Cadwell Scores 34 But Jacks Fall In Overtime

MURFREESBORO, TN – Tim Blue hit four free throws in the last minute as Middle Tennessee State held off South Dakota State 89-82 in overtime Monday night.
Adam Vogelsberg led five MTSU players in double figures with a career high 25 points, hitting his last 13 free throw attempts after missing his first attempt. Vogelsberg, a 6-1 junior guard, scored 22 after halftime.
Blue added 20 points to complete a double-double with 11 rebounds. And three players had 12 points each: Kyle Young, Kevin Kanaskie and Fats Cuyler. MTSU is now 13-10 for the season
Matt Cadwell scored a career high 34 points to lead the Jacks while Ben Beran had 19 and Michael Loney 10. Beran also led the Jacks on the boards with eight.
Cadwell tied the SDSU record for points by a freshman by shooting 10-for-17 from the field including 6-of-8 on three-point shots and 8-for-9 at the foul line. He also had five rebounds and two assists, and played all 45 minutes.
Austin Hansen scored 34 against Augustana as a freshman in 2000 to set the record.
SDSU started the game with a 7-0 lead when Cadwell hit two baskets, including a three, and Loney one basket. After Middle Tennessee tied the game at 21, Chris Wagner scored to put the Jacks back in the lead. When Beran scored in the closing seconds of the half, the Jacks had a 35-26 lead at intermission.
MTSU, a member of the Sun Belt Conference, appeared to take charge when Vogelsberg broke a 66-66 tie with back-to-back three-pointers, but the Jacks came back, tied the game at 63 on a three by Cadwell and took the lead on a three by Loney.
The Jacks went ahead 71-70 on a pair of free throws by Beran. MTSU tied it at 71 when Fats Cuyler hit the second of a two-shot free throw. But SDSU did not get a shot off in the closing 25 seconds.
In the overtime, SDSU had its only lead at 80-79 following a three-pointer by Cadwell. Cuyler scored on a drive and Vogelsberg hit two free throws to put MTSU up 83-80. After Beran scored for the Jacks, the Blue Raiders scored the last six points of the game.
SDSU out-shot Middle Tennessee 46 per cent (29-of-62) to 38 per cent (27-of-70) but the Blue Raiders were 26-of-32 at the foul line while SDSU made 15-of-20. Each team had nine three-pointers. SDSU out-shot MTSU 60 per cent (14x23) to 32 per cent (10x31) in the first half.
SDSU had a 22-11 rebounding advantage at halftime, but was beaten on the boards 46-36 for the game. MTSU had 19 offensive rebounds. And the Jacks had 17 turnovers, three more than MTSU.
