  • Rotation...

My desired rotation, including minutes per game: For the record, I think we have been spreading minutes around a little much. I know, I know, it's early and we have to figure out a rotation. That's not easy and it probably has hurt s early on. Hopefully now we have a decent idea as we play conference games this Thurs and Sat....

    STARTERS:
    PG-Wolters.........32MPG
    SG-Ga Callahan....31MPG
    SF-Moss.............11MPG
    PF-WIlliams.........30MPG
    PF-Cordova.........32MPG

    BENCH:
    PG-Palarca...............8MPG
    SG/SF-Sargent.........31MPG
    SG/SF-White............6MPG
    SG/SF-Gr Callahah.....3MPG
    PF-Fiegen................18MPG
    PF-Cassaday/Rader....?

I have always liked having a deep bench. I say make Sargent your 6th man and that way you can kind of stagger your players a little more. Plus I like being able to pull a true scorer/shooter off the bench. Give Moss that SG/SF starting spot and let him concentrate on rebounding and defense while he's out there.

Not sure what to think about Casaday and Rader. I know it's early but it's tough to tell who deserves the minutes more...if at all. I guess it could depend on the opponent. Cassaday is more of a blue color guy, banger/rebounder (even though he's only 6'6) and Rader is more finesse.

I'm just not sure about Moss right now or what suits him best. Is he best suited at SF? Is he best on the floor w/ Wolters? His lack of a jumper kind of hinders him. I don't think his dee is all that great either. I just kind of see him as a guy without a role or identity. Moss is shooting 58% from the field and leads the team in blocks (3) but his 3/8 assist to TO ratio bothers me (Palarca is 17/4 and Wolters is 18/12).

Griffan Callahan is a guy who kind of worries me. We just haven't seen alot out of him in hs time here. I'm just not real impressed and not sure what he offers? I know he's supposed to be an outside shooter, but we really haven't seen it yet. Maybe he just needs a little more time.

If Fiegen plays like he did against Denver I would give him alot of minutes. Maybe give Kai some more minutes at the 3 and have Fiegen and Cordova on the floor at the same time and see how that plays out for us. Denver could just be one of those nights for Fiegen and he might have benefitted more from the opponent. But still, it hopefully gave him confidence that he can play at this level and gave us room for hope. If he's ca play at least near that level and he and AC can stay out of foul trouble it could let us run a 9-man rotation if we want to.

Not sure where Chad White fits in right now. Is he kind of waiting in the wings? Waiting to replace someone? Or is the staff looking to get him more minutes. He is 4-7 on 3's and if he continues shooting well that could earn him more minutes as we really need that off the bench. I think he eventually steals minutes from Griffan and maybe even Moss.

I like your second option a bit better. If we have the talent, lets spread the minutes around. As a team they got worn out at the end of the year last year playing to many minutes and just pysically couldnt take it.

      PG
      Wolters 27 - Palarca 13
      SG
      Cahallan 29 - Moss 11 - Grif C - 4
      SF
      Sargent 28 - White 8 - Rader 5
      PF
      Williams 28 - Fiegen 10
      C
      Cordova 27

Final 10 minutes split between the rest of the team and those can change with potential match up problems we can use to our advantage.

Just because I have them listed as with more minutes, doesnt mean they have to start. I could go with Sargent off the bench. Start Moss and fiegen can play the PF and move down to SF and add height inside but allow for a lot of talent to come off the bench in certain situations.

        Re: Rotation...

Not a lot of love for Griffan Callahan here, which puzzles me a little bit.

I think the coaches have referred to his toughness and defense multiple times as being some of the best on the team, if not the best. Two qualities we could really use on the court if we hope to turn the trend of blown leads and conference road losses.

He also has more rebounds per minute than any player on the team besides AC so far this year.

As far as his scoring goes, he is enough of a deep threat (~35% last season)that teams have to play him honest, which should free up opportunities for the other true scorers on the floor.

Moss should have been on the football field.

Dale only getting 5 mpg? Griffan not even listed for any minutes? (Griff played pretty good for a freshman last year.) You aren't going to expect a freshman to start and average 25 minutes a game. Remember when Nagy would bring players in the game after about 2.5-3 minutes. He did that to put scorers on the bench to bring in to replace the other scorers who started. Find who is hot, let them stay on the court a little longer, then they get taken out by the starter who went to the bench early. Let the scorers get a feel for the game instead of warming up and sitting on the bench.
Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!--Bluto--

Yes but, Defense sometimes enters the equation and the decisions of Coach Nagy. Do you remember Casey Walker and the other JUCO, who could shoot the lights out, but were horrible on defense? I dont think that Coach Nagy has all of sudden become a real advocate for offense winning games. I suspect he still believes that defense wins games.

Consistency on defense probably plays a big part here. I dunno, just my guess.

                  Re: Rotation...

Maybe it's just me but I don't get too hung up on this rotation stuff. Different opponents call for different line-ups and that includes who starts. I also believe playing time is earned!

What I want to see is player's playing with consistent intensity on the court. Aggressive on both ends of the court. If that happens the team will be pretty good. It is vital that they start the conference season well to gain some confidence. The talent is there, the question is if there is a fire in their belly?

Nagy has switched the lineups around quite a bit. He has said it is to find out where everybody fits but also has made it clear that those that work hard are going to get the minutes. Makes sense to me.

The games that matter start tonight!

I was trying to get to the point fresh legs means better defense. How many hand check fouls or holds were called the last couple of years? That's what too many minutes does to someone. Turk Watson was here around the same time as Casey, but Casey was the better shooter of the two.

I could not think of Turk's name thanks, but I see your point.
