Re: Why we'll be better next year....

Has anyone heard if Jared Vlastuin has shown interest in joining the basketball team. I'm not sure how his track exploits are going?

Jared may have torn his ACL(or at least something with his knee) during a track meet in California a couple weeks ago. I do not believe we will see him on the basketball team, but I could be wrong.

Why don't you just make that your signature. It would save you a lot of typing, and then you could actually contribute to discussions of men's basketball.

Certainly he will compete for the spot and may be the primary competitor because I believe White and our current guards will be better when they are not at the point. I too believe Palarca will be tough this fall...he got behind last year when he was injured and I think he was just beginning to come strong at the end. Regardless, if Wolter can play at the level of this year's schedule, won't it be awesome to have two true point guards available!!
I agree with you Jacks#1Fan...and don't you think that Nagy's comments might motivate Palarca to work a little harder over the summer to prepare for next year. There is nothing better as a motivator than inner-competition within the team for playing time.

I wouldn't read into the comments that much. Coach Nagy knows he is going to be able to rotate a lot of players in and out of the line ups next year. A lot of minutes for everyone to share.

Has anyone heard how Anthony Davis is doing, and is he offically done with basketball?
This has certainly been unfortunate for this young man.

According to people "on the inside", he won't be playing basketball again unless some kind of miracle occurs. The medical condition he suffers from generally doesn't just go away and rarely gets much better. Its my understanding that his scholarship will go to Brayden Carlson. Anthony will still get the same financial support the scholarship would have provided to continue his education.

I was looking at the roster and last year we had 17 players, including players sitting out due to transfers, redshirts and medical issues. We lose McKensie and Wipf and add White, Feigen, Wolters and Carlson. If everyone else stays, including Davis, we will have 19 players on the roster.

I guess the days of the football players filling out the roster are over.

                        19....

Selken and DeBoer are practice players....down to 17. Tivis is a 20/20 guy....down to 16. From what jackmd says (a reliable source) Davis is pretty much done....down to 15. Carlson will redshirt....down to 14.

What is the limit for travel? 14? 15?

Now you have to get into the process of who's gonna play? My 2 cents....

                        Outside:
Callahan20 6'1 and Sargent 6'4 obviously grab alot of minutes.
After these two the next starting spot could be up for grabs.
Moss 6'4 - is a guy who can do alot of things and play alot of positions. I like his energy and athleticism off the bench though.
Wolters 6'3 - obviously has some sort of indication that he'll play early and often here. He might not start but I could see him playing alot of minutes, if not sooner than later.
White 6'7 - is a kid who could also play the 2, 3 or maybe even 1. Obviously if the staff doesn't redshirt him they think he's good enough to help and he won't be left stuck on the bench.
Callahan33 6'4 - is kind of on the fence. I think he's a guy who could really help and fill it up from othe outside. We'll see what kind of summer he has. Helpful to him is his brother knows what it takes to be successful at this level.
Palarca 5'10 - is steady, but unspectacular. He is a solid defender and runs the team well, but you wonder if Wolters comes in, does those things well enough and scores and creates so much better that Palarca is kind of the odd man out. And, if Moss or White is also capable of running the point it's probably not good news for Mike.

                        Inside:
Kai 6'6 - probably plays alot of the 4 position.
Cordova 6'7 - obviously plays the 4 as well.
Fiegen 6'8 - will be thrown into the mix due to a lack of bigs, hopefully he beefs up a little this summer.
Rader 6'8 - is supposed to be more of a 3 but someone on here said he's being groomed to be a 4. If that's the case and he can handle it, we'll have some real athletic bigs and some (Kai and Rader and eventually Fiegen and sometimes even Engen) can step out and drop a trey. Rader and Kai and possibly even Fiegen could be a pose real matchup issues w/ some teams who have the "old school" big men.
Cassaday 6'6 - if he put on some more bulk could be a good blue-collar guy who does a little bit of everything and could end up being a solid rebounder.
Engen 6'10 - steals a few minutes here and there. If he's improved enough to play even as well as he did at ORU he could be a decent bench guy.
Pederson at 6'8/205 is more of an outside player. I don't know much about this kid other than his numbers from USF as a true, which were pretty good. I would be bulking this kid up and trying to develop him into another athletic inside player.

Alot of questions to be answered. We'll see what the offseason brings. Cordova and Moss improved so much in their first offseason, who will be next? How will the newcomers (Wolters, White, Fiegen, Rader, Pederson) pan out and if they do, how soon will they pan out?

Good analysis here. Rep points. With this many players fighting for roster/starting/playing time there is always one really good surprise. My nomination: Cassaday. Limited PT this year but he struck me as a hard worker, and once a player like that sees what is necessary by playing, they tend to focus in on a goal. Go Jacks.

The only thing I would disagree with is Cassaday putting on more bulk. I actually think he needs to work on foot speed (esp. for defense). Seemed like he grabbed a lot while playing defense and got fouls pretty quick. He is aggressive to the basket and the foot speed would only improve this. As for Kai and Anthony, both will play forwards, since we won't be playing with a true center.

Despite being an inch or two short, AC is the most logical post. He can score with his back to the basket. He's tough, smooth and quick enough. I see Engren backing him up, perhaps with help from Cassaday and Pederson. There's a log jam of talent at the 4, 3 and 2 positions, which is a good problem to have. Competition for time at point will be the biggest battle. The edge has got to go to the guy who can get the ball down the court without turning it over. TOs have been a game killer the last few years.

The one thing you have to like is there are a bunch of people on the team who are capable of taking the ball down the court. You could have 3 point/shooting guards on the court at one time plus some forwards capable of handling the ball too. Quite versatile team. Just have to keep their heads in the game and not have a lapse (don't let one bad pass start a tidal wave of TO's).
