Give Nagy credit for doing more than talking about the need for change. He implemented surprising changes in the starting lineup. The changes might have been short term and more symbolic than substantive. But, hey, whatever works. Great game, Jacks.

About the only button Nagy has left to push is starting Wipf.

At some point, the players need to own their own effort. Good and bad.

      Tonight, was good.

Just back from the game and just shake my head at some of the posts. Jack Power, JacksFroshFan and NoHopRebounds started out with caustic posts re Nagy's decision on the starting lineup (guess NoHop won't be at any more games according to his post).

Then when we do win, its because we were playing a "very bad team". So just how bad were they: We beat them by 21 points (and were up 33 points before bringing out the end of the bench). Well, they lost to University of Pacific by 4 points (current Sagarin rating 135...out of 347 teams); lost to San Diego (Sagarin 147) by 12; lost to Air Force (Sagarin 157) by 8 points, and got beat by Cal State Fullerton (Sagarin 167) by 23 points, the only game of those four to exceed our 21.

So maybe nobody needs to eat crow, but I can tell you one thing...there is no way the coaches or the players can win with some of the posters. JP may be thrilled about a blowout, but sure isn't going to give any of the credit to Nagy...while if the team doesn't show up, it is the coaches fault. In my opinion...lots of bad logic. Can't we just celebrate the moment without hedging all the time? Wouldn't want to give somebody credit when they perform, because they might not perform next time?

From me: thanks Jacks and coaches, for a dominating performance against a team that wasn't all that bad (some of you may have been in Louisville with me when Cal State Bakersfield won the national DII championship...we lost out in the first round). I'm proud of you and your performance tonight and hope you can use it to get your morale up for a very tough two games on the road against Northern Iowa (Sagarin 187) and Iowa State (Sagarin 133).

I don't mind seeing Palarca out there. Not much difference between he and Mackenzie. The other two are just kinda odd. Engen didn't even see the floor against Denver. Tivis, 2 minutes. Weird!?!?

Hopefully we will have 3 angry subs coming in off the bench early wanting to take it out on the Roadrunners.
I think that was the point. Too shake things up for those guys and make um see it from a different light. The game sure looks a lot different when you are coming off the bench when you are use to starting.

So you know better then Nagy does when it comes to motivating this team and getting them a wake up call? Lets leave the second guessing aside. Nagy im guessing was ready to show those starters that if they dont produce no matter how good they should be, if they dont perform they are going to ride the pine for someone who is giving it all. Coach K at Duke has brought guys up from the end of the bench to give them a spark plug and effort to start a game. So i would not just call that a high school tactic. maybe if we see this line up in the NDSU or other big confrence games, we could question it, however something needed to be done and thats what he did.

I'm not going to say that Nagy's actions were intended to 'send a message' to Williams, Sargent, and Casey.

I think it was an attempt to find a starting lineup that works.

You negative guys need to go watch Hoosiers or something. Sometimes what a coach says is what he means.

[edit] Nagy in today's Argus says that it was intended to motivate Williams, etc. So.......

At any rate, the Jacks won convincingly--and need to take that same 'free wheeling' attitude to Iowa. That if they're going to lose to Iowa Teacher's or Iowa State, they're going to lose playing -their- style of play.

I think, in general, this notion of being a "starter" is overblown with trumpeting introductions and flashing spot lights. These novelities are really are good for the crowd, but do little for the participants who have to play the game. I think Nagy should continue the procedure of holding the leaders off the floor to start if it has a relaxing effect and gives the guys a chance to see how it looks from the bench in terms of individual opponent players and how to employ Coach Nagy's strategy. We held this Blake guy to 5 pts so something must have worked. Kai and Sargent both had great games in terms of scoring and rebounding. Not everyone enjoys this win, but I do. Not everyone approves of our current coach, but I do. Etc etc, Lets move on to Iowa for our two games on the road.

"Nagy said that he made the lineup moves to send the message that nobody's job is safe. But in the process, he discovered that the team is inching closer to being deep enough to play the uptempo style that it employed during its Division II heyday."

