Re: SDSU vs Manhattan (N.Y.) in Sioux Falls

These boys are starting to believe. Nagy probably won't be real happy because he's seeing them climb out of the hole they've been in and he's starting to see some potential.

Gritty performance in the setting of 20 plus turnovers and some foul trouble.  Nice job on the boards, continued trouble at the foul line.

Beran 3 at the buzzer, final score 73-70 Manhatten in OT.

Can't hang our heads.  Need to handle the ball and make FT's, that simple.

I wonder how many FT's we missed. At one point we were 11/23. This, along with averaging 20+ turnovers/game, has got to change. If it does, this could be a very good team.

A very respectable finish, but a win would have been real big. 2032 attendence okay, but the OT should open a few more eyes.

Cadwell with 25, Gilbert 17, Beran 11, Berte 10 (almost all in the 1st half).  Loney nowhere in the second half.

              FT  18-33 (54%)  3's 8-17

23 turnovers and only 11 assists.

Outrebounded by 4, they were 6 better on offensive glass.

                  Nagy post-game highlights:

                  Nagy emphasizes inexperience.

Can't believe we can't make FT's, gave the game away.

23 turnovers, averaging 20/game. Can't win when playing like that. Happy with the effort but can't win with 20+ to's.

Nagy questions his coaching with this team. Can't seem to help them.

Happy with Cadwell, disappointed with Ben. Nagy feels Ben is pressing. Too many 3-point attempts.

Needed someone in the low-post in 2nd half, no one there.

Berte double double but not there in 2nd half. Expects 10+ boards per night from Berte.

Allowed too many offensive rebounds for them. Happy with the D otherwise. They outrebounded us by 4, six on the offensive glass and they are a poor rebounding team. Nagy thinks we are tired.

Andre can become a scorer but settles for too many jumpers. Needs to penetrate, get to the rim.

Nagy ready for Minnesota. Feels we are close but we just don't know how to win at this level.

Admits he is hard on the guys but that is because he loves them.

Just got back from the game. It was a nice crowd for the most part. Free throws in my opinion were the biggest thing. Obviously turnovers are huge but you have to do better then 1-6 on technical and intentional free throws. This team has obviously improved and are starting to realize their potential I think.

I'm just back as well. Good crowd, very animated. Good contingent of students across the way. Could have been more, but what the heck, those that were there saw a good game.

If we hit our free throws, we win this game. Pure and simple. Even with all of the turnovers and everything else going on in the game. Manhattan was not an overpowering team tonight--they tried very hard to keep us in the game.

You can see game by game the Jacks are getting better, however. Gilbert was more active tonight than he was earlier in the year. Berte played very well in stretches. Cadwell is the real deal. Heien didn't have a very good game, I thought--not much production and at least one key turnover I can think of.

Coming off the court, the team didn't look beaten, they looked unhappy. That itself says a lot. Like Nagy said, when they see the tape tomorrow they're going to feel bad, because this really was a game they could have won.

Next up, the Golden Gophers. Go Rabbits!

When Matt Cadwell willed in a 3-pointer with a few ticks left in regulation, it looked like South Dakota State had plenty of momentum heading into overtime.

Manhattan just had too much C.J. Anderson for the Jackrabbits to pull out their second OT win in 11 days.

The sophomore scored seven of his 23 points in Tuesday's extra period as the Jaspers survived a scrappy SDSU effort for a 73-70 victory in the first Division I basketball game at Sioux Falls Arena.

Poor free-throw shooting, one of the Jacks' main shackles all year, haunted them again. They went just 18 of 33 from the line, and the four fewer makes than Manhattan (4-4) proved to be costly.

"We shoot plenty of them - that's not the problem," SDSU coach Scott Nagy said. "It's become a recurring theme, it's contagious, and everybody knows it. ... It cost us tonight, there isn't any question."

SDSU, which defeated Denver 81-78 in overtime on Dec. 10, lost last year's meeting with the Jaspers 73-69 in Riverdale, N.Y.

