point and has been all season. Defensive play is keeping us from reaching the next level, and has cost us a few games.

When I mentioned Boones Farm during the bison game someone replied drinking a cheap wine and comparing it to how the team was playing, good thing I didnt write that I was now going to switch to Ripple after the first half this game because the Dom Perignon was frozen waiting for this team to be consistent.

            A little perspective....
We are 6-2 in conference. (3-0 at home) (3-2 on the road)
We are above .500 this season heading into the home stretch of the conference season Sitting at 10-9. Five of those losses come Dec. 3 or earlier. We are 4-1 in the last five games, which included THREE road games.

            This time last season...

Conference record we were 3-5 (3-1 home) (0-4 road)
Overall record 8-12. The last five games played we were 2-5 heading into another 2-5 stretch (three OT games)

            Going forward...

we have Five home games and four road games... of the four road games Two of them are going to be BIG wins if we can pull them off BUT it will take complete games. (Oakland, IPFW, OR, Cent.) which makes defending Frost the rest of the way out Huge. Home games: Oakland, Southern Utah, UMKC, NDSU, IUPUI.

            anyhow... just perspective...

I will take 14 points and 10 rebounds any night. I agree Kai could pretty much score as many points as he wanted, but he is pretty unselfish.

Made it to the game last night. I-29 wasn't bad.

If they play a half like that against Oakland, they'll be in a hole an NBA team couldn't get out of against the Grizzlies. But kudos to them for doing it last night. I knew they couldn't shoot as poorly in the second half as they did in the first and IPFW was hitting everything under the sun for awhile. It wasn't always bad defense. Then the defense picked up and IPFW got uncomfortable with their shots and all was good, except I had this bad feeling they were going to run out of gas and not finish because he used the same lineup most of the second half. How about no turnovers in the second half until in the last minute? Very good, but then very bad timing on the ones at the end.

Wolters should shoot that three he took for the lead more often. Teams are banking on him driving all the time and playing off of him outside the arc. That shot was a complete ice water in his veins. On the comment about him for the next three years. How about Wolters for the rest of this year if he would play two halves of basketball?

AC was better last night. Was in foul trouble so he was more cautious than lazy. Better be gearing up for Benson who had a big night last night. AC did well against him last year. Maybe this is his turning point of the season.

All in all, it was an ugly win for the most part, but it goes in the W column, so that's what counts.

Bring the heat for 40 minutes tomorrow night and knock off that 14 game conference win streak by the Grizzlies.

Oh it was definitely a very good night for him. Some of the boards he snagged on D were Tyler Cain like

I just think there are some possessions down the stretch where he needs to demand the ball and score. Cause he can. He showed some signs of it last night, but I think it needs to happen slightly more frequently. I also think he should do the same thing at times in the first half when the game is slipping away. I realize I'm nitpicking, but watching him play it is very evident that he is a supremely talented basketball player and I think he can dominate games if he wanted to.

I thought it was huge that we committed to get the ball into AC last night. Sure, he struggles from the line but he has a great touch around the basket. He had a lot of quality shots that just about went in. We need that for the stretch.

Kai was everywhere last night! Diving for loose balls, getting huge rebounds, and being very physical. He took control in the second half. Sure he could be more aggressive finding his shot but he was very aggressive everywhere else. Bottom line, when he does that we are really tough to beat!

Nate Wolters has the tools to really make the offense click. He is solid at driving the bucket, can hit the three, and is a solid defender. Need it all game long not second half.

I'm sure we all had the same not in our stomach at halftime. Just brutal. The team was completely different the second the all went into play for the second half. They are learning, improving, playing with emotion, and I think they are only going to continue to improve.

Will say it now, SDSU is the team nobody will want to play in Sioux Falls because they are figuring it out!

Here's to coming out with that intensity from the opening tip Saturday and sending that grumpy coach back home with another L!

If this team decided to really commit to playing 200 intense, focused minutes, they will be a tough out for most Summit teams.

That's their Achilles heel right now. They're mercurial--for a while they'll look soft, lackadasical, and not particularly interested, and then they turn around and play like demons and look like a pretty darn good basketball team. And nobody--not even Nagy, knows which mood they'll hit the floor with from game to game, from half to half.

Come to think of it, they kind of remind me of some of those Northern Colorado or Nebraska-Omaha teams in the old NCC--the ones that had all kinds of talent but rarely seemed to be able to put it together for whatever reason. The Jacks in those days IMHO usually didn't quite match up on a sheer athletic ability basis with those teams, but those SDSU teams had far, far superior discipline and "want-to" and usually won the games from those UNC or UNO teams.

I wonder if what we saw in both the second half in Fargo and the first half of the IPFW game was a bit of a trap-game syndrome where the guys--maybe unconsciously--started coasting a bit, thinking that Oakland on Saturday was going to be The Big Game. They got up on the Bison and maybe relaxed a bit too much, and weren't ready for the intensity the Bison came out with in the second half of that game. And, maybe they came out in their home arena after a two-week road trip a bit too relaxed, too, and were basically abused by IPFW in that first half, but had (barely) enough to recover and pull out that win.

Well, enough armchair psychoanalysis . . . let's go out and beat the Grizzlies, and pull them a bit back to the pack in the conference!

                        It's a learning process.

Plus, as Garrett said of the previous losses to NDSU by 20 or more points, "those games are easy to lose."

The upper classmen, at this late of a date in their career, are learning how to win. And there will be stumbles and bumps in that process. There will be halves like the second half in Fargo and the first half yesterday.

And regarding the need for Kai to demand shot opportunities, or be set up for more plays, (with apologies to Jon Landau), "I have seen the future of Jackrabbit basketball and its name is Nate Wolters."

For the next three and a half years, Nate will be the guy demanding the ball when the game is on the line. SDSU doesen't need anyone else to do that, and, as fans, we are sure as heck going to miss him when he's gone.

But again, a passionate fanbase is only a good thing. Speaking of KU fans...Bill Self said, after KU won the Nat'l Championship, that the KU program was guided by the fans and the fans expectations.

I don't think you have to be overly-athletic to be able to get open. Watch Mike Tviedt work to get a shot and then watch Kai, GC and Sarg....not even close. Too much standing around....IMO of course.

I agree 100% on the passionate fans part (if you live in Tea, you may have heard me screaming at my computer last night).

HOWEVER... Palarca seemed to work out okay in the WIU game, you know, our first ever conference road win ... How quickly we forget those 3 point daggers he hit in the final moments of that game.

IMO, Palarca adds a dimension to the team offensively and defensively that Nate alone can't. I think Palarca's style of play has a wear down effect on opponents that helps Nate to shine down the stretch. And I'm not saying Nate isn't special, I'm just saying the combo strategy has worked out fairly well for us so far.

In all seriousness, Palarca, Engen, heck even Kai, AC and others have been thrown under the bus by a lot of us armchair coaches (myself included) at some point or another. My point is, in order for this team to contend for a for a conference championship and tournament title, they are going to need everyone.

My beef w/ Palarca is that he's easy to shoot over and almost can't get a shot off. Did you see his drive last night to the hoop against Yearby? You knew he wasn't going to get it even close (Yearby blocked it into row 3).

Our best lineup (kind of a no brainer):

                                PG - Wolters
                                SG - GC
                                SG - Sargent
                                PF - Kai
                                PF - AC

I like the energy Dale, Griff and Mark bring off the bench. Palarca could do the same. Only problem is none of those guys are real scorers. Fiegen deserves a few minutes too.
