I think a lot of people have problems with what could be termed the not so up-and-up side of AAU teams. Not all by any means, but a few individuals have given AAU (is there such a thing anymore?) coaches a bad name to a lot of folks.
Maryland's coach basically refuses to deal with them. Calipari from Memphis--now Kentucky--has some rather famous dealings with them and their shady hangers on (anybody heard of World Wide Wes?). Both of these situations have been well documented in the media, along with some dealings of the UCONN basketball program.
The problem with Summer coaches, IMO, is when they abuse their role as coach and drift too far into guidance counselor. I don't think a summer coach can "force" a kid to go to a school. But they sure as heck can make a kid decide NOT to go to a school with a comment or two--regardless if that's best for the kid.
I hope and believe that the Dakota Schoolers represent the cleaner, softer side of summer basketball. Kids get to have fun and travel, fine-tune and expose their skills to college coaches. Their coach certainly seems to be very knowledgeable of local high school talent and the inner workings of many basketball programs, including those at NDSU and SDSU.

I know I will get in trouble for this but I know for a fact that Black Hills State has a player because he got in a rift with the schoolers.... He has told me personally, that after he got into an argument and said he wouldn't play no longer with them his recruitment dried up over night..... The kid was DAC player of the year and was a 2nd team all-american (many argue he should of been 1st)....
That is my problem with AAU teams and summer club teams is yes they can help kids but if they just don't get along with them and the coach or guy running the team doesn't like the player he can seriously hurt his recruiting...
I have no doubt that player wants to believe that, but that is an excuse that sounds good over a beer. There were reasons he did not get recruited and there were reasons he did not play for the Schoolers again. There is no point in hashing them out here. He has a good career now and he is at a school that was a good fit. All is good for everyone involved now. The Dakota Schoolers did not hurt his recruitment and neither did Paul Seville. That player is someplace that has worked out for him and with a coach that can help him become a better player than other college coaches thought he could be.

Yeah, I once new this kid his last name was George something. He got hosed in his recruiting too but by his high school coach. He ended up getting a ride though when his coach got hired to coach a college team.
I tend to agree with Patkran on this one. If a kid has talent and work ethic he will find his way to offers without a summer coach. the Uncle Rico thing doesn't work for me any more.

Ah, "All the Right Moves"...classic movie reference to a time before Tom Cruise went insane.
I'm going to laugh at that one.... but I think some people don't understand it to the full extent.... just my opinion, I think in general what the schoolers do is a good thing and I'm fine with our best player getting in an argument with the schoolers if thats what it took to get him here....
JoeBoo....once again, not worth my time to respond to your ramblings only to state that you are once again incorrect.

if someone can help me out I'm almost certain Ben DeWaard was part of the program for a year if I'm not mistaken and Mike Steffen suited up for a game as well. If my addition is correct that is 9-11 athletes who have worn the SDSU jersey since 1998.
Yes it's true that USD had a run on athletes from the program in the mid 2000's. Basically due to friendships formed and recruiting needs. Athletes make their own decisions and any advice given is no different than the advice received from HS coaches or friends of the family.
Recruiting is based on ability of the athlete and not any magical words by members of the Schooler program. College coaches get paid to make decisions and lose jobs over poor recruiting...no one is taking a kid because of any alliance or friendships...that point is very difficult for many to understand. If the kid has talent, the kid gets offers....if the kid receives little exposure then there are limited offers.....the nature of recruiting is that it's heavy in the summer months and lighter in the winter. The kids that go High Major DI go simply because they are more talented than those who go smaller DI, DII or NAIA. I can't stress that point enough and is seldom misunderstood.
Anyways, thanks for the kind words from those who offered them. We appreciate the support and will only state that the Schooler program strive to provide a quality program and experience for our athletes and families involved in the program. Thankfully through the years we have been able to meet or exceed that goal. Like everything else in life you can't please everyone but you can always give it 100% effort.

You are correct.
Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!--Bluto--
