    Re: SWMS tomorrow night

You can't help a broken hand, especially when it has a one and a million chance of happening it the did. Jones' illness had nothing to do with basketball and everything to do with a deer tick. As for ACL's, that is a pretty common sports injury. The athletes go through pretty much a year round conditioning and strength program. A lot of the issues lately have to deal with following dreams or criminal allegations :-X or a mixture of both.

Pretty much right on. Things could not have gone more wrong for SDSU's men's bb program and the ship is still afloat with Nagy as the captain.

First about me, I am a long time reader of this board, and decided today to post a couple of questions to more knowledgeable fans about the basketball team about some concerns me and a couple of my co-workers (SDSU grads) have had about the basketball team.

        1.  I read on this thread that Callahan has broken his hand.  Why are their so many injuries on our basketball team (mens)?  In the last couple of years we have had:  Wenig break a foot, Callahan break a hand, Shantz tear an ACL, Holdren tear an ACL, Jones come down with a weird aliment ending his career, plus a ton of other injuries that I can't even remember.  Does Nagy just run the team hard in practices, leading to these kind of injuries, or have we just been subject to an incredible string of bad luck?  I have brought up a few I remember from the D-II years just to point out how long this string of injuries has lasted.  Most teams lose one or two guys in this same time frame, not the 5-10 that I think I remember.

        2.  Does anybody know anything solid about the new signings we have made?  I really am not trying to bring down anybody, and I will point out before I say anymore that I have no idea about these recruits,  but the signing of two highschool sophomores really troubles me.  Does anybody know about these kids?  I really didn't imagine when we went D-I that we were going to be signing 2 players from the same class in Madison SD.  Most years there isn't a single player in class A that is a legit D-I prospect, but this year there are two of them in the same highschool?  Again, maybe they are, but I don't know how you can even evaluate talent when they are that young.  And this could go either way, I mean, those two could grow another 4-5 inches (I did after my sophomore year) and be some of the best 6,9-6,10 players the state has ever seen.  They could also stop developing this season, and we will have used two scholarships that could be badly needed for unforeseen problems in the future i.e. our guards not developing, more size, etc.  Has anybody seen them play?  Is their upside that great that we risk signing them as sophmores?

Sorry my first post is negative, these are just some questions I had!
1.) Those injuries sound like more like freak accidents (broken hand) and injuries that are prevalent in basketball (ACL injuries). I have had a chance to work with some World Class Athletes who are in excellent physical condition and they still have break bones and tear ACLs. So it is probably just a case of bad luck for the SDSU basketball team.

2.) I asked my dad (former Athletic Director at Madison) about the 2 sophomores at Madison and he said they are very good and Madison "should" have 3 very good seasons in Class A Basketball. Now if these two develop into Div I players is yet to be seen. But let's hope so.

Get the trick-or-treating in early so there is plenty of time to catch some Jack's BB tonight. Definitely going to need the long johns.

Looking for an early struggle but hope to see some glimpses of what might be this year.

might be an interesting concept. good to see SDSU catching up with that place up north when it comes to media coverage. i shouldn't say catching up, but at least committing someone to the jacks. vandrovec was a good writer for the fargo forum.

Yes, interesting, I will try to give it proper attention while listening to the Jacks and trying to manage my family. The girls are pretty excited about Halloween and getting them to bed might be a chore tonight.

                  Re: SWMS tomorrow night

On point #2 - we have heard from Cadsev on this board that these are/are going to be some very good players- his evaluation of players is usually on the money. I have heard from another basketball person, whose talent evaluation I respect greatly, who says if White does not develop anymore he will still be worthy of the commitment and may develop into a player the Big 10 and other large schools will be after. Why not get the commitment now? Class A has produced some excellent players in this state- Josh Mueller, Tom Rops, Zach Finley, etc. If you are trying to say there is not enough competition in Class A to evaluate- evaluation is done during the summer as well- when they are going up against some of the best players from the region/country. Talent is talent whether it be class B, class A or class AA. (Mark Tetzlaff- class B, Jared Reiner- class B) What does it say for the only state university in SD playing at the DI level if these kids were to go to some other DI school and do well? Would you be saying- "Why didn't the rabbits get these kids?"
On point #1 I think other posters have said it well enough- freak injuries/illness. As a coach if your practices are not competitive and have some hard parts to them how can you expect kids to respond in games and environments like Rupp and Williams Arenas?

