Re: Why we'll be better next year....

SDSU may lose to Oakland at Frost. Maybe.

Other than that, I expect Frost to resume its status as 'best home court in the conference' after a few years hiatus from the NCC days.

Frost was pretty weak when i was there in February for the Bison matchup.

It will never beat the Mabee Center in Tulsa.

Won't be next year. Ask anyone who was at the Oakland doubleheader about Frost.

Are you talking about the place where 'attendance' isn't the same as 'people at the game'?

Oakland has the best home court in the Summit, they play in a smallish arena and have a very dedicated student body. NDSU, SDSU, and ORU might all be tied for second, all can have great atmopsheres for big games but can be a bit lacking for other games.

Interesting. How many of the Summit venues have you actually been to?

A few, I haven't been to ORU and Oakland though, but I have seen enough of their games on TV to get a good idea. ORU must have had almost every home game on TV and Oakland has their fair share as well if you count channelsurfing. Scotty Miller also had some good things to say about Oakland's arena, their student section does seem pretty active most of the time.

Never is a very long time. The Jacks will be better, maybe a lot better, and a deep tradition like what we have is easier to revive than to start from scratch.

Put a good product on the floor in Frost and the crowd will get into it. SDSU fans haven't forgotten how to cheer at basketball games, they just haven't had much cause, at least on the men's side. Ask some of the opponents of the SDSU women who've come to Frost lately. (It is true that the weekday game crowds are IMHO disappointing, vs. the weekend crowds. Something for the athletic dept. to work on in the future.)

I remember the USC women's coach talking about Frost a few years ago. He said everyone told him he was crazy to play a road game at Frost b/c everyone told him the crowd was great, etc. USC came up, lost handily I believe and said they'll never come back

All the men need to do is start winning games.....

I did say you guys were tied with NDSU and ORU, that's not bad company to be keeping. I would like to attend an Oakland to see if it meets the hype though, not sure if I want to go up there an watch them play NDSU next year though.

To put things into perspective a WIU player actually turned to Ben Woodside and told him during our game this year that it must be amazing to play in front of this kind of crowd. Once you get past Oakland, NDSU, SDSU, and ORU things get kind of sad, really said actually, I know at one point Saul said if you play in the Summit one thing you need to adjust to is playing in front of lifeless crowds.

The only time the word crowd comes into play is when SDSU, ORU, and Oakland is being talked about. Timmy Miles would actually strategize as to how he could help take your crowd out of play, so I know it can get loud at Frost.

Is this the same Mabee Center I saw SDSU almost beat ORU on last year in front of several HUNDRED ho-hum fans?

ORU has experienced success, early and often. They've had great coaches, great players, have been to the Sweet 16 and won many conference titles. If darn near ANY team in the country had a perrenial confrence champion on the floor w/ a proud history they would get a nice crowd. We already know people will show up at Frost if a winner is on the floor.

WHEN State starts experiencing success again, starts competing for the conference title, competing for a shot at the Big Dance, continues to develop rivals in the Summit, people start becoming more knowledgable and comfortable with the Summit and we bring back old rivals like me-too-U and UND, Frost will fill up. I think it's going to start this year!

What I saw when I went to the O'Rena was a small but very loud group of hard-core student fans, a loud school band seated about five feet from the end of the visitor's bench, and a somewhat more than half-empty arena. It's basically the bottom half of Frost Arena, going up a few rows higher than that, perhaps.

IMHO the crowds in the BSA for the SDSU games were much better overall, although Oakland's students were good . . . just weren't a lot of them.

I think most of us (even the NDSU folks) are a bit spoiled with the level of support our teams get. Heck, SDSU's men had better fan support the past few years--even as much as they've struggled--than anybody but NDSU, ORU, and OU, from what I saw in person at the arenas, and what I've seen and heard from the webcasts. Southern Utah is the other one who had a really decent, consistent turnout IMHO. I think WIU would turn out for a competitive team, but their facility is basically a BSA without the modern amenities <grin>.

UMKC is hopeless right now but when they were competitive could put 4-5,000 in Municipal Auditorium, which is probably the lower limit of a really fun crowd in that building. They're talking about playing their games on-campus in a crackerbox little gym. Speaking of crackerbox gyms, IUPUI wants to move their games to Conseco Fieldhouse--I'm not entirely sure that's a good idea, because they'll need to get at least 5k to make that place a good basketball atmosphere, but we'll see.

It wouldn't take many people at all to make Centenary's GoldDome a real snakepit--it's small. Real small. Who'd I miss. Oh, yeah, IPFW, they play in a cavernous, 12,000 seat hockey arena, where a decent crowd of even 3,000 would be hard-pressed to get the joint rocking.

That's how I see the Summit League venues.

I'll bring this back to topic. I'm excited about this recruiting class, but the biggest thing for next year is going to be the improvement of the existing players. All of them need to improve their game for this team to move from the bottom half to the top half of the league. What are their plans for the summer?

The thing about IUPUI and UMKC both is they need to have a little bit better on campus venue.... IUPUI's venue is smaller than my high school gym.... I think that moving to the fieldhouse could be a good idea for them because they need to be exposed they had some really good players on that team and Indiana supports basketball I just think they need to be exposed. Go to the field house get some more exposure and try to get more of a following for your program.... UMKC just needs help right now.... both mens and womens program seem to have problems both on and off the court...

That's probably as a good breakdown as I have seen regarding Summit League venues. I did kind of forget about SUU, they are ok as well. Its a shame that IPFW, IUPUI, WIU, and UMKC can't get something like Oakland has built, I have no idea as to what IUPUI is thinking by wanting to play in an NBA arena. You can put 4k in there and it would be empty feeling, that is the number one reason why NDSU won't play in the dome.