The second sentence is my favorite part of the Argus Leader story on last night's game. And if I'm not mistaken, Griffan is eligible for the next game against UNI, so this depth will be further enhanced at that point. Nice.

We just ran a team out of Frost Arena. Yeah, they're a transitional D-I team, but they're a counter, and beggars (like the men's program is right now) can't exactly be choosers.

This was a good night. We shall see if it translates into anything more.

Garrett Callahan to the fans: "Thanks for coming!"
JackJD- This relates to your attendance question, too.

There were 1080 people at the game. I listened to Garrett on the ride home and I was really impressed. There weren't any short choppy 2 or 3 word answers. He seemed like he's used to answering questions with well rounded sentences. I'm not good with grammar but hearing some players use 2 word answers to questions gets to me. I like to here the players elaborate so you can really know how they feel. I could listen to him after more games, easily. It is easier to answer the questions after a win though.

I know that the players aren't supposed to read the message boards but I wonder is Garrett does. I was wondering if there would be 750 fans there about 5 minutes before the game. There were High School games and the weather was cold but I expected more. The crowd wasn't really loud either(that could be because it wasn't close). Instead of gripping about who wasn't there Garrett just thanked the people that were there. He said he knew it was cold and he appreciated that they showed up. They were cutting him off but he made sure he got that in.

I don't know if this belongs here or not but I wanted to express my opinion. Garrett has really impressing me this year. He probably has always been like this but I guess I haven't noticed. I do know that this year, he seems to be the leader on the court more than anybody over the last 5 years.

I agree with your mentioning of the attendance before the game. I was there with 24 minutes on the scoreboard before the game started. I think there was only 1 student at the time and 4 in the upper bleacher. Thankfully people showed up within the last 5 minutes of warmups.

As for the starting line-up. I read Nagy's comments regarding Clint will probably keep coming off the bench and Kai will probably rejoin. I don't think this is a slam against Clint. I think Nagy just needed to be able to bring someone off the bench who can shoot. When the starters are Kai, Garrett, Clint, AC, and Casey/Palarca, you don't have an outside shooter coming off the bench. Josh's best game is driving the lane as it is for Dale. It doesn't matter if Clint is on the bench only for the first 2 minutes, you know he is still going to get a lot of minutes and you have a shooter coming in with a little more energy that the other teams starters.

I also listened to Garrett's post game comments. I agree it was nice to hear him thank all the fans. Garrett has a lot of confidence in his shot and he does seem to take on some of the leadership on the court.

I am guessing that fans here need to trust that they'll see a solid effort before they'll mosey out in the cold. They get that spark every time out from the women. I don't fully understand it, myself. I enjoy the whole spectacle of the game... although I admit there have been some spirit-crushing performances by the men over the past few years.

If they keep giving good performances and don't mix in any Denver-type games at home, the fans will return. But the margin of error with fans, it seems to me, is very slim here. Another Denver-like performance, and it'll be hard to get attendance to bounce back. They have to build something with many fans. It's just not automatic for a lot of people I talk to who have suffered through some very bad performances.
                          Holy nutmeg!

I was not able to listen to the game but was happy when I logged on and saw that they won, everyone scored and everyone played if only for a few minutes, more than one or two players rebounded and scored, thats a team effort, there should be no superstars on this team. Just players who want to work together, that equals success.

If a player can play for 20 mins score 14 points and 9 rebounds. What more can you ask for...

Maybe 15 points and 9 rebounds. Just kidding. Kai played a good game. Don't think he picked up a foul until the second half.

One thing I did notice about some of the defense by the Jacks was a lot of jersey grabbing. The refs didn't call them but they have to watch it. Some really lazy fouls made by the Jacks (push fouls on layups, grabbing around picks, etc.).

Tivis for, well, anybody strikes me as kinda weird. Some folks must have had some wildly bad practices since Denver for this to happen.

Engen at the post . . . maybe. He's actually played pretty well lately. Had some good minutes vs. Minnesota. Lets Nagy run his beloved two-post motion offense, if he's so inclined.

Still, as the old saying goes, it's not who's on the floor at the beginning of the game, it's who's on the floor at the end that really counts.

                                It'll be interesting, if true.
