  • 2009 Dakota Schoolers

The 2009 Dakota Schoolers rosters are out. The 17U team includes verbal commitment Zach Horstman from Winner. He had a great year as a sophomore putting in 50+ points against state runner-up Platte-Geddes. I look for him to be a second or third team all state this year. The roster also includes some other interesting players including the trio from Roosevelt, Trevor Gruis from Ellsworth, and others. I know Cadsev has had good things to say about Adol Aluong from Roosevelt in the past. It is unfortunate that he essentially lost his junior year to injures. I hope he has a good summer. I wonder if we are seriously looking at any of the other players on the team. I see that Nick Nagy a 5'10" sophomore to be from Brookings is on the 15U team. This has got to be coach Nagy's son.

Schoolers are pretty pro-USD with Mueller and Beggeman running the show, right? The other guy that runs them, Paul-something, is also a High School ref. That just doesn't seem right.

The Dakota Schoolers were formed by, and are run by, Paul Seville. I have no idea what you are talking about when you say "pro-USD". The boys varsity team is currently coached by Kent Mueller. Their roster has included Fiegen and White, Brayden Carlson, and Zach Horstman, as well as other through the years that have attended SDSU. The team is selected and funded by Paul. There is a history of the team at their website.

What "doesn't seem right" about a private individual giving kids a chance to expose their talents to coaches across the country, and have a great experience, and great fun, in the meantime? Paul has expanded the program to younger kids and girls as well. Pete Egstad, the girls head coach, is coach at Baltic and a graduate of Moorhead State.

Good points. I think Mr. Seville is interested in developing each individual into the best athlete and helping them find their way to a scholarship at SDSU or USD and other places as well. I dont believe Seville has any preference, but the best choice for the individual young person where ever that leads to.

Just seems that the majority of the Schoolers have gone to USD. I know Hanson and Cordova and I believe Steffen were Schoolers, though, so who knows?

The part that doesn't seem right is IF Paul is officiating Schoolers players in their High School games. I'll assume he recuses himself from such games.

I know the Schoolers have a proud past and have held there own in some of the big AAU tourneys like Vegas, KC, etc. Wasn't it some 5 or so years ago that they made it to the Championship game of one of the biggest AAU tournies in the country? No disrespect to the Schoolers at all. IMO, AAU is huge, especially for South Dakota kids. Good players from here often aren't taken as serious b/c they're doing it in a area that doesn't boast alot of D1 talent. Playing AAU in the summer allows them to go up against premier competetion, improve their game and gives them a chance to prove themselves.

The majority have not gone to USD. Schoolers have gone onto a wide variety of schools and in different sports (with most of them going onto basketball).

Exactly. Paul is a quality guy who is genuinely interested in helping these kids advance thier basketball skills and showcase those skills to colleges and universities across the country.

My wife used to work with Paul and she said that he regularly would get off the phone and she would ask who he was talking to. "Oh, that was Billy Donovan, the basketball coach at Florida." He has interaction with a lot of coaches from big time programs, small programs and everything in between.

Although many of his players end up in the region, his players do get exposure to big time programs as well. When the situation and the talent warrants consideration (ie: Mike Miller to Floriga, Joe Krabbenhoft to Wisconsin) his players get opportunities to sign with big time programs.

I know Paul probably makes his mistakes but he genuinely cares about the players on his team and wants to promote their basketball careers, no matter what level of college basketball thier talent and physical measureables translate to.

According to the website, 9 Schoolers have gone on to play at basketball USD and 6 have gone to play basketball at SDSU.

I guess I don't see the big deal. Paul Seville is a frequent contributor on this board and it's clear to me that he's just interested in helping these kids find a scholarship and find the right place where they can be successful. I think it's a great program. I'd be thrilled if my kid ever had the opportunity to participate in it.

It's not a big deal. As I stated, I think the Schoolers and AAU are the best thing to happen to High School kids in places like South Dakota. Growing up I didn't have AAU in the summer and it limited me as a player and also the number of offers I recieved.

Four current Schoolers are future Jacks (White, Fiegen, Carlson and Horstmann).

                          Also....looking at their 2009 roster;

They have Newton, Gruis and Aloung in the same class (senior) as Cody Larson. That's not right is it?

                          What is Newton hearing?

Isn't Gruis getting looks from Missouri Valley and Big Ten?

They will all be rising seniors this summer....so it is correct.

I am curious as to whether the Schoolers have measured the kids' heights for this upcoming season or if the kids just reported their heights?... for I noticed both Cody Larson and Zach Kraning both went from 6'8" to 6'9".
