They did the thing on the scoreboard where there's a picture of a heart, then they put couples on the screen urging them to kiss. I think they usually do this at most Twins games. Just thought I'd clarify for everyone.

Totally agree with this. Boys and girls are high school teams.

So I consider calling the men's team the 'guys', as in 'if the guys can win one tonight....' to be equivalent to calling the women's team the 'girls'. It's an affectionate reference, not a negative reference.

It -is- true that 'girls' is also the equivalent of 'boys', however, I trust that context makes it quite clear that I respect these players as adults, and that I am not juvenalizing them.
The point is by law and the lawyers can back this up, after age 18, gender reference will generally be men and women. I just think especially our current SDSU women's team deserves the respect of being referred to as women, and not girls.

This off topic, and to get back on I want a sweep of the men's remaining three games. It can be done.

Yep, if anything good came of SUU beating NDSU it was that it proved NDSU can be beat up there.

Sorry. Not a lawyer, and I'm going to continue calling them 'girls' in the same way I call my 29 year old and 22 year old sisters 'girls', and for the same reason.

For Karen: Did the team make you and your family special sweatshirts & such with both Griff and Garrett's numbers on them? Everyone else just gets the one sweatshirt with the one number on it.....

Kai's girlfriend had them made for Kai and I had asked Kai's mom about them. I had both of the guys put on both shirts. We are equally proud of both of them and what they are accomplishing, as we are with all of our kids. It's a great investment!!!

                          Hmmm.

The parents/family of the WBB team all have black sweatshirts with the numbers of 'their' player on them. I figured that was an athletic department thing. Maybe not.... If not, it should be.

The athletic department wouldn't be able to provide this. It would be considered an "extra benefit" by the NCAA.

My guess is that they would if they could, compliance issues. seems silly, but it is the NCAA we are talking about. I should also say that I have no idea if it really would be a compliance issue.

It's a matter of respect in this instance, not law. These aren't your sisters we're referring to here. Calling the men's basketball players "boys" diminishes them, suggesting they're small and weaker than "men". Same with the women.

Most newspapers agree with the AP stylebook which says that girl is acceptable until the age of 18 is reached. Then, young woman or woman is preferable. It's a matter of respect. Girl is a diminutive term, particularly when used by older people to refer to younger women.
