    Re: UNI Game Thread

Boy, sounds like amajor regression tonight. I did not get to hear any of today's game, but it sounds like they fell into the "5 guys each playing a position" as opposed to playing as a team again. I that they had gottenover that. Hopefully it is a one game set back.

Well he didn't play today because of an injury and yes he could very well have helped us to 4 or 5 games last year. I will ask again. Is this year's team better then last year's team? I say yes and I think next year's team will be better then this year's team and I think it will be better then the '07-'08 team.

I disagree that this years team is better than last. We lost two strong rebounders and guys who could score in the paint in Beran and Berte. With the exception of Cordova we have no inside post play to speak of and are relagated to a perimiter shooting team which is why the poor shooting percentages. We also don't finish well when we do get easy shots. I think a true center would help Kai's play as well.

Being a perimeter shooting team doesn't excuse the poor shooting in the first half of the UNI game.

I do agree that there is a tendency to drop the ball on easy shots. The ORU game was littered with them.

          ---

But, IMO, what kills the Jacks is a lack of ball movement.

This is NOT a team that is going to be able to =out play= a good D-1 team, but it is a team that (potentially) can =out think= a good D-1 team.

Spread the floor, move the ball, set good screens, draw defenders, etc.

          ---

When the Jacks get in a hole, I think, each player seems to feel obligated to make up the difference himself. I would like to see the number of assists credited when the Jacks are down by 3, 5, 10, 15, etc.

I think they end up hurting themselves by taking a bad shot and giving up a defensive rebound, or at the very least ending up with a second chance shot that (if nothing else) takes more time off the clock than a single well-executed offensive set would.

I listened to the game.... as a baseball guy it just reminded me of one of those games where you loose 15-1, you can't throw strikes, when you do the ump don't call them or they hit a bomb..... just a bad game all around.... will have to come back and do better against Iowa State..... Sometimes these are better then the 5 point losses, because you know you did bad and look at the whole game not just a few plays.... The team just shot bad, was settling for to many strait jump shots.... needs to penetrate more and then you get good jump shots....

Some program has to be third, right? I would say in SDSU's case it would be apparent it would be men's basketball in transition to D-I. Football plays in lower two-thirds of D-I, not the entire ocean; and in our case, women's basketball was in far better shape to go D-I, given coming off a national championship. I'm not saying I like it...but I understand it.

The players are getting tired of Nagy yelling at them. They say they are scared to make a mistake, as they will be pulled and yelled at, not coached. Nagy's tirades have to stop! Benching kids is for junior high, not this level.

Coaching is for practice, execution is for games. Man you kids have gotten thin skins. Pamper, Pamper, Pamper, your on scholarship, deal with it. I'm going to ask again because you are point blank asking me too...who are THEY? Don't say it if you can not confirm it.

Benching kids happens at every level. If a kid isn't producing, they should get benched, IMHO.

I'm with you. If a player can't accept proper consequences when not meeting expectations than I don't want that player. Too many students/athletes/employees want to know what the coach, school, workplace etc... can do for them. Not enough young people approach life with the attitude "what can I DO TO MAKE MYSELF AND THE PEOPLE AROUND ME better". I see it all the time and its just plain selfish. Give 110%, always try to get better, when you fail accept the fact that you failed and make changes to prevent the same failure in the future. It starts with you as an individual.

Bingo. I think some of us are looking for a potted plant to be the coach so that we can then complain that he earns too much money. I don't think the players are complaining nor are they feeling that their ego was stepped on by Coach Nagy. Its a fast paced games, plays and schemes change quickly, and how is Coach Nagy suppose to commicate? By sign language? Give the coach a break. I for one have been hard on him for other reasons, but this one time I think he needs to be defended. The next guy if there is one, is not going to find things easy. Will yell at his players? I would hope so.

I don't have a problem with Coach Nagy yelling out plays or schemes. And there are definitely times when a leader needs to yell at those following him or her. However, if you yell all the time, eventually you get results--or the people you're yelling at just tune you out (now you're not leading, you're just some guy who talks loud).

Coach Nagy himself (and many posters on this board) has repeatedly stated that this team lacks confidence... in your face coaching does not build confidence, IMO.

Yelling creates a sense of urgency, which is great for defense and rebounding (and we are relatively good at those things). A sense of urgency is a very bad thing when trying to hit jump shots, free throws, or an closely guarded teammate cutting to the basket...

As for the "these kids are on scholarship, they should be able to take it" attitude many posters seem to have, ask yourself if you would do manual labor for roughly $10 an hour while being berated publicly 2-3 times per week. A full scholarship is a wonderful opportunity for those that can earn it, but don't kid yourself into thinking that they don't earn every penny.

JackMD, how do you think most surgeons would fare in surgery if their boss was standing in the corner of the OR yelling and stomping his feet? Do you suppose most surgeons (who are some of the most confident people in the universe) would perform under those circumstances? And surgeons are mature adults making 6 figure salaries... not teenagers making the equivalent of $10 an hour.

Yes the kids need tough skin to play on this level, but at some point the coaching staff needs to build some confidence in these individuals, and that is not done by yelling.