                      Re: SWMS tomorrow night

Nagy was on the SportsTalk program this afternoon. I was in my car so its hard to remember everything he said but the gist was:

                      1. Callahan will be missed. Nagy said he hasn't had a guard with Garrett's court awareness and basketball ability since Sempsrott

                      2. Callahan, Yackley and Loney will not play tonight due to injury

                      3. Focus tonight is not on winning just on getting the freshman used to the system and learn about what they have/ don't have.

                      4. Expecting to start 4 Freshman tonight against a Junior/Senior heavy team in SWMSU.

Hopefully Coach was pulling a little Lou Holtz today or we may have a second GTSNBTA (or whatever the heck those initials are?

No scholarships have been used, these are verbal commitments.  Some are critical when we recruit talent outside the state and yet when we lose a guy to a regional school people are quick to point that out.  Now, when we get verbals from 2 of the best prospects in any of the next 3 in-state classes someone jumps on here and is critical.

                        [/quote]

You are right on with this comment jackmd. If State gets heat for getting too much out of state talent, then you have to give them credit when they do get the in state talent. I think it's great for State that they got the two boys from Madison. Obviously the State fans are going to be coming to the games no matter what. But as a non State fan I will tell you that I'm much more likely to come watch (and cheer) for State the more SD kids they have on the team. Being from the Madison area I will probably go watch quite a few games once these kids start playing. I hate to see any DI players leave SD.

As far as the injuries, it's just ridiculous to ensue that Nagy's practices could have something to do with it.

I notice that it says statebasketballfan is an ex member. Was he kicked off the site or did he voluntarily leave, or is that stuff confidential?

I too was very impressed with the play of the freshman Kai Williams and Thomas Bassett. I thought Bassett would be a work in progress and he may still be, but he plays and looks confident and mature. I think while he may not be quite as gifted athletically as Andre Gilbert , he is a much better pure basketball player. Williams might be one of the most gifted players we have at SDSU for a long time. With the right supporting cast he is going to be a great player. Cadwell is simply a take charge player who just keeps getting better. He was being guarded by former Mitchell player Ryan Krome who is a very good defender and he just seems to get where he want's to go on the floor. It's just too bad that the circumstances of the last 2 years has put so much pressure on his shoulders. The Jacks are going to be undersized almost ever night. They need to scrap and hustle to every lose ball for us to compete on a nightly basis. We need Mario Brandon's experience. I'm anxious to see what Yackley is able to contribute. I thought Frias had some good moves to the hoop and rebounds well for a guard. Hornby seemed to be trying to find his place out there, but looks like he has added weight and muscle. It will be great to get Loney back as we are really thin in the big guy rotation.

Lots of talent with lots of variables. Hard to say what Nagy will do with Callahan. I think he was really banking of 2 solid guards with talent at the 3 and 4 spots and just enough to get by at the 5. Now, does he wait for Callahan or scrap that plan? He can't replace him as no one else on the bench has Garrett's talent.

I knew Bassett was for real and he will be that much better if Engen can take some of the rebounding pressure off of him. Loney will always be solid and needs to start. I think its way easier for the young guys to come off the bench unless they are super-talented like Kai, then get them in the game from the tip.

Kai can and should be the scorer. It won't happen every night (freshman) but he should know that its his perogative to get the ball to the hoop or to get himself to the FT line. I don't care if he shoots 35%, he has to shoot the ball. Early in last nights game too many possesions ended for the Jacks without a shot.

Lots of variables, I don't see this team blowing out may opponents and I see some possible blowouts for this team. That said, patience, learning, and understanding can go a long ways. Looking forward to Sunday.

This team will continue to evolve and be a work in progress. We have some of the right pieces and need to add a few more. We just don't have that big 6'8 power forward to bang with some of our opponents. Many of our players are a couple of inches undersized and will have to make up for that by playing smart on the offensive and defensive end. We were outrebounded by Southwest State which is rare for a Nagy team. They got numerous second and third chances. REBOUNDING is my biggest fear for this team.

Rebounding has to be a big concern and Nagy addressed this after the game. The good thing is rebounding is as much about hard work as it is about heighth. Nagy's teams have always rebounded well because he demands it. He'll get this team to get after it on the boards. They're young. The addition of Loney will only help. I can only imagine it would be hard as a teamate to see Loney work his tail off for a rebound and not feel like you were letting the team down if you didn't work that hard yourself. I'm hoping his determination and Nagy's butt chewings will rub off and the rebounding will come.
