    Heien keeps hoppin’

    BY MIKE JOHNSON

When the 2005-06 season started for the South Dakota State University men's basketball team, it is very likely that most fans had little or no idea who Eric Heien was. . . .

Through the first seven games of the season, Heien did not see much court time. He was averaging less than one point per game.
During these three games, which include wins over Missouri-Kansas City Monday and Denver last Saturday, the 6-foot guard from Gettysburg has averaged 14.7 points per contest. He's shooting 3-pointers at a 57 percent clip (12-of-21). He's connected on four 3-pointers in each of the last three games.
Heien came up big again in the Jackrabbits' 72-65 win over UMKC Monday, knocking in 4-of-6 treys en route to a team-leading and career-high 18 point performance, breaking his previous career-high of 14 set on Saturday against Denver.
"He's just a good basketball player, and right now he's putting us on his back a little bit," Nagy said. "What he's doing is he's opening things up for other people."
With Heien suddenly drawing more attention from opposing defenses — like he did from UMKC — Matt Cadwell and Ben Beran were two players who took advantage.
Cadwell netted 15 points and seven assists before leaving the game with a concussion. Beran had 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
Not only did Heien help carry the load on offense, but he helped lock down UMKC's top scorer Quinton Day to 12 points on a dismal 5-of-20 shooting performance.
"Eric was the guy on him, and Eric really did a good job," Nagy said. "We put a smart basketball player on him...Day is a tremendous player, he really is, and he (Heien) did a great job on him."
The Jackrabbits won't play until next Tuesday against Manhattan in Sioux Falls.
Rest assured, it's another opportunity Heien is looking forward to.

    Go State! ;D