After going scoreless for more than seven minutes to start the second half Tuesday, the Jackrabbits (3-8) overcame a nine-point deficit in the final six minutes to force overtime. Cadwell had eight points in that stretch, including the pump-fake 3 from the right wing that swished with 4.4 seconds to play.

When Manhattan's Kenny Minor missed a driving layup as time expired, the Jacks seemed poised to pull a neutral-court upset in front of their 2,083 boisterous fans.

"We dug ourselves a hole, and we almost got out of it," said Cadwell, who finished with a game-high 25 points and four 3-pointers.

Instead Anderson, a 6-foot-6 swingman who earned a score of freshman All-American honors a year ago, took center stage. He followed a three-point play two minutes later by yanking down a rebound in traffic and putting it back in to give the Jaspers a five-point cushion.

Anderson had a game-high 16 rebounds. Forward Arturo Dubois also snagged 12 as the Jaspers outrebounded SDSU 39-35.

Still, SDSU didn't fold. Redshirt freshman Cadwell and juniors Eric Heien and Ben Beran each buried 3-pointers that continued to keep it a one-possession game into the waning seconds.

But Manhattan guard Jason Wingate, a senior captain, was 6-for-6 at the free-throw line in the final minute. The Jaspers were 9-of-9 from the stripe in overtime.

"We play our tails off. We just don't execute when the times comes when we need to execute plays," said Beran, who finished with 11 points but was held without a field goal until 1:06 remained in the second half. "Down the stretch, we just didn't finish the game the way we should have."

Manhattan coach Bobby Gonzalez compared the game to a Big East or Big Ten slugfest rather than one between his burgeoning mid-major program and an SDSU team that is just two seasons removed from Division II.

"It was a great college basketball game," said Gonzalez, his hands still shaking 15 minutes after the final horn. "Winning a game on the road in college basketball, there's no easy games. ... This game was tremendous for us."

Despite playing a home game in an unfamiliar arena, SDSU shot nearly 45 percent from the floor, including an 8-for-17 effort from beyond the arc. Redshirt freshman Andre Gilbert had 17 points and junior Mohmaed Berte managed 10 points and 10 rebounds.

However, the Jackrabbits committed 23 turnovers, eight of them by Gilbert. Three of SDSU's miscues came in overtime, including one with 49 seconds left that sailed out of bounds into the incredulous Jacks' coaching staff.

"There were some turnovers that just boggled my mind," Nagy said. "They're going to be sick tomorrow when they watch the film."

There's little time to dwell for Nagy's bunch, which travels to Minneapolis later this week for a Friday game with the University of Minnesota. The Gophers, a Big Ten team that made the NCAA Tournament last year, are the last remaining marquee opponent on the SDSU's schedule.

"We're not afraid of anybody," Gilbert said. "We've played against big universities."

I, a SF resident, was at the game as well.  I and the 3 others I was with had an absolute blast at this game, so I don't feel like posting anything negative today.

The team showed much improvement from the UW-M game I was at.  Still young, but I do see potential now.

Thought the crowd was great, actually better than I expected.  I do think we lost a lot of the Sioux Falls basketball crowd tonight to boys rivalry night here in town, Rosey vs O'G, Washington vs Lincoln, and Yankton vs Brandon Valley.

I do think there were a lot of SF people at the game.  Evidence I have to support that is that a lot of people weren't sure about standing for the school song, and some weren't really ready to get into the game vocally until it got close at the end.  I think there were a lot of Sioux Falls people out there just feeling this Division I thing out.

I have to say I was disappointed with the game, once again. Despite the score and how it may have sounded on the radio, it was not pretty. I brought a couple friends-not State fans-to the game, and I don’t know if they will come back to another. The reason the crowd seemed subdued until the last couple minutes is because there wasn’t much to get excited about until then. :P A couple dunks, and that’s it.

I would say the final 4 minutes of regulation were some of the most entertaining and exciting I’ve seen in awhile. Big shots kept falling, and I was hoping for an outcome like Denver.

We were helped out a ton by the officials. They were young, does anyone know where they came from? I would be upset with the officiating if I was a Manhatten fan. And I would already be in a surly mood, what with the whole public transit thing going on out there. ;D

Missing free throws hurt, but if we do some other things right, we still win the game. We did not sub enough in the second half, and our body language showed it (hands on knees, open mouths gasping for air). We had our best team on the floor the whole second half, but we can’t use media timeouts for rest instead of substitutions. Loney didn’t produce much in the second half because he did not play much. :-/ In my humble opinion, we need to play 7-8 players, using the bottom 2 to steal minutes of rest for the top 6.

I’m surprised no one is talking about our scoring drought. I think we went the first 7-8 minutes of the second half without scoring.

Overtime is a new game, and we did not play well. Gilbert made two terrible decisions driving into traffic, and then a turnover. Eight turnovers in a college basketball game is too many for one player. Take away eight possessions from Manhatten, and it is a different outcome. He may be the future of the program, but he is losing games in the present. Get him out of the game, calm him down, and get him back in. Not to pile on, but did anyone else notice almost every time Dre made a mistake he was grabbing a different part of his body like he was hurt? And then miraculously he would recover on the very next play.

Once again, last night some players are allowed to make mistake after mistake, and Kleinjan was pulled after one mistake, never to return. What happened to Mac, who showed some promise earlier in the season? Don’t tell me he can’t keep up or he is too small. Did you see Minor?

I don’t think we have to look for a day when better athletes are going to arrive. I was not impressed with Manhatten athletically at all. Our athleticism was as good if not better than the Jaspers, with two thunderous dunks and forcing 17 turnovers.

Did anyone else think Coach Nagy seemed out of the game? Usually he is up and down all night long, but last night he sat with his chin in his hand until about the last 3 minutes of the game. :-/ It looked like he had the flu. He got outcoached (and that doesn’t happen often) by the Manhatten coach who was always talking to his players and the officials. It seemed we had a different approach to this game by playing 5 guys a ton, unlike the last 2 games we won with a more balanced approach.

This was a game we should have won. I don’t think Manhatten will be too eager to come back to SD anytime soon.
“I used to be with it. But then they changed what it was. Now what I’m with isn’t it, and what’s it seems scary and wierd. It’ll happen to you.” — Abe Simpson

I thought the crowd was very much into the game. Was the first 7 minutes brutal from an offense perspective absolutely, but I thought the defense on both sides was tremendous forcing tough shots and making the game look ugly. I'm not sure what game you were watching, but IMHO and those around me thought the Jaspers were getting the benefit of the majority of the calls as their coached moaned about every call and deserved a technical long before he got one. I thought the Jaspers were much more athletic than the Jacks, but we played hard and overachieved. I agree with your sentiments on Gilbert, but as I stated before he is just a freshman and is our most athletic player and has to be on the floor. Andy Kleinjan IMHO is just not quick enough to be on the floor for extended minutes. He could be a real asset if he could come in and consistently knock down some long jumpshots, but that is not happening. You seem to have a real love affair with the South Dakota kids which is fine, however I don't really care where they come from as long as they are productive or showing improvement. It became clear we needed Frias on the floor for defense and his quickness bringing the ball up the floor. Overall I had hoped Frias would be bringing more to us by this point . The biggest dissapointment for me this year is Ben Beran who needs to provide more rebounding a post presence on offense. This is his third year in the program and don't feel he is living up to his or the coaching staffs expectations.

Great thinking coach....when Nagys job opens up make sure you apply. I think with the knowledge you posted we could be undefeated right now. :-X

I talked to plenty non-SDSU fans after the game last night that were elated with the game. Couldnt wait to see some more. Maybe that is because they went into the game understanding that the Jacks are new to this Div. and mistakes take time to fix. They didnt go in to the game with a pen and clipboard to deciphere everything wrong rather to enjoy it for what it is worth!
